Feather & Oar: Menswear mercantile in Tacoma

SPACEWORKS MAGIC >>>

Spaceworks hatched a new business in Tacoma's Triangle District. Feather & Oar, at least for now, offers trendy and vintage menswear ... with plans to move into women's clothing.

"Our focus is to offer quality, gentle used and vintage goods with a sense of timelessness. We subscribe to helping our customers find their individual style versus trying to keep up with the trends of fashion," says Feather & Oar co-owner JD Elquist.

Why Feather & Oar? It's a tribute to the area's history, claims its blossoming Facebook page. "Feather" is in tribute to local Native American history, while the "Oar" is symbolic of Tacoma's European settlers. Beyond just its name, Elquist and the other Feather & Oar owners - Travis Pranger and Drew Collier - aim to make this store all about community.

"We want our store to be a place our city can come and relax, hang out and relate," says Elquist. "We will be doing a few community focused events in the months to come."

The trio originally came to Spaceworks as part of Camp 6 - a group dedicated to bolstering local merchants. They saw a need for a men's clothing business downtown.

"Spaceworks is an incredible program," he says. "They offer the chance for artists to have a dream. Having a physical location made Feather & Oar possible and without Spaceworks it would have been impossible."

The store is open Monday through Saturday.
