MORNING SPEW: Old hot sauce, Peepoo, RIP "The Tonight Show" ...

WHAT WE FOUND TODAY >>>

The best-selling hot sauce in the nation turns 142 years old. Happy birthday, Tabasco.

Tacomic: Plight of Megan Elizabeth Lenn and the Pierce County Bikini Baristas

RIP: The Tonight Show

Can't find that Porta Potty when you just have to go? A Swedish entrepreneur has created a biodegradable one-time-use toilet bag, the Peepoo, in hopes to help urban slums and developing countries dispose of their waste properly.

The nation's grief, shown through 1.5 million letters to widow Jackie Kennedy, are compiled together for the first time in Ellen Fitzpatrick's new book, Letters to Jackie: Condolences from a Grieving Nation.

5 Things To Do: Western Ghost House, Sok and the Faggots, shamrocks ...

Western Ghost House

4. The Camas Wind Quintet will perform pieces by Gustav Mahler, Paul Taffanel, Amy Beach and Andre Jolivet from 8-10 p.m. in Lagerquist Concert Hall.

NIGHT MOVES: Song Sparrow Research, C Average, "All Known Metal Bands"

MUSIC IN THE SOUTH SOUND TONIGHT >>>

ROCK: Created in 2006 as a three-piece, Song Sparrow Research originally cut its teeth as just that - a band exploring the rock based possibilities of a three person, drum, bass, guitar trio. Over time, however, and as is usually the case - interests fluctuated, and new sounds emerged. These days - including Saturday's show at The New Frontier - listeners are likely to hear and see a standup bass, glockenspiel, cello, keyboard and more when the band takes the stage or ventures onto your stereo. Read the full story here. With Santee, Xylophones, $2000 Puma, 9 p.m., The New Frontier Lounge, 301 E. 25th St., Tacoma - Matt Driscoll

HEADY ROCK: The vibe in the room becomes saturated with mountain mist and dragon breath and brilliant chord progressions and sweetly timed tom drums and cymbal crashes. My note taking ceases as I zone out on their heady rock. C Average takes me to space and back, just like a good rock band should. They follow through with a couple more jams, breaking periodically to realign their chemistry. Read my full story here. With the Tide, 9 p.m., $5, Eastside Club Tavern, 410 Fourth Ave., Olympia - Nikki Talotta

BOOK: Dan Nelson, the artist responsible for the book All Known Metal Bands - 300 something pages filled with an alphabetical list of every single metal band of all time (up until the book's 2007 publication) - is genius. Seriously. We don't use the word anywhere near as loosely as the Volcano's Paul Schrag. Tonight, Nelson will be at Northern in Olympia, reading from All Known Metal Bands along with Calving Johnson. It seems destine to be awesome. And genius. Seriously. 7 p.m., free, Northern, 321 Fourth Ave., Olympia - Michael Swan

BLUES AND THEN SOME: Taj Mahal is a true master of music. Period. From blues to funk to gospel to jazz to the Caribbean and back to American roots - Taj bathes in all of it masterfully. He's also the master of selling out the Capitol Theater tonight. 9 p.m., sold out, Capitol Theater, 206 E. Fifth Ave., Olympia - MD

Gaining understanding

Naseem Rakha

NASEEM RAKHA TALKS ABOUT THE CRYING TREE TOMORROW IN OLYMPIA >>>

Too often in America we fall victim to our inflated sense of self, the better self delayed by the hater self, the squeaky voiced youth of self doubt long ago formed, wringing your hair in a hand of doom, cursing the snickering moustache and its wheezy canine sidekick.  We like to think we know ourselves best, waiting to talk when we should be listening.

Sometimes, it takes something like a 10 minute phone call with someone you've never met to discuss their book - a book you haven't finished reading - to humbly remind you to shut your yapper and truly listen - because wisdom happened by on chance's wings and is trying to tell you something.

Naseem Rakha's debut novel, The Crying Tree, catapulted her into a category of new literary icons that very few writers achieve - even less on their first novel.

"The second agent that we shopped it to said 'This is an important book'," says Rakha. "They picked it up immediately."

That is something rarely heard of in the publishing industry. The Crying Tree launched a bidding war between several major publishers. Broadway, an imprint of Random House, eventually emerged victorious - but there's a great reason for it.

The story is very intense, and reading it can change a person's perception of emotional responsibility in life.

The Stanley family is from rural south Illinois and relocates to eastern Oregon, much to the chagrin of everyone but the father, who has taken a job as a deputy sheriff. He believes it will provide a fresh start and new life for all, despite the fact it means leaving the town the family grew up in, and everything they have known.

PLAN AHEAD: Recess time at King's Books

GO FOR THE PLAYGROUND BURN >>>

Like oil and water, Elizabeth Taylor and marriage, and Iggy Pop and body fat, some things just don't mix. You can add athletes and bookstores to that list - you rarely see people tossing a baseball in the Art/Architecture/Photography section of a bookstore.

Well, the resurgence of playground sports is putting that theory to the test, as the Intermittent Health And Fitness Club, or IHAF, combine their gym-class glory days with a night of exercise. Titled "Recess," IHAF offer a night of Double Dutch, four square and hopscotch - "our ridiculous way to get fit" - March 3 inside King's Books. These minimally challenging yet often acrobatic and exciting games don't require fancy equipment, refined skills, testosterone or a book club card. However, sometimes it just feels good to "double tap" someone's ass in four square followed by a quick 20 pages of Paul Madriani's legal thriller Double Tap.

Hear him speak at 6 p.m. inside the University of Washington Tacoma's Longshoremans Hall.

Pierce County READS today

IT'S PRESSURE, BUT NOT >>>

Television book clubs have their positive points. They get people reading and talking about literature. Sometimes they reward debut novelists whose work would otherwise founder in obscurity.

However, I generally don't look for recommendations when it comes to books. That's because a significant part of experiencing literature for me is the element of discovery. I would rather learn something on my own than have it taught to me because then it becomes a part of who I am. I like challenging books. I love to encounter foreign and new intellects.

That said, the Pierce County Library System recommmends a good one.

The Pierce County Library System selected the best-selling Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise by nationally known award-winning author Ruth Reichl as the Pierce County READS book for 2010, which begins today and runs through April 3. The memoir tells the accounts of famous food critic Reichl and her secret adventures as an undercover food critic for the New York Times in the 1990s.

I recommend it.
