Broadway Center announces Bill Cosby cancellation

This just in from the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts in Tacoma. ...

Tacoma, WA - Since October 27 of this year, the Broadway Center has been in discussion with Mr. Bill Cosby's management regarding the possibility of canceling his scheduled April 18, 2015, performance in Tacoma. Today, the Broadway Center formally announces that cancellation.

"This decision is not intended to pass judgment on Mr. Cosby - that is not the business of the Broadway Center," said David Fischer, the Broadway Center's Executive Director.

"We've been deliberate and thoughtful in making this decision, carefully considering our many relationships and legal obligations, including those with Mr. Cosby, with ticket buyers, and with our community. The Broadway Center is a non-profit organization that works diligently to strengthen our community's social fabric by building empathy, furthering education, and sharing joy. Ultimately, we were not confident in our ability to meet those objectives by proceeding with Mr. Cosby's performance in Tacoma," said Fischer.

"In making this decision, the Broadway Center also took into consideration the financial harm we will suffer by cancelling, and the even greater financial risk of moving forward with the performance," concluded Fischer.

The Broadway Center is offering all ticket buyers the option to exchange their tickets for another of the many great performances ahead, or to request a refund. The Box Office team will be reaching out to all ticket holders in the coming days to make exchange and refund arrangements.  Box Office hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and representatives may be contacted via phone at 253.591.5894, or toll-free at 1.800.291.7593.

Fleetwood Mac Tacoma Attack: Back from going their own way

Fleetwood Mac is better when it includes the rich tonality of balladeer and multi-instrumentalist Christine McVie, as will be the case in Tacoma Nov. 20.

It shouldn't be necessary for us to tell you why Fleetwood Mac is one of the greatest bands of the rock era, but we love our young readers so here goes: if the only album Fleetwood Mac ever released was 1977's Rumours, it would still have been plenty. Like Michael Jackson's Thriller or Adele's 21, Rumours in its day was an album that pretty much half the U.S. population owned. At least seven of its tunes were, and in some cases still are, radio fixtures around the English-speaking world. Even Glee dedicated an entire episode to ruining such otherwise unimpeachable singles as "Go Your Own Way" and "You Make Loving Fun." Fun fact: singer Christine McVie composed the latter song for the guy with whom she was cheating on bandmate John McVie, then told John she wrote it about their dog. As the social media put it, it's complicated.

Funny thing is, Fleetwood Mac would still be a household name even if Rumours had never existed. They'd already released 10 albums, including the megahit self-titled effort that gave us such perennials as "Landslide" and "Rhiannon." Lindsey Buckingham joined for that album, on the condition that his girlfriend be allowed to come aboard as well. Her name? Stephanie Nicks - though the world knows her better as "Stevie." After Fleetwood Mac and Rumours, the hits kept on coming; but behind the scenes, things were dicey. It's hard to sustain a band when both its key couples are going through acrimonious breakups. Even the lyrics on Rumours are essentially beautiful F-U's; yet the follow-up album, Tusk, was an idiosyncratic masterpiece. Fleetwood Mac remained a hit factory even after Buckingham went solo in 1987. It seemed at times the band could hardly stand to be in the same room, and Christine McVie went her own way in 1998, ostensibly for good, saying she'd had it with touring.

There were rumours for a while that Sheryl Crow, a Nicks disciple, would join the band in place of Christine McVie, but those never panned out. Instead the band launched a world tour with neither performer in 2009. But guess what? That damn Glee episode worked. It brought FM back into the public eye, reinstalling Rumours on the Billboard chart three years ago. From then on it was only a matter of time till Christine McVie came back into the fold, writing or co-writing over half the tracks for an upcoming, as-yet-untitled album. That gives you the chance to do something few have been able to do in over a generation: catch the reunited Fleetwood Mac, live and harmonious. We guess it's true what they say: "Don't stop thinkin' about tomorrow."

Playin' It Hot: Loud and proud with Charlie Daniels

Charlie Daniels / press photo

I can't and won't profess to be a country music aficionado. Luckily for our purposes, however, I do know someone who can lay fair claim to being an expert: my father-in-law, Greg Stevens. Now in radio ad sales (and occasional jingle writing), he spent decades singing and playing guitar for a touring country band called The Wichita Linemen. When I learned Charlie Daniels was playing the Lucky Eagle Casino, I contacted Greg immediately, as I knew he'd played with Daniels on numerous occasions.

It may surprise you to learn Daniels began his career as a session musician who played with Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan and wrote an album cut for Elvis. There's no question Charlie Daniels has established himself since then as one of the greatest crossover artists in the history of country and Southern rock. I asked Greg how he met the Grand Ole Opry inductee and North Carolina icon. "Charlie Daniels is a very benevolent fellow," Greg began with no hesitation. "I worked a fundraiser, and (Daniels) offers his services to various charities." In his home state, for example, Daniels produces annual Volunteer Jam concerts, which began in 1974 and continue to this day. "We had a place (in Wichita) called the Starkey (Supervised Living Program), which provides housing for people with developmental disabilities...Charlie got involved about 1988, and he came, and we had this big dinner and auction fundraiser on a Sunday night. The Wichita Linemen were playing, and he got up and did ‘The South's Gonna Do It Again' and ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia' and all his stuff that was in our repertoire. People just went crazy, so they had big plans: ‘Next year we're gonna do this big concert! Charlie's gonna play.' It's expensive to bring his whole band in. Our band was already there, so he would just send us a list of songs he's gonna do, and we'd perform those songs on the show. He'd close out the show...We did that for approximately ten years ... (The charity) made several million dollars out of that activity."

"For Y2K, New Year's Eve," Greg continued, "we opened for him at the Museum of the Horse in Ruidoso, New Mexico. After he got done performing and took it right up to midnight, his band and our band jammed together till two o'clock in the morning. ... There is no finer human being on the face of the earth," Greg concluded with obvious sincerity. "He's charitable, he's giving. He never ceases to amaze me as far as helping new country acts get into the business. He's extremely supportive of the troops. He's been to Iraq, I think twice. He's just a phenomenal human being."

Not to mention one hell of a fiddle player. Don't believe me? Ask a certain Lord of the Flies.

CHARLIE DANIELS BAND, 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, Lucky Eagle Casino & Hotel, 12888 188th Ave. SW, Rochester, $30-$70, 800.720.1788

Keith Urban's Washington State Fair concert rescheduled

Sad news rocked the Washington State Fair today. Country guitar god Keith Urban canceled his Sept. 13 appearance due to the passing of Nicole Kidman's father, Urban's father-in-law. Appropriately, The Fair sent its condolences to the couple, and went back to work wrangling giant pumpkins.

Then, good news hit. ...

Puyallup, WA - Sept. 12, 2014 - The Keith Urban concert at the Washington State Fair has been moved to next year, on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015. The concert was postponed due to a death in the family.

Ticket holders for the 2014 Keith Urban concert have two options with the tickets they presently hold for the show. They are:

1.   Hold onto your 2014 tickets, as they will be the tickets you use for the Sept. 19, 2015 concert date. The concert ticket will also act as your Fair gate ticket and concert ticket. If you keep your ticket to use in 2015, you are guaranteed the same seat you selected for this year's postponed concert.

2.   To return the ticket for a refund, go to your point of purchase. When purchased through the Fair, you will receive a full refund. This transaction must be completed by emailing boxoffice@thefair.com by Friday, October 31, 2014. Or visit the Fair box office at 9th Avenue SW and Meridian Street in person between now and the end of the 2014 Fair.

Ticket holders may still use the Fair gate admission portion of their concert ticket to attend the 2014 Fair, which runs through Sept. 21.

Storm Large to return to Tacoma

Storm Large will perform at Tacoma's Theater on the Square Sept. 4. Photo credit: Laura Domela

The budding cabaret scene in the South Sound will likely never be compared with post-World War I Paris or Berlin in its Weimar Republic heyday. No matter, we're simply happy that there is something different. Over the years, the Weekly Volcano has learned that blatant sexuality doesn't have the staying power of intelligent sensuality, which is what Portland resident Storm Large promises at the Theater on ther Square Sept. 4.

During the mid-2000s, Large and her band, The Balls, brought their "Loungecore" act - a hybrid of lounge, jazz and rock - to the South Sound.  The Balls mashed popular songs - such as ABBA's "Take a Chance on Me" and "Dancing Queen" with Iron Butterfly's  "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" or Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" with Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back" - then run them through the Jazzomatic. The beautiful, full-bodied six-foot blonde exuded sexuality; pole dancing on the mic stand, her red dress toyed like Sharon Stone in "Basic Instinct," until you can hear the jealous slaps across men's faces. Gyrating in a crouched position she rattled with a full-tilt banshee metal screech, then oozed jazz and undulated up. The Weekly Volcano knew chanteuse's talent - vocal strength and stage presence - could take the nation by storm.

And she did.

She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show, Rock Star: Supernova.

The following year she took a career departure and starred in Portland Center Stage's production of Cabaret with Wade McCollum. The show was a smash hit, earning Large glowing reviews. As was her next show, Crazy Enough, which ran 21 straight weeks to sold out shows in Portland. Crazy Enough appeared Off-Broadway in spring 2012 and Simon & Schuster published a book version of her autobiography in November 2012.

Large made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally.

Large will return to Tacoma, performing at Tacoma's Theatre on the Square on Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18-$48, and on sale now.

Kristian Bush of Sugarland to perform at JBLM FreedomFest

Kristian Bush, one-half-of platinum-selling country duo Sugarland, will perform at Joint Base Lewis-McChord July 4. Photo credit: David McClister

Grammy Award-winning performer, songwriter and producer Kristian Bush really does actually sing; it's just been little awhile. Bush is well known and lauded as a multi-award winning songwriter and musician; yet other performers sing his words. But these days, as a solo artist, currently on a tour to promote his new songs, Bush is cozying up to the mic. And for the performer, singing, playing and performing is extra sweet.

Bush has been writing and performing music for more than two decades. In the early 1990s, he formed a folk-rock act called Billy Pilgrim with fellow writer and performer Andrew Hydra. Billy Pilgrim was successful and brought acclaim and accomplishment to the pair. However, it was another important pairing that really put Bush's career in overdrive.

This summer Bush is out on the road performing on the 2014 "Put Your Soul In It Tour," with a stop right here in South Puget Sound. Bush is the featured performer at the 2014 JBLM FreedomFest being held July 4 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Bush takes the main stage at 6:30 p.m. and will entertain audiences until 8 p.m. According to the performer's website, he will perform with a five-piece band including Rebecca and Megan Lovell of roots duo, Larkin Poe.
