1. A brooding, mysterious godfather, a broken-jawed wooden soldier that comes to life and a murderous Mouse King all converge once again to remind us The Nutcracker story may be the most hair-raising Christmas favorite for the whole family the world has ever known. The Tacoma City Ballet is set apart as the sole production in the area to follow the story, scenic design, costuming and choreography as it was originally created by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov accompanied by Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky's captivating score, thanks to the Northwest Sinfonietta. Whether the Mouse King has seven heads (like the beast of Revelation), three heads (like Cerberus, dog-guardian of Hades) or only one (like a normal mouse king), this dark-edged dream promises to leave kids and sensitive adults as speechless as the bounding, pirouetting athletes on stage. It hits the Pantages Theater's stage at 3 p.m.

2. Conversation Tacoma hosts another, er, conversation today. The Conversation agenda will feature a viewing of the movie Unnatural Causes, followed by a conversation about how one's position in society affects health at noon inside the Urban League of Tacoma.

3. A few days before Halloween Tacoma artist Euphoria Marie Sorensen was struck by a truck while walking on the 200 block of North G Street. She's still in the hospital with severe injuries, with recovery updates posted at gofundme.com. Thousands of you pass through Tacoma and have never had the pleasure of meeting Sorensen, but there's a select several hundred who know this mother well. Many of those folks have put together a benefit concert to help pay for her medical costs. From 4-11 p.m., an benefit auction will be held at The New Frontier Lounge, while A Leaf, Death By Stars, Looking For Lizards, Deborah Page and DJ Melodica entertain.

4. The moths are on to something. Lights are awesome. Especially holiday lights. Make today the day you check out Zoolights and Fantasy Lights - both South Sound institutions.

5. The Tacoma Cult Movie Club will host a Quentin Tarantino nightvisiting some of his more obviously "inspiring works" at 7 p.m. inside The Acme Grub Cage. The night of free movies, shorts, trailers and wackiness includes a raffle. Just in case there's trivia, the F-bomb gets uttered 252 times in Reservoir Dogs.

Bandito Betty Lou Who continues to tour new businesses and projects that opened in the last year. We spotted her in the middle of Pacific Avenue checking out the rail bridge that opened in March. The Tacoma Link eventually scared her away. Don't fret. The Weekly Volcano is hot on her trail. Expect more Lou Who action tomorrow.

MONDAY, DEC. 10 2012 >>>

1. Indie folk rockers Farewell to the Woods started out as four people singing a song written the night before in a cold garage. After nearly two years of practicing, writing and scrapping new tunes, and adding/losing members the band has expanded to an eight piece and will perform at 9 p.m. with Punch Drunk Heart at The Eastside Club Tavern in Olympia.

2. Conductor Dr. Paul Schultz presents a preview of the Northwest Repertory Singers Dec. 15 and 16 concerts today at 3 p.m. inside the Frank Tobey Jones Retirement Community.  The repertoire of traditional carols and favorite songs of the season includes music by Stephen Paulus, John Rutter and Donna Gartman Schultz.

5. Blenis Ely will fill The Swiss with blues beginning at 8 p.m.

The Weekly Volcano fired up its Electric Salchow Stage Saturday night, hosting Kim Archer for a night of soul, R&B, funk and ice skating. The temperature was signficantly cooler than last Saturday's show featuring Igenous Rocks. However, the crowd was larger. In fact, this week people dropped by just to listen to the music.

Archer's performance was top-notch, even though she was freakin' freezing.

Bandito Betty Lou Who continues her tour of new businesses in Tacoma. We spotted her at Proctor Frozen Yogurt, which opened this spring in the spot formerly occupied by Jubilee Cupcakes in Tacoma's Proctor Business District. Proctor Frozen Yogurt also serves Alina Mikolajczyk's awesome soups, which includes fresh organic produce from local farms: 8-ounces for $4, 12 ounces for $5 and 16 ounces for $6. Be sure to add a bread roll and Europa Bistro's delicious olive oil to your order.

We snapped a photo of Bandito before she got in the soup line. Clearly agitated, she sprinted off. Don't fret. The Weekly Volcano is hot on her trail. Expect more Lou Who action tomorrow.

THE CHRISTMAS REVELS IN THE HOUSE >>>

The Christmas Revels is a show, a Puget Sound tradition, a high-spirited, silly and serious, variety show that takes on Christmas in a way unique to other holiday performances.  The Revels combine folk traditions and a bit of historical appeal with choirs and community performances, dance and drama. This year, it's back at the Rialto Theater in Tacoma.

"The Christmas Revels is a seasonal gift to the community of song, dance, beauty, foolery and a dose of audience participation," says the event press release. "It's a joyous, timeless celebration for all ages; it's a great concoction of folk tradition and high art."

This year's Revels are set in a 12th-century English manor called Haddon Hall, which is about to be demolished. As a duke returns to the hall for a last visit to their ancestral manse, they find that it is not so abandoned. Instead, it's filled with ancestors partying it up, thereby proving that even in merry olde England in-laws and distant relatives could still monkey up your holiday plans.

The cast has some return favorites, including Tony Curry as a mischievous jester, B.J. Douglas as director and Megan Oberfield as music director.

The warm and fuzzy feeling you get when in good company, complimented by a delicious and unique local beer, is what makes the Harmon Tap Room's 12 Beers of Christmas a worthy holiday merriment.

Dec 13-24, The Harmon Taproom is hosting 12 days of 12 different beers for customers to imbibe. If beer-lovers enjoy a brew for each of the 12 days, they will receive a complimentary engraved mug.

"I was just looking for something fun to do," says brewer Jeff Carlson. "Throughout the year people get excited about certain beers, and instead of making more, I hid them away. Now I can bring them out and let everyone relive their memories and drink the fancy stuff they've been dreaming about."

For some reason, the holiday lyrics "visions of sugar plums danced in their heads," just danced through my head. See, the thoughts of extra special beers are already invoking the spirit of the season.

While sugar plum beer is not on the menu, Sour Cherry ESB/Amber and Raspberry Blonde are. Oak aged Vanilla Porter and Candy Cane will also be on tap. Expect to also taste St. Helen's Anniversary IPA, Striker Stout and an Imperial infused with coconut.

Expect to also bump into Carlson, who says part of the fun of the event is making new friends.

"I will be here and around," he says. "Come say hi and share a beer."

WE SCENE IT >>>

There are many upsetting things about the Christmas and New Year's season -increased credit card debt, unresolved decades-long family pain, the spiritual vacuum at the core of our culture, trying to get into the spirit of things and on and on.

Thankfully, the South Sound music scene is still raging during the holiday season to keep us sane.

The Weekly Volcano dropped in on a few shows this past weekend, including two benefits.

First, Tacomans Najamonique Todd and Del Brown hosted their second Sound Icons show, this time focusing on the music of Jeff Buckley. Friday night at The New Frontier Lounge, Alex Tapia, Kurt Lindsay, Todd and Brown's band Wait In The Fire and Not From Brooklyn did Buckley right. Check out more photos and video from the show here.

Early Saturday evening, Kim Archer took to the Weekly Volcano's Electric Salchow Stage, performing for the ice skaters at the Franciscan Polar Plaza. See the photos and watch the videos of her performance here.

Later Saturday night, the Weekly Volcano dropped in on the Casey Heath benefit at McCoy's Tavern in downtown Tacoma. Click here for a brief backstory on Heath's tragic death. We snapped a few photos at the benefit as you can see above.

Last, we dropped in on the Euphoria Marie Sorensen Sunday night at The New Frontier Lounge. Bands played, henna ink got squeezed, fortunes were told and swag was auctioned off to benefit Sorensen, who was struck by a truck while crossing the street in October.
