Sound Sandwiches: Peterson Bros. 1111's Reuben

By Dutch Randall on February 13, 2013

You can get a sandwich just about anywhere, but if you want to wrap your muzzle around a monument, then you need to go to the new masters of sandwich-making - Peterson Bros. 1111. Justin and Robbie Peterson opened the "Eleven Eleven" this summer in the Hilltop Tacoma neighborhood. From the moment the idea sparked, the brothers set out to make the best sandwiches in the South Sound. Man, I think they've done it.

The instant you walk in to the well-worn joint you are likely to be greeted by both Peterson brothers, as they've worked hard to create a neighborhood feel. If you ride the friendly vibe and ask their opinion on what sandwich to order - one gives nod to the Cuban and the other points toward the Reuben.

I chose the Reuben - one of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted.

The come-to-Jesus Reuben starts with a grilled marbled rye hoagie smeared with garlic butter, which makes this monster easy to handle. Thin sliced pastrami, sauerkraut warm off the grill, melted Swiss cheese make every bite a trumpet horns from heaven experience.  As if that isn't enough, the Peterson brothers add just a hint of horseradish to their housemade Thousand Island dressing.

The Reuben is wet and excellent, drooling Thousand Island dressing and kraut juice all over everything.

I didn't get more than two blocks down the road when I turned back and pondered ordering another. Seriously.
