1. It's been 50 years since the Civil Rights Act and the country is witnessing a renewed attack on voting rights, the re-segregation of public schools, gentrification, mass incarceration and entrenched job discrimination. Have something to say? University of Puget Sound organizations Black Student Union, African American Studies, Resident Student Association, and Spoken Word and Poetry Club host a "Civil Rights and Peace" poetry reading in celebration of Black History Month from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Tahoma Room at the Commencement Hall on the campus the University of Puget Sound.
2. University of Puget Sound is hosting the national traveling exhibition Horizon, a selection of book arts, organized and juried by the New York-based Guild of Book Workers, at Collins Memorial Library through March 30. The 52 works of contemporary book arts and fine binding feature some of the finest book artists and binders in the country, including three Northwest artists - Susan Collard, Suzanne Moore and Monica Holtclaw.
3. Paul Wood, licensed financial advisor, shares what you need to consider when planning for retirement, based on such factors as your current age and lifestyle goals, from 7-8 p.m. at the Lakewood Library.
4. The Hambone Blues Band performs at 8 p.m. in The Swiss.
5. Tacoma Comedy Club celebrates its 1000th show with 10 of its favorite comedians performing 10 minutes each beginning at 8 p.m.: Brad Upton, Kermet Apio, Rodney Sherwood, Duane Goad, Andrew Rivers, Jubal Flagg, Drew Barth, Jonas Barnes, Mike Coletta and hosted by Adam Norwest.
