Check This Out: "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (2005)

Not too old for this: Kilmer and Downey

Writer's note: This will be my last installment of recommmended films you can find at local libraries. Enjoy.

If you still wonder why Iron Man 3 felt like a movie straight out of the '90s (this film opened with Eiffel 65's "Blue" and dressed a character as Vincent Vega from Pulp Fiction, for starters), I'd ask writer-director Shane Black. The author behind the Lethal Weapon franchise and (at least to me) the ultimate Schwarzenegger vehicle, Last Action Hero, brought to IM3 his trademark witty dialogue and penchant for setting Christmastime crimes in warm climes. And he must also like Robert Downey, Jr. (who doesn't, right?), since both appeared in an earlier Black film, 2005's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

I Corps change of command in one nifty Storify package

I Corps commander Lt. Gen. Robert Brown relinquished command to Lt. Gen. Stephen Lanza Thursday, Feb. 6 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Photo credit: Gail Woods

It was announced Tuesday, Nov. 6 that Lt. Gen. Robert Brown, who assumed command of I Corps in July 2012, would be moving on. Brown has spent the last 18 months redirecting I Corps' focus to the Pacific Rim. He also used his position on the base to work on suicide prevention, sexual assault prevention and to help transitioning soldiers acclimate to the civilian workforce. He's awesome.

Stepping into the role is Lt. Gen. Stephen Lanza, who took command of I Corps Tuesday. Lanza, a 33-year Army veteran, was commander of 7th Infantry Division since October 2012, when he worked with the Army to stand up the 7th ID.

Below is our Storify on how the whole I Corps change of command ceremony went down. ...

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III visits Joint Base Lewis-McChord

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III addresses members of Team McChord, Feb. 3, 2014, during an all-call at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Photo credit: Tech. Sgt. Sean Tobin

Gen. Mark Welsh III became the Air Force's 20th Chief of Staff in August 2012. Then, like his fellow Chiefs, he had to deal with Congress and budgets. About 150,000 of his civilians were furloughed. Sequestration forced him to pencil out modernization against readiness. Next, he had to deal with a nuclear force knee deep in drugs, cheating, gambling, drunkenness and incompetence. When all said in done, the Air Force plans to cut about 22,500 airmen, or 7 percent of its active-duty force, this year.

It's no wonder Welsh III hit the road.

5 Things To Do Today: La Luz, Wood Aged Beer Fest, Mardi gras, Dead Winter Carpenters and more ...

La Luz / Photo credit: Angel Ceballos

SATURDAY, FEB. 8 2014 >>>

1. Last November, La Luz were driving along in their tour van when they hit a patch of black ice that sent them skidding into a concrete block. While waiting for AAA to come, a semi-truck came barreling into their van. It was a terrifying and destructive blip in the middle of their continued rise in prominence. Though they're still a relatively young band, 2013 found them blowing up, their ultra-cool brand of woozy surf-rock landing them a gig opening for Of Montreal on a nation-wide tour - In fact, they were heading home for an Of Montreal show at Neumo's when the accident happened. Luckily, none of the band were seriously injured, and La Luz have resumed performing and solidifying their stature as not only one of Seattle's most exciting up-and-coming bands, but an indestructible one at that. Catch the band with Pony Time, the Fucking Eagles and the Tom Price Desert Club at 8 p.m. in Bob's Java Jive.

5 Things To Do Today: Long Beach Rehab, "Barber of Seville," Pearl Django, "Joe Turner" and more ...

Welcome to the snowy Tacoma Qball / photo courtesy of Facebook

SUNDAY, FEB. 9 2014 >>>

1. Honestly, we don't know who the hell is in the Long Beach Rehab band. Lyon Pride Music has booked the band in several Northwest venues, including the new Rock N Roll Lodge at 8 p.m. Pre-show hype still has Qball fronting the band, which will probably perform the songs of Bad Brains, Sublime and other punk, surf and funky reggae tunes.

2. Yoga Open Heart - two hours of heart openings, yoga and belly dance - will spread love from 1-3 p.m. at the Good Karma Center for Joy in downtown Tacoma. Pairs of friends and lovers are $35, solo $20 and walk-ins $25. Proceeds benefit HopeSparks!

3. Barney Rubble belted it in the bath. Spongebob stole Squidward's thunder by singing it underwater. And most famously, Bugs gnawed his way through several rounds of "Figaro! Figaro! Figaro!" in the toon classic, "Rabbit of Seville." Between its easily followed romcom plot and a score made universally familiar by the aforementioned pop culture references, Rossini's The Barber of Seville is an ideal introduction to opera. Tacoma Opera's presentation will follow the exploits of Seville's self-celebrating barber, Figaro - a character who literally sings his own praises - at 2 p.m. in the Rialto Theater. Everybody shares secrets with their barbers, and this barber is only too happy put what he learns to work.

4. Playwright August Wilson's "Pittsburgh Cycle" comprises ten plays about the African-American experience, each set in its own decade of the 20th century. It's a massive, multifaceted saga worthy of the best work from actors, designers, and directors. C. Rosalind Bell, a playwright herself, knew and worked with Wilson and Claude Purdy, their frequent collaborator. She was born in Lake Charles, La., worked as a writer in San Francisco and civil rights investigator for the Treasury Department in D.C., then landed here in 1995. Now she's directing Wilson's play Joe Turner's Come and Gone, the second in Wilson's epic cycle, for the Broadway Center at 3 p.m. in the Theatre on the Square. Read Christian Carvajal's preview of the show here.

5. Gypsy jazz geniuses Pearl Django will make a blessed appearance at 5 p.m. in the Marine View Presbyterian Church as part of the Jazz Live @ Marine View concert series. Tacoma-born jazz nomads Pearl Django present an unique musical space with undeniable grooves, fresh rhythms and evolving line ups.
