1. More weed has been smoked, more babies have been conceived, and more fun has been had in the Volkswagen Bus than perhaps any vehicle ever made. When people see the Bus, it's almost impossible not to smile. It brings them back to a simpler time of no-worries partying. Lemay - America's Car Museum's cool and groovy "Vee Dub: Bohemian Beauties" exhibit opens today. Beginning at 10 a.m., you may gawk at classic bohemian beauties and, no doubt, hear an endless stream of VW stories from fellow museumgoers.
2. Harbor History Museum opens its new exhibit Going to the Chapel: Faith, Fellowship, and Friction on the Gig Harbor Peninsula showcasing the history of the early peninsula churches from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
3. Tacoma's Alea Publishing & Recording has release the CD Made in Tacoma: New Chamber Music for Saxophone featuring local saxophonist Erik Steighner. In celebration of the CD release, a free concert open to the public will take place at the Museum of Glass at 1 p.m. The program will feature Steighner along with fellow saxophonists Evan Smith and Fred Winkler, and will include both works from the CD (by Greg Youtz, Jeff Tecca, and Erik Steighner) as well as other pieces from the saxophone repertoire (by Paul Hindemith, Barry Cockcroft, and Allan Blank).
4. Clickity click click click click clickety click click ding zzzshuh clickety click click clickety click zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzip! That, kids, is the sound of a typewriter. What's a typewriter? Head to the Timberland Regional Library in Olympia for Hunt and Peck: A Celebration of the Mighty Typewriter from 6-8 p.m. Jim Hair, a machine fixer, will talk about the "wild and woolly" world of typewriter repair. The documentary The Typewriter in the 21st Century follows.
5. The South Sound music scene knows how to take care of its own. Our woodsy, water hugging corner of the state has nurtured some remarkably supportive and artsy communities - a minor empire of wide-eyed, openhearted creatives. Tonight's Mitch Reems fundraiser - featuring Rich Wetzel's Groovin Higher Orchestra and Champagne Sunday - is bookended by an auction and hugs for Reems, who was recently diagnosed with and is undergoing treatment for stage four non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The benefit begins at 7 p.m. in Stonegate Pizza.
