5 Things To Do Today: Cosmonauts, "You Are Here," Black Panthers, Hot Club Sandwich and more ...

COSMONAUTS: Though they hail from California, they sound like they could have just as easily been born out in the fair, gritty city of Tacoma.

MONDAY, APRIL 8 2013 >>>

1. Cosmonauts share time equally in mind-melting squalls of Doors-esque acid rock and bursts of sweet, jumpy garage pop confection. It would be more than advisable to bring some earplugs for the band's show with The Garden Of Burgers at 9 p.m. inside Le Voyeur.

2. The fascinating thing about Michael Johnson's new sculptural installation at Kittredge Gallery is that you can see it from many perspectives, literally and metaphorically. The installation is in the smaller back gallery, and is opened from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Viewed through the double open doors from the larger front gallery it can be taken in in a single, all-encompassing glance, and from this initial glance a viewer can gain various impressions and interpretations. Then walk into the gallery and take a closer look and you will see it in one or more entirely different lights. Finally - and you should do this only after thoroughly looking - read the explanation on the wall label to understand what you're looking at. Read Alec Clayton's full review of "You Are Here" in the Weekly Volcano's Arts section.

3. George Katsiaficas - author or editor of eleven books, including ones on the global uprising of 1968 and European social movements - together with Kathleen Cleaver, co-edited Liberation, Imagination and the Black Panther Party. The longtime activist for peace and justice will discuss his new book at 7 p.m. inside Orca Books in downtown Olympia.

4. Hot Club Sandwich will offer a fresh approach to the Parisian Hot Club style of Django Reinhardt at 8 p.m. inside The Royal Lounge in Olympia.

5. Every Monday night guitarist Rafael Tranquilino hosts an experimental jam at 9 p.m. inside Stonegate Pizza. Tonight's jam has an extra twist in that Tranquilino will be filming the event, so for goodness sakes comb your hair.

New burger joint opens in Olympia

5TH ON 4TH SANDWICH SHOP: Rick and Melody Morgan are serving burgers, fried foods and shakes. Photo credit: Nikki McCoy

SPEAKING OF SANDWICHES ... >>>

5th on 4th is the name of the new drive-thru(!) and sit-down restaurant in Olympia. And true to its cute name - the joint is the new venture of 5th Ave Sandwich Shop.

Located at the old Subway building on Fourth Avenue, just before you hit Olympia's Eastside neighborhood, the sandwich shop is exploring a new avenue - burgers, fried foods and shakes. Opening day was Tuesday, April 2.

"It's something that customers have always wanted," explains owner Melody Morgan. "They say we make awesome sandwiches and that we'd make awesome burgers."

A bleu cheese burger, BBQ bacon, salmon burger, garden burger and even a farmer burger - with fried ham and egg - grace the menu. Chicken strips are also featured.

Morgan and her husband, Rick, have branched off from their family business downtown, which opened seven years ago, to own and operate 5th on 4th.

"My mom started a restaurant in Longview and I grew up in the kitchen," says Melody. After moving to Olympia and having children of her own, Melody reflects on how important the business is to her family. "It's our kids future, too."

5th on 4th also serves staple menu items from its downtown location, such as cold and hot sandwiches made with homemade bread, salads, soups and cookies. The 5th Ave Sandwich Shop made it to the Sliced 16 in the Weekly Volcano's Tournament of Sandwiches.

Open Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the business is already experiencing a boom of happy customers. A recent visit revealed booths of smiling people, regulars from the downtown location, and a bustling, friendly vibe.

The titanic sandwich throwdown finale in on! Voting for the 2013 Weekly Volcano Tournament of Sandwiches Readers' Poll Championship game is live right now.

After three weeks of voting, you have picked the two most popular sandwiches in the South Sound area. What began as 64 sandwiches has been narrowed down to two: Oliver's Sandwiches' Lobster Sandwich and STINK's Stinker.

>>> The daily sandwich battles here on Spew are sponsored by SUBWAY in Orting, Puyallup, Tacoma, Spanaway and Lakewood.

Today's Championship Competition

Welcome to the big dance. Online voting will end at 5 p.m. Voting will resume at 6 p.m. live at the Tournament of Sandwiches Party at Masa on Tacoma's Sixth Avenue.

At 6 p.m. we'll hand out sandwich voting ballots at our Tournament of Sandwiches Party at Masa, 2811 Sixth Ave. Masa will be broadcasting the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship game upstairs in its party room. Throughout the first half of the game we'll be handing out sandwich voting ballots for a final push of voting, as we toss back happy hour specials. 5 Things To Do Today: "Tattoo Nation," British Export, IDefy, Cosmonauts and more ...

"TATTOO NATION": The film explores the evolution of ink, from brands to art, and looks into the lives of people who quite literally wear their hearts on their sleeves.

TUESDAY, APRIL 9 2013 >>>

1. When fine-art photographer Eric Schwartz set out to photograph people with tattoos, he didn't expect to find a detailed history underneath the artwork. After a chance meeting with California tattoo legend Edward "Chuco" Caballero at a national tattoo show, the story for Schwartz's first film, Tattoo Nation, began to reveal itself - the documentary profiles some of the biggest artists and tattoo recipients to come out of the early Los Angeles-based, Chicano black-and-grey tattoo scene. The film screens at 1:45, 7 and 9 p.m. at The Grand Cinema.

2. Twenty five percent of Washington state children live in food insecure households. At 6:30 p.m. inside the Wheelock Student Center Rotunda, executive director and founder of Hilltop Urban Gardens Dean Jackson, executive director of FISH Food Banks Beth Elliot, folks from Canyon Little Mother Earth Farm and the Emergency Food Networks and sustainability manager of city of Tacoma Kristi Lynett will discuss this problem and other hunger issues.

3. This might be hard to believe, but you can't go see The Beatles live anymore, unless you have some sort of resurrection or time traveling technology. If you do have said technology and are using to see The Beatles, you've got some problems, so let Red Wind Casino help you out. It hosts Beatles tribute band British Export at 8 p.m. Go scream your head off.

4. GOAT, Overboard and IDefy will rock Malarkey's Pool & Brew at 8 p.m. as a benefit for Puget Sound Pizza bartender Theresa Pino who has been out of work due to health issues.

5. Cosmonauts share time equally in mind-melting squalls of Doors-esque acid rock and bursts of sweet, jumpy garage pop confection. It would be more than advisable to bring some earplugs for the band's show with The Garden Of Burgers at 9 p.m. inside The New Frontier Lounge.

Tournament of Sandwiches: A champion crowned

WINNER: Oliver, 5, and his Oliver's Sandwiches' Lobster Sandwich captured the Tournament of Sandwiches crown.

TUESDAY, APRIL 9: WE HAVE A WINNER >>>

After three weeks of voting the Weekly Volcano readers have picked the most popular sandwich in the South Sound.

The Tournament of Sandwiches Championship match pitted Milton's darling Oliver's Sandwiches against Tacoma's über deli STINK — more specifically, the Lobster Sandwich vs. the Stinker, respectively.

Yesterday's championship battle saw the most online voting before dinnertime (5 p.m.) of the tournament. The Lobster Sandwich had a commanding lead by time the voting switched to the live ballot voting at 6 p.m. during the Tournament of Sandwiches Party in Masa's upstairs party room.

At the party, folks filled out pizza voting/raffle ballots when they weren't pounding margaritas and screaming at the television. The sandwich voting was often lost during the close NCAA Men's Championship hoop game in which Louisville beat Michigan 82-76 to win the title.

But, as promised, we tallied the on-location votes during halftime of the hoop game, which ended in STINK's favor.

Representation from Oliver's Sandwiches and STINK - Cheese & Meat were in the house. The Oliver's crew arrived a half-hour early with 5-year-old Oliver in tow - the darling boy the Milton sandwich shop was named after. STINK owner Kris Blondin and her entire staff arrived, consuming an entire table and many drinks.

At halftime of the basketball game, Pappi Swarner gave a few remarks, thanked sponsor Subway and party host Masa and gave away 10 or so South Sound restaurant gift cards as raffle prizes.

The Weekly Volcano staff quickly downed their drinks and tallied the ballots. After combining the ballots with its 76 percent vote lead accumulated online, the winner of the 2013 Tournament of Sandwiches was announced:

Oliver's Sandwiches' Lobster Sandwich.

Both South Sound restaurants will be receiving Tournament of Sandwiches trophies after completion of the engraving. Also, look for an upcoming feature on Oliver's Sandwiches in the Weekly Volcano.

So it's official: the Lobster Sandwich is the winner of Weekly Volcano's 2013 Tournament of Sandwiches. Eat it up, South Sound.

Thank you!

We would like to extend special THANKS! to SUBWAY in Orting, Puyallup, Tacoma, Spanaway and Lakewood for sponsoring the Tournament of Sandwiches. When you are in those areas, stop by for a foot-long.

Also a big thanks to Masa on Tacoma's Sixth Avenue for hosting our Tournament of Sandwiches Finals party last night. Good times.

But most of all, thanks to all the awesome folks who voted. You rock.

See you next year for the Tournament of Burgers!

Art House Café now open in Tacoma's Stadium District

ART HOUSE CAFE: Chef Dustin Joseph and kitchen staff make English muffins in-house for their Eggs Benedict. Photo credit: Pappi Swarner

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH >>>

There's a new dining option in the Stadium District. Art House Café opened April 6, with an in-house bakery, coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner menus all from scratch and made with local ingredients, as well as cooking classes.

Co-owners Lucia and John Armstrong, who also own neighboring Open Arts Studio, and chef/co-owner Dustin Joseph envisioned a cool place to hang out, with a fun environment and a focus on local and sustainable ingredients.

"The cafe has a family atmosphere with clean, fresh food," says Joseph, former chef of Chamber's Bay Grill.

It sounds very promising. He described house-pickled vegetables and a bloody Mary with tomato water ice cubes so it does not get watered down. The menus are filled with epicurean delights. For breakfast and bakery items, menu highlights include to-go breakfast sandwiches and burritos and eggs Benedict with house-made English muffins. For lunch, look for an ample selection of pizzas and gourmet grilled sandwiches. The "late crafts" menu features small plates with house-made charcuterie and specialty salads and pizzas.

Pastries, baked goods and coffee are available all day, with breakfast from 7-11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and dinner items 4-10 or 11 p.m.

According to Joseph, cooking classes have already begun for kids, and will start in a couple of weeks for adults.

ART HOUSE CAFÉ, 6 A.M. TO 10 P.M. MONDAY-THURSDAY, 6 A.M. TO 11 P.M. FRIDAY, 7 A.M. TO 11 P.M. SATURDAY, 7 A.M. TO 9 P.M. SUNDAY, 111 N. TACOMA AVE., TACOMA, 253.212.2011

Tacoma Craft Beer Festival moves to Cheney Stadium

BENNETT THURMON: He was happy at his inaugural, sold out Big Beer Festival this past February. Imagine how happy he'll be at Cheney Stadium this September.

FUTURE THINGS ARE COMING >>>

In 2009 the Tacoma Craft Beer Festival organizers were overwhelmed. The inaugural event ultimately sold out, and repeatedly hit maximum allowed capacity of the Foss Waterway Seaport, leaving the line of people waiting for entry wrapped around the building. The following year, the exact same scenario happened. In 2011 and 2012, organizers went bigger, moving the festival outdoors to the 21st Street Park along Dock Street. People were turned away at the gate due to capacity issues and the fact that all the beer was drank.

So what will Tacoma Craft Beer Festival organizers do this year?

Go bigger.

In September, the largest single day beer festival in Washington state will be held at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma. The fifth annual Tacoma Craft Beer Festival will tap the kegs at Cheney, host 20 more breweries - bringing the total to 70 craft breweries - and welcome 6,000 to 7,000 beer drinkers. Gone will be the parking issues. Gone will be the lines at Honey Buckets. Enter more food options.

"This event is being held to bring together those that are passionate about craft beer, and to further build community while promoting this amazing beverage in the South Sound," states co-organizer Bennett Thurmon.

Mark a big "X" over noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 on your calendar. You and a bunch of people will be drinking a bunch of craft beer.

Clayton On Art: Stephanie Stebich's lecture on Eric Carle's "ArtArt"

THE INSIDE SCOOP >>>

Tacoma Art Museum Director Stephanie Stebich will lecture on the personal and private art of children's book artist Eric Carle Wednesday, April 10 at 10:30 a.m. The lecture is free with museum admission, and it should be as special as is the exhibition because she is a personal friend of the artist and knows him well.

I was fortunate enough to attend a press preview of the exhibition at which Stebich toured the show with us and talked about Carle's art. My review will appear in this week's Volcano. But there's much more to the show than I can say in one review, so I'll try to cover a little more here.

5 Things To Do Today: City Chickens 101, Eric Carle lecture, jacked-up beers, "SURFACE Tile Show" and more ...

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10 2013 >>>

1. While traditionally urban farming has conjured images of a wee patch of vegetables and a compost bucket, now it may include farm animals as well. With the rising influence of foodie culture and back-to-the-land enthusiasm, urban agriculture has a growing contingent of supporters not only in the more spacious 'burbs of the South Sound but in the cities proper. Organizations like Gallucci Learning Garden promote South Sound city farmers, offering workshops in urban chicken farming, such as its City Chickens 101 at 5 p.m.

2. Read Weekly Volcano art critic Alec Clayton preview of her lecture here.

3. Pint Defiance hosts Firestone Walker Brewing for "Jacked-Up" beers from 5-7 p.m. The University Place specialty beer store and taproom will pour Union Jack IPA and Double Jack IPA as well as the extremely limited Sucaba Barrel Aged Barley Wine and Double DBA.

4. They buy tile trivets, ceramic figurines and odd pieces of old china at thrift stores, smashing the objects into pieces with a hammer, and reassembling the shards into two-dimensional images that are then mortared or glued onto surfaces. Shop. Smash. Adhere resulting shards to any surface on which you can put grout and thinset mortar. Making mosaics can be a sort of ritual, a purification by arts and crafts. The sweat, the dirt, the dangerously sharp pieces of tile scattered about. Oh, the payoff. The pride. The beautiful surfaces. Discover the passion and the beauty from 5:30-8 p.m. when SURFACE, a Tile Show opens at Gallery 301 in Tacoma. The tile show - in conjunction with the big International Mosaic Summit Tacoma - will feature small works byBarbara Clark, Beth Anderson, Chris Seminara, Clare Dohna, Claudia Riedener, Dan Earle (special guest), Gina Holt, Jaki Reed, Janet Gadallah, Janice Deckmann, Karen Morrice, Kimmi Kerns, Laura Brodax, Maria Root, Olga Slutkovskaya, Paul Lewing, Terri Goodwin and Tracy Gosser. Check it out, but don't break anything!

5. Father Alejandro Solalinde, who received the 2012 National Human Rights Award for his work in defense of Central and South American migrants transiting through Mexico, will speak on the current crisis these migrants face in Mexico at 7 p.m. inside the University of Puget Sound's Kilworth Memorial Chapel

When class meets glass ... and vodka!

HOTEL MURANO: It has created a cocktail package in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Tacoma's Museum of Glass.

THE GLASS LADY COCKTAIL PACKAGE >>>

The Hotel Murano is toasting the Museum of Glass' 10th anniversary with a fancy cocktail package. Actually, others have been invited to the party. Behind the driving of Keri Porritt, the Murano's restaurant operations manager, Carolyn Osborne - artist and owner of Murano's in-house gift shop Creative Forces Gifts and Sundries and Seattle's Glass Distillery - are also involved in the cocktail package to be offered exclusively in the hotel's Lobby Bar.

Here's the deal: Every other week a classic vodka cocktail recipe will highlight the flavor of Glass Vodka and come presented in a lovely hand painted souvenir glass - thanks to Osborne - for $29, with $2 of the proceeds benefitting the Museum of Glass.

"Glass distillery is working with the Museum of Glass as well having them create hand blown glass bottles each month for display at the museum, so we took all of the ideas and combined them to help the museum celebrate their 10 year anniversary," says Porritt.

Porritt says the Glass Lady Cocktail Package will run through spring. Although she says if it continues to be as popular as it is now, the hotel will come knocking on Osborne's door for more beautiful glassware.

"I am so thrilled that they are having me do the painted glasses," says Osborne.

This week's featured cocktail is a Glass Lady Cosmo. Just by its looks, the package whispers sweet nothings in your ear. Even the vodka bottle is pure class ... in celebration of the glass.
