Crazy Mountain Billies are just crazy, man. Crazy ...

WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2011 >>>

Catch Louisiana's Vagabond Swing, along with local favorites Brotherhood Of The Black Squirrel, Trees Without Leaves, Love Songs From The Hated and Western Haunts tonight, starting at 8 p.m. Or, if that's not your ticket, browse the Volcano's extensive South Sound live local music listings here.

2. Tacoma City Ballet offers an open intermediate and advanced drop-in ballet class every Wednesday and Friday night at Merlino Arts Center. It's an awesome opportunity for those 18 and older to re-spark their love of ballet, or just have some fun. 3. Crazy Mountain Billies perform today at the Mandolin Cafe in Tacoma.

THE WEEKEND HUSTLE: Local theater, Tim Conway & Friends, Daubing with the DYDD, Retrospect, Free Comic Book Day, Tacoma Wine Classic - plus the boring lives of our writers

THE LOWDOWN ON WHAT'S UP THIS WEEKEND >>>

WEATHER REPORT

Friday: Rain, hi 55, lo 46

Saturday: Rain, hi 53, lo 43

Sunday: More rain, hi 55, lo 43

>>> FRIDAY, MAY 6: LOCAL THEATER BONANZA

Holy guacamole! This weekend is, like, totally stacked when it comes to local theater. Tacoma Little Theatre has Always, Patsy Cline (reviewed by Joann Varnell here). Harlequin's Unexpected Tenderness, by theatre heavyweight Israel Horovitz, opens Thursday. Tacoma Musical Playhouse offers Hello Dolly. Prodigal Sun in Olympia pushes out Amy's View. And Fame opens this week at Capital Playhouse.

>>> FRIDAY, MAY 6: TIM CONWAY & FRIENDS

Making fun of little people is funny. Everyone knows it. Well, except for little people that is. Comedian Tim Conway sure as hell knows it. Crap, dude probably made a small As-Seen-On-TV fortune hocking those Dorf videos back in the day. While Conway's official bio relies heavily on his 11-year stint on the Carol Burnett Show and six Emmy's, it's those Dorf videos we'll always blame him for. Friday, Tim Conway and Friends make their way to the Pantages Theater.

  • Pantages Theater, 7:30 p.m., $42-$89, 901 Broadway, Tacoma, 253.591.5890

>>> FRIDAY, MAY 6: RETROSPECT

You were big in the ‘80s. Not, like, fat ... like a big deal. You were boss. Luckily, the annual Urban Arts Festival is approaching, meaning the season is upon us for Urban Arts Festival fundraisers - like this Friday's at The Space, being referred to as Retrospect. For those that need clarification, the subtitle to Retrospect is "A Totally ‘80s NEW WAVE Dance Fundraiser." Get it? You should ... you were big in the ‘80s.

>>> SATURDAY, MAY 7: FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

On the first Saturday of every May since 2002, comic book stores across North America have joined with every publisher they can find to give away comic books - it's called Free Comic Book Day. Major operators like Marvel, DC and Disney provide stacks of recognizable characters, from Spider-Man to Mickey Mouse, while small independent publishers like Aspen, Oni and Top Shelf take the opportunity to draw some much-needed attention to themselves.According to local comic peddler John Munn, "There is literally something for everyone, young and old, whether it's your first comic ever or your four thousandth." Free Comic Book Day will be celebrated at local comic book stores all over the area. Check our story for more details.

>>> SATURDAY, MAY 7: DAUBING WITH THE DYDD

Ever wanted to play bingo with the Dockyard Derby Dames, Tacoma's rough-and-tumble roller derby league? Seriously? You've actually said to yourself, "I'd like to play bingo with the Dames?" Well, OK then ... Saturday is your chance. Join the DYDD at Muckelshoot Bingo from 9:30 p.m. - 2 a.m. for the appropriately titled "Daubing with the Dockyard Derby Dames." Get your picture taken with the Dames, enjoy a night of music, fun, and party lights according to hype, and possibly walk away a big winner. It's a total win-win-win.

  • Muckelshoot Bingo, 9:30 p.m. - 2 a.m., $10 for ten games, 2117 Auburn Way South, Auburn, dockyardderbydames.com

>>> SATURDAY, MAY 7: THE TACOMA WINE CLASSIC

The Tacoma Wine Classic is billed as the "premiere wine event in the South Sound region." While that's pretty prestigious stuff, it's probably not even the best part. The BEST PART is the annual event, which features some of the grandest food and drink available, supports Tacoma Community College's core mission of making higher education more readily available in our community. Money raised through the Tacoma Wine Classic go to things like scholarships, student support, faculty development, library acquisitions, childcare for student parents and worker retraining. It's seriously important stuff. Go here for ticket information.

  • LeMay Family Collection Foundation at Marymount Event Center, 5:30 - 10:30 p.m., 325 152nd St E, Tacoma, 253.272.2336

>>> WHERE OUR STAFF IS GOING

NIKKI TALOTTA Features Writer
This weekend calls for working the bar, pulling weeds and mopping floors, and hopefully a day of breakfast in bed, flowers, baths, and not having to change one diaper.

CHRISTIAN CARVAJAL: Theater Critic
I will be in theater heaven or hell, depending on your perspective, as I have four shows to see and review. I also have two Mother's Days to celebrate. And, since I'm getting married in three weeks, I should probably hit the gym a few more times. I look too much like a writer.

MATT DRISCOLL: Editor
The family is finally getting settled in to our new Hilltop palace, so the seemingly endless battle to get out of boxes is finally coming to an end. There's a Costco trip on tap this weekend, certainly, and the back door needs weather stripping. Both of those activities will, no doubt, be awesome. I'll also spend some time gazing at the fine photography provided by Jason Ganwich for this week's Weekly Volcano Summer Guide, which hit streets today. It's another great special section - and, in addition to the photos - the words ain't bad either.

JOANN VARNELL Theater Critic
Hopefully the weather will be nice and I will forget about my looming stack of grading. On Sunday I will end every request with the phrase, "because it's Mother's Day."

REV. ADAM MCKINNEY Music Writer
This weekend, I will be contemplating the probably too harsh review I gave to Thor. Beyond that, I will be contemplating the rainbow bridge that is featured in Thor, and which I failed to mention in my review. Seriously, guys, it sparkly.

ALEC CLAYTON Visual Arts Critic
Too much stuff. Friday night Unexpected Tenderness at Harlequin; Saturday working the PFLAG Booth at the Second Hand Safari Fleamarket; Saturday night Hello Dolly at Tacoma Musical Playhouse; Sunday PFLAG-Olympia meeting.

JENNIFER JOHNSON Food and Lifestyles Writer
Tatanka Take-Out and Pt. Defiance on Friday. Start the day with yoga then lunch at Northern Pacific Coffee Company on Garfield Saturday, followed by potting plants and an afternoon bike ride. Sunday is all about church and Mothers Day.

STEVE DUNKELBERGER Meat Market Photographer
The weekend started early last night at the Temple Theater for the Kent Morrill memorial concert. Then, I'll be seeing Hello Dolly at TMP this weekend and playing some ukulele.

VISUAL EDGE: “Culture / Subculture”

ALEC CLAYTON REVIEWS SOUTH SOUND VISUAL ARTS >>>

There is a very interesting show at the gallery at the Evergreen State College. It's called Culture / Subculture. The theme is precisely what the title implies - artists' interpretations of the way we are, our many cultures and subcultures as depicted and/or symbolized in photography, prints, drawings and sculpture from some of the better known artists in the Northwest and in the world including Kiki Smith, Diane Arbus, Salvador Dali, Jay Steensma, Mary Randlett, Judy Dater - and even a bunch of photographs by Andy Warhol of Keith Haring and friends.

That's part one of the exhibit. The works in that part are rarely seen art from the college's permanent collection. Part two features videos by Evergreen students, faculty, staff and alumni.

To read Alec Clayton's full Visual Edge column click here.

5 Things to Do Today: Fan-Go-Round, Joey Jewell & the Swingin' Sixties, James King & the Southenders, "Always...Patsy Cline" ...

Joey Jewell does his Sinatra shtick today at Jazzbones.

SUNDAY, MAY 1, 2011 >>>

1. Want to snag an autograph from Gaylord Perry and Don Larsen? If you're a baseball fan, chances are you do; they're in the Baseball Hall of Fame, after all. Lucky for you today is Fan-Go-Round at Cheney Stadium, a chance for said autographs, memorabilia, baseball broadcast banter with Bob Robertson and more. Best part: It's totally free. Info can be found here.

2. Joey Jewell & The Swingin' Sixties Orchestra present: "Sinatra at the Sands" today at Jazzbones. Or, if that doesn't tickle your musical fancy, try the Volcano's extensive live local music calendar here.

3. Sunday means it's time for the blues at The Spar in Old Town Tacoma. Tonight, James King & The Southenders do their thing.

4. Be like Volcano theater reviewer Joann Varnell and catch Always...Patsy Cline at the Tacoma Little Theatre this weekend. Look for Varnell's review in this coming Thursday's Weekly Volcano. Look for the Volcano's extensive list of local arts and events here.

5. Vote for the sexiest South Sounders you know. It's all part of the Volcano's 2011 Sexy Issue, coming in June.

5 Things to Do Today: University of Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra, Bates' Health Fair, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, Severus returns and Johnny Clegg

Severus returns to Hell's Kitchen tonight!

FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 2011 >>>

1. Check it: the University of Puget Sound's Symphony Orchestra and the Adelphian Concert Choir, the University Chorale, and the Dorian Singers will bust out an evening of material by Shostakovich, Chopin and Beethoven tonight. The free concert - which is open to the public - will also feature pianist Duane Hulbert and two top student soloists on violin and piano.

2. At Bates' annual Health Fair, the entire community will have a chance to learn more about the magic of yoga, the health benefits of therapeutic-quality essential oils and the joy (and overall wellness?) that comes from possibly winning a $100 Fred Meyer gift card. According to hype, the first 350 people will receive a gift bag full of health-related items. The yoga workshop will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and mats will be provided.

3. Want to see Spiro Manthou in a pair of high heeled shoes? Today's your chance (we think - most politicos participate). Today marks the annual "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event, designed to raise awareness and community conversation about sexual assault and gender relations. Sign in starts at 11 a.m. and the walk runs from noon to 2 p.m. downtown.

4. Dude, are you f***ing s***ting us? Severus returns to Hell's Kitchen tonight! This one is going to be epic. To browse the Volcano's entire, extensive South Sound live local music listings go here.

5. Johnny Clegg, billed as "one of South Africa's most celebrated sons," is headed to Tacoma tonight, bringing his guitar, career full of hits and genre-bending style with him. The songster behind "Great Heart," "I Call Your Name," "Scatterlings of Africa," "Take My Heart Away" and more, Clegg comes to the Rialto under the umbrella of his Spirit is the Journey 30th Anniversary Concert.

5 Things to Do Today: Z-Kamp Experience, Dana Nicole piano lounge, Children's Museum of Tacoma B-day, Vegan Book Club ...

The Z-Kamp Experience

MONDAY, APRIL 25, 2011 >>>

1. In Olympia check out The Z-Kamp Experience, with Dub & Jender at the Eastside Club. Or, if that doesn't tickle your musical fancy, browse the Volcano's extensive live local music listings here.

2. Monday night means the New Frontier Lounge in Tacoma's Dome District transforms into the Dana Nicole piano lounge. Expect originals, covers, and all sorts of goodness from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.

3. The Children's Museum of Tacoma turns 25 this year. Even better, on the 25th of every month they museum is celebrating by offering a party of some sort - from exciting games and activities to 25-cent admission. Find details here.

4. The Post Pop/Pop Art Exhibition has been running at The Gallery at Tacoma Community College for since February. Still, we know there are folks out there who have yet to see it. We also know it only runs through May 3, so time is getting short. Perhaps today is your day to finally see what the fuss is about?

5. Typically, the Vegan Book Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at King's Books. This month, however, a scheduling conflict necessitated a change - and the VBC meets TODAY! Discuss Melanie Joy's Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism starting at 7 p.m.

Arts Walk XLII and the Procession of the Species this weekend

PROCESSION OF THE SPECIES: Editor Matt Driscoll snapped this with his phone last year. He LOVES turtles.

OLYMPIA HOLIDAYS >>>

If Olympia had an official holiday, it would be the day of the annual Procession of the Species.

With no words and no motorized vehicles (except wheelchairs), the procession is a celebration of Earth Day, green power, the web of life ...  you name it.

It's also the year's best people-watching opportunity, particularly those people who just wake up the morning of the event and throw something together so they can walk in the procession. For the hip and sardonic, it doesn't get much better.

But the 17th Procession, happening Saturday, April 23, is just the polar ice cap crowning two days of festivities downtown.

To read Molly Gilmore's full article click here.

THE WEEKEND HUSTLE: Artifakt, Jane Monheit, "Sloth," Rainbows Over Tacoma and the boring lives of our staff

THE LOWDOWN ON WHAT'S UP THIS WEEKEND >>>

WEATHER REPORT

Friday: Partly sunny, hi 57, lo 36

Saturday: Sunny, hi 67, lo 43

Sunday: Chance of rain, hi 54, lo 45

>>> FRIDAY, APRIL 22: Artifakt

Well hot shit. The regular art-meets-music-meets-socializing-meets-(usually) booze phenomenon that is Artifakt has finally made it to Hell's Kitchen - throwing some flames on the show flyer for good measure. Those who know art in this town know about Artifakt and the cats behind it, so it should come as no surprise that Friday's Artifakt get-together at Hell's Kitchen will be a total who's who of the T-Town arts scene. Even better, expect performances from the Gritty City Sirens burlesque troop, music from Pioneers West, Elbow Coulee, Stoned Evergreen Traveler and DJ Slow, live body art and featured artists Laura Eklund, James Hume, James Tucker and Julie Luke. Tacoma is an arts town. Be a part of it.

  • Hell's Kitchen, with Pioneers West, Elbow Coulee, Stoned Evergreen Traveler, DJ Slow, 8 p.m., $5, 928 Pacific Ave., Tacoma, 253.759.6003

>>> APRIL 22- MAY 14: Sloth

Aaron Schmookler, director of Gold From Straw's Sloth, which opens Friday, says, "Scripts are notoriously difficult to read, laborious even ... Sloth was a page-turner on the first read. ... While (technical) challenges are things we've certainly wrested with, we trust the story to carry even where our technical solutions only hint at the play's events." Since the play is a comedy about a retired firefighter, it'd be easy to interpret this cynically as, "I hate reading plays, and we can't afford awesome fire scenes anyway." Luckily, we're fond of Schmookler, so we're confident his band of theatrical upstarts will bring it hardcore.

  • Theatre on the Square, through May 15, $23-$26, 901 Broadway, Tacoma, 800.291.7593

>>> SATURDAY, APRIL 23: Jane Monheit

For those with an affection for current jazz, it doesn't get much better than singer Jane Monheit, scheduled to perform at the Rialto in Tacoma Saturday. There's also a free pre-show lecture starting at 6:30 p.m. covering "Fostering the Next Generation of Jazz Masters," with local jazz artist Patrice O'Neill. Basically, it's a whole evening dedicated to jazz -- which sounds like a solid way to spend a Saturday. Monheit has been described as, "an extraordinarily gifted jazz vocalist whose sincere and romantic interpretations of songs has made her a favorite in both the jazz and cabaret worlds.

  • Rialto Theater, 7:30 p.m., free pre-show lecture 6:30 p.m., $39-$49 $25, 901 Broadway, Tacoma, 253.591.2013

>>> SATURDAY, APRIL 23: Rainbows Over Tacoma

Tacoma PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) hosts Rainbows Over Tacoma 2011 this Saturday at the Washington State History Museum. With entertainment from Kim Archer, Sylvia O'Stayformore, the Seattle Women Chorus' Sensible Shoes and Oasis Youth, expect an evening full of music and smiles - all for a good cause. Entertainment runs from 7 - 9 p.m., but stop by the museum early, starting at 6 p.m., to tour the exhibits before the show.

>>> WHERE OUR STAFF IS GOING

NIKKI TALOTTA Features Writer
This weekend is going to be a crazy mix of bartending, moving, Artswalking, more moving, Easter egg hunting, and even more moving.  Hope I get to sleep in on Monday.

Joe Izenman Theater and Music Writer
It may startle you to learn that this weekend I am actually doing some work for the Weekly Volcano. You know, instead of just writing a Hustle entry not quite every week. Lakewood Playhouse's Lion In Winter and Gold From Straw's Sloth both open this weekend, so you'll find me at one theatre or another for most of the weekend, when I'm not taking advantage of the sexy awesome weather by cycling, grilling, and collecting driftwood.

BRETT CHIHON Meat Market Correspondent/Features Writer/Rainiers Dude
Editor Matt Driscoll and I will be playing a drinking game that involves chugging a beer every time the Rainiers pitching staff gives up a hit. Yesterday they gave up 16. This should be fun.

CHRISTIAN CARVAJAL: Theater Critic
I'm seeing Riot to Follow's production of Eurydice on Monday. On Saturday, my fiancee and I are compiling the guest list for our reception in September...so this would be an excellent week to be awesome to us.

MATT DRISCOLL: Editor
Everything Brett Cihon says is a lie. He's actually in France. Trust me. Plus, I don't need the Rainiers pitching staff to give up hits to get me to drink ... I've got the drinking covered. Don't you worry about me ...

JOANN VARNELL Theater Critic
Cloth diapering, 9 a.m. at Best Loved Babies on 12th and Proctor-ish. I, my cutie little son and his cutie little bum will be participating in an attempt to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most cloth diapers changed at once. Sunday I'll be singing at Urban Grace's Easter Service at 10:30 a.m.

REV. ADAM MCKINNEY Music Writer
This weekend, after turning in an application on National Hiring Day, I'll be waiting by the phone for a response from McDonald's.

JENNIFER JOHNSON Food and Fitness Writer
Dinner and dancing Friday night. Farmers Market in Gig Harbor Saturday morning before stopping off at a yard sale or two then Sonja's clothing shop on North 21st followed by dinner with friends. Easter Sunday I'll attend church and a special evening program marking the resurrection of Christ.

5 Things to Do Today: Christian Lander, Dos XX Girls, Calvin and Lois, Dangerous Curves Ahead ...

K Records founder Calvin Johnson / photo courtesy of K Records

THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2011 >>>

1. Christian Lander, creator of the website Stuff White People Like (awesome!) will be speaking at the University of Puget Sound tonight. Even better, tickets are only $7. Or, if that doesn't get you excite, try checking out the Volcano's extensive South Sound arts and events calendar.

2. What says Tacoma better than the Dos XX Girls? What? You don't even know who the Dos XX Girls are? Use your freakin' imagination! Now ... what says Tacoma better than the Dos XX Girls? Nothing. Find out yourself tonight at Masa during another "T-Town Thursday with the Dos XX Girls."

3. Although its sophisticated summer movie series features the likes of Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock, the State Capital Museum in Olympia isn't exactly known as a center for cool cultural events. But now the museum, located in the beautiful Lord Mansion, is giving history a new spin. Today, K Records founder Calvin Johnson and artist/musician Lois Maffeo (better known simply as Lois) will discuss the history of Olympia's independent music scene. There'll be a musical performance to follow.

4. What happens when "East Coast Tata's Meets West Coast Tush," as the Olympia Film Society website is billing Thursday's performance of Olympia's Tush Burlesque and New York's Dangerous Curves Ahead? Well, now, you'll just have to show up to find out, won't you? The show will be hosted by Hattie Hot Pants and feature musical guest Holly Graham.

5. Squirrel Butter will be jamming at the Olympia Farmers Market. Mmmmm. Squirrel Butter ... Here's a look at the Volcano's complete live local music listings.

TONIGHT: Lula Washington Dance Theatre

The Lula Washington Dance Theatre PHOTO: Courtesy

JUST ONE MORE AWESOME THING TO DO IN OLYMPIA >>>

The Lula Washington Dance Theatre - instrumental in creating the mesmerizing movements of the blue-skinned Na'vi tribe in the film Avatar - performs tonight in Olympia at the Evergreen State College.

Choreographer Lula Washington of Los Angeles developed the tribe's signature movements, and she and members of the company wore motion sensors so that their movements could be translated to animation.

Washington was inspired by peoples in Africa and by the Australian Aborigines. "They have a certain way of greeting each other," she says in a press release for the show. "They have a certain way of hunting. They're very, very thoughtful of the environment, and they're very spiritual. That helped to flesh out the kind of movements that I used."
