5 Things To Do Today: Art At Work Party, "Girl Rising," poetry, Goth DJs and more ...

Tacoma arts will be on display tonight at the Foss Waterway Seaport. Photo credit: Pappi Swarner

MONDAY, OCT. 28 2013 >>>

1. Tacoma's Art at Work Month has become a Godzilla's feast of literary, visual and performing arts. Is there any other town of comparable size in the Western Hemisphere that has anything to match it? We don't think so. November is Art at Work Month, but the festivities actually begin at 6 p.m. with an opening party and the AMOCAT Arts Awards presentation inside and outside of the Foss Waterway Seaport. The free event offers appetizers, dessert and a no-host bar while Taxi Driver plays jazz, Tacoma Community College artists pour molten iron into blocks of ice, BareFoot Collective dances, Fab-5 breakdances, Tacoma Poet Laureate Lucas Smiraldo paints with words and Kat Ogden and Carla Barragan screen their latest films. As a bonus this year, Diane Hansen will remove the rope around her soon-to-be-installed public art piece, The Locks, so guests may personalize a provided padlock to hang on the installation. Toward the middle of the evening, Mayor Marilyn Strickland and the Tacoma Arts Commission will present the three 2013 AMOCAT Arts Awards winners, as well as the 2013 arts fund recipients. Dress warm.

2. The frights are upon us once again, and there are, as always, plenty of ways to spend the Devil's holiday. The Weekly Volcano has listed the parties, the theater performances, haunted houses, the kids fare and the rock 'n' roll here - it's up to you to decide where you'll go, and, of course, what you'll wear. Boo, South Sound.

3. Janelle Gordon is a Jamaican native who is a poet, performance artist, painter, designer and photographer, as well as a University of Puget Sound alumna. In her work as a mixed media artist, she promotes art as an experience and describes her style as "freestyle." Gordon is the author of the poetry chapbook i&i Reflections (2013), which explores issues of cultural, spiritual, and sexual identities. She has produced and participated in numerous art and fashion shows including Spectrum of Colors, which was composed of exhibits exploring the combination of writing and painting. Gordon is co-founder of JFearon art and design company and artistic director of kbphotoart.com studio. At 6:30 p.m., as part of UPS's Caribbean Writer Series, Gordon will lecture on "I & I Reflections: A Poetic Exploration of Spiritual, Cultural, and Sexual Identities" at the Rasmussen Rotunda in the Wheelock Student Center.

4. Academy Award-nominated director Richard E. Robbins' highly-acclaimed film Girl Risingis an innovative documentary telling the stories of nine girls from around the world who, through access to education and mentoring, have risen from poverty to productivity and a promising future, narrated by Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett, Selena Gomez and other Hollywood luminaries. At the heart of the film is the desire to educate girls and change the world. Uptown's Galaxy Theatre will screen the film at Gig Harbor's Galaxy Theatres as a fundraiser for Strong Women Strong World, YWCA of Pierce County and Jubilee Women's Center. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction and raffle, followed by a few words from the national director of World Vision Women of Vision's Cindy Breihl, before the 6:30 p.m. screening.

5. The stereotype is racing through your head: Everyone is in all black, many are wearing dark and heavy eye make-up and every now and then, the DJ stops a tune with a vertebrae-shattering guitar riff for chants of, "Kill! Kill! Kill!" But O'Malley's "Mondays For The Damned," is not some cartoon-like parody like you see in the movies. For the most part, the Monday DJ night is just your typical above ground underground new wave, synth pop, Goth, industrial and post-punk haven, and, tonight at 9 p.m., it's one of the best places to find yourself in the company of the city's Goth scene.

5 Things To Do Today: FLAVOR, Beautiful Tables, Living Art series, Hallowscene and more ...

Adriatic Grill will serve up tasty Italian fare tonight to help Tacoma Community House. File photo

THURSDAY, OCT. 24 2013 >>>

1. FLAVOR, a night of dining at immigrant-owned and immigrant-supporting restaurants will be held tonight with participating restaurants kicking back 25 percent of food sales to Tacoma Community House. Participating restaurants include El Toro downtown, Indochine, Lele, Gateway to India, El Guadalajara, Adriatic Grill, Il Lucano, La Crème Brulee, La Fondita and others. To add excitement to the night, TCH will offer several prize packages, including a seven-day Mexico trip, Keurig B70 Platinum Brewing System, restaurant gift cards and cookbooks. Read Kristin Kendle's full story, including participating restaurants, here.

2. The annual Beautiful Tables Showcase, in Lakewold Garden's Wagner House, evokes the gracious spirit of entertaining while offering the visitors ideas to continue the tradition at home. The event showcases more than 30 table decorators from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

3. Two highly distinctive, contemporary artists, Jeanne van Heeswijk and Randy Bolton, will be featured in free public events this fall as part of University of Puget Sound's Living Art visiting artist series. The events include presentations, conversations, a reception and art exhibit. At 5:30 p.m. in the University's Kittredge Art Gallery, van Heeswijk will discuss how art can promote urban renewal and participation, as well as the strategies that she employs in creating her socially engaged art.

4. Today, low-income people and the middle class are now in the same boat - living near poverty, or an illness, lost job, or disaster away from poverty. Eight low-income and middle class families living in and around Portland, Ore., each of whom called 211info, a nonprofit referral organization, in search of help with paying bills, finding housing, or getting advice on how to weather the current financial downturn, are profiled in the documentary, American Winter, directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Joe and Harry Gantz (Taxicab Confessions, The Defenders). Shot over the winter of 2011-12, this powerful film reveals the human impact of budget cuts to social services, rising poverty and economic inequality and the fracturing of the American Dream. Catch it at 6:45 p.m. in The Grand Cinema.

5. The frights are upon us once again, and there are, as always, plenty of ways to spend the Devil's holiday. The Weekly Volcano has compiled a giant list of Halloween parties, theater performances, haunted houses, kids fare and music - it's up to you to decide where you'll go, and, of course, what you'll wear. It all starts today. Boo, South Sound.

5 Things To Do Today: James Carpenter, Dorothy McCuistion, bus crawl, Speeding Kills Bears and more ...

James Carpenter to enter the Museum of Glass's Red Zone today.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 23 2013 >>>

1. Apparently the James Carpenter in the Museum of Glass's Hot Shop from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. isn't the 6-foot-5, 321 pounds offensive lineman for the Seattle Seahawks, but rather the glass artist born in Washington and raised in New England, who collaborated with Dale Chihuly from 1969 to 1974 on a series of sculptures. Today, he's known as a designer/artist for buildings, such as the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and 7 World Trade Center.

2. A reception for Dorothy McCuistion, whose art is currently on display at the Gig Harbor campus of Tacoma Community College, will be held at the Gig Harbor campus from 4-6:30 p.m. The exhibit, "Old Friends in a New Place," will be on display through Dec. 10. McCuistion works in art forms including monotype printmaking and painting in watercolor, acrylic and encaustic.

3. Are you transit curious? Are you a drinker? Want to take the bus and drink but not sure where to start? Tired of watching trains whiz by while you sit in traffic on the way to the bar? Maybe you just want to save money on gas for drinking? October is Try Transit Month offering the resources, motivation, and incentives to get you on the bus - such as drinks. The Downtown On The Go folks want you to take the bus more, so they've organized a bus crawl tonight. At 5 p.m., meet at 11th and Pacific Avenue. The first 40 people on the bus will enjoy a comfortable ride to The Eleven Eleven, The Red Hot and Dirty Oscar's.

4. Speeding Kills Bears will rock Jazzbones at 7 p.m. If you encounter Speeding With Bears, do not run. Avoid direct eye contact. Walk away slowly, if Speeding Kills Bears is not approaching. If the band charges, stand your ground (you cannot outrun it). Don't scream or yell. Speak in a soft monotone voice and wave your arms to let the band know you are human. If you have pepper spray, prepare to use it. If the band charges to within 25 feet of where you're standing, use the spray. If the band makes contact, curl up into a ball on your side, or lie flat on your stomach. Try not to panic; remain as quiet as possible until the attack ends. While in Jazzbones, be aware that you may encounter Speeding Kills Bears at any time. Be sure the band has left the area before getting up to seek help.

5. In 2011, readers of this fine rag voted the Top of Tacoma Bar and Cafe the best bar in Tacoma. This was due in no small part to its well drink Wednesdays. Two dollar well drinks after 7 p.m. Are you kidding? That's, like, riding the train to funkytown for only eight bucks. Yes, please. The kitchen stays open to midnight. Choo, choooo!

5 Things To Do Today: 253 film shorts, boating chat, jazz jam, industrial DJ and more ....

A young boy goes on a quest to be immortalized in the Guinness Book of World Records in the film "One For the Record Book." Courtesy photo

MONDAY, OCT. 7 2013 >>>

1. The Tacoma Film Festival is on, celebrating current independent film from around the globe ... and in our backyard. The 253 represent at this year's TFF. A whole slew of local film shorts will be screened at The Grand Cinema from 4-5:30: Harbor Island (Mystery, 23 min, Scott Capestany); Light and Black (Drama, 10 min, Brian Parker); Look Up In the Sky (Drama, Thriller, Sci-Fi, 9 min, Arthur Rains-McNally); One For the Record Book (Comedy, 5 min, Emily Bjarke); Practical Things (Drama, 5 min, Lindy & Kris Boustedt); The Shootout (Western, 20 min, Craig Muller, Tonya Yorke); The Small Stuff (Drama, 3 min, Andrea Capere) and The Sweet Sorrow (Drama, 12 min, Jeff Barehand).

2. Toscanos Café & Wine Bar and Cline Cellars have teamed up to raise money for Good Samaritan Hospital's Cancer Care Fund. Beginning today, buy a glass of Cline Cellars Wine or special "Pink Cocktail" at Toscanos and receive a free hand-painted collectable cordial glass. Each week the Puyallup restaurant feature a different glass color. For every bottle of Cline wine poured at Toscanos this month, Cline will donate $1 to Good Samaritan. And, Toscanos will match that donation.

3. Meet authors Anne and Laurence Yeadon-Jones and learn about their latest addition to the Dreamspeaker Guides featuring Gig Harbor and other South Puget Sound boating destinations at 6:30 p.m. at the Tides Tavern. Puget Sound - A Boater's Guide is the seventh Dreamspeaker Guide and captures a fresh perspective to cruising our local waters.

4. Pianist Nate D., bassist Cameron and drummer Peter T. have launch the city's newest jazz jam inviting talent to sit in as the house trio explores straight ahead, funk and space at 8 p.m. in The New Frontier Lounge. Not all gigs qualify as a hang, but this one has the precise alchemy that could draw the area's best players: a high level of musicianship, a relaxed atmosphere and a sympathetic intergenerational crowd. Ask any working jazz musician, and the hang is what it's all about.

5. O'Malley's "Mondays For The Damned," is your typical above ground underground new wave, synth pop, goth, industrial and post-punk haven, and, if you're into it, it's one of the best places to find yourself in the company of the city's goth and industrial scene. Night Shift (Nicole and Aaron) and guest DJs will spin, while Rich Sumner screens videos and movies. Get dark over $3.25 micro brew pints and a pound of wings for $5.50.

FLAVOR: A night of ethnic dining to benefit Tacoma Community House

Some days we want to eat chicken feet. we want tripe and trotters, crispy fried intestine and all the assorted culinary weirdness that allows Anthony Bourdain to laugh all the way to the bank. We would be just as bored with cheeseburgers every day as someone living in, say, Mauritania would be with nothing but Thieboudiene and Mahfe.

As the South Sound has grown from a culinary backwater to a more cosmopolitan culinary forward region (Charlie McManus to the Mark to Marrow and the few in between) with a supporting cast of international cuisine refugees from all corners of the globe, we have noticed a slow but steady growth in ethnic fare since 1999.

The good folks at Tacoma Community House are well aware of the South Sound's melting pot. TCH provides programs and services to immigrants, refugees and others to help strengthen their lives and help them become a part of the community.

Of course, TCH's efforts take money.

No doubt it was a joyous moment when the idea to host a night of regional ethnic dining as a fundraiser hit the brainstorming chalkboard. It's brilliant.

FLAVOR, a night of dining at immigrant-owned and immigrant-supporting restaurants will be held Thursday, Oct. 24 with participating restaurants kicking back 25 percent of food sales to TCH. Participating restaurants include El Toro downtown, Indochine, Lele, Gateway to India, El Guadalajara, Adriatic Grill, Il Lucano, La Crème Brulee, La Fondita and others. See the full list of participating restaurants here. The list could go deeper, especially in the local Asian culinary field, but it's a worthy start.

To add excitement to the night, TCH will offer several prize packages, including a seven-day Mexico trip, Keurig B70 Platinum Brewing System, restaurant gift cards and cookbooks.

Mark Oct. 24 on your calendar as the night you stand up for immigrants while sitting down for a meal.

China Davis launches an Indiegogo campaign for "Arctic Days"

China Davis performing at the Hard Rock Cafe in Seattle. Photo credit: Pappi Swarner

Gig Harbor born, but Northwest raised rock band China Davis has launched an Indiegogo campaign for their upcoming album, Arctic Days, which core members, and brothers, Ben and Ted Fuller have been working on since their birth. I have heard snippets, and read lyrics, for the past two years. It's full of mystery, beauty and a sense of yearning. Tacoma musician, poet and artist Jeremy Silas has added his talent to the project, too. Read more about the band's new effort and where the $4,000 it's asking for through an Indiegogo campaign will be going, below then scroll down to check out the video for "Anjilla" off Arctic Days.

5 Things To Do Today: Altercation Punk Comedy, PARK(ing) Day, studio tour, Lord Franzannian and more ...

JT Habersaat and his Altercation Punk Comedy Tour have been getting in the van and zig-zagging across the nation since 2008. Courtesy photo

FRIDAY, SEPT. 20 2013 >>>

1. JT Habersaat is punk rock. And he's funny as hell. No stranger to Comedy Central, Brian Posehn and Black Flag's Henry Rollins, Habersaat is deep in the comedy scene. Currently on tour, Habersaat and his motley crew of comedians are bringing their comedy to Le Voyeur in Olympia at 10 p.m. Appearing with Habersaat is Kristine Levine from Portlandia as well as Andy Andrist and Eric Hurst."I would say we all approach comedy with a certain dark sense of humor and a ‘no holds barred' attitude that lends itself perfectly to a ‘punk' comedy tour," Habersaat said. Read Nikki McCoy's full feature on the Altercation Punk Comedy Tour in the Music and Culture section.

2. Holy Leslie Knope! Can you imagine Tacoma without Optimist Park? Without Ursich Park? Without anywhere to take your dog off the leash and let her run? Even in dense, urban areas, open space is a calming force, giving us a place to sit, lie, tag zombies or walk amidst the birds and the trees. National PARK(ing) Day - the annual global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into "PARK(ing)" spaces: temporary public places - invades Tacoma from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As part of the title's double meaning, the parks will temporarily be set up on metered parking spots in downtown Tacoma, challenging local businesses to be creative within a limited space - to revisit how public space can be utilized beyond its conventional uses.

3. The Greater Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour, now in its 21st season, becomes a three-day event this year, with studios open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through Sunday. Artists on this tour are selected by a jury to ensure that they each have a high level of quality, design, and uniqueness in their works, as well as a studio set up that is worthy of being open to the public. There will be 21 studios on the tour, featuring 24 artists. Artwork media include oil, watercolor, and pastel paint, sculpture, wood, mixed media, and more. The tour includes artists in the Gig Harbor, South Kitsap, Fox Island and Key Peninsula areas.

4. The Lord Franzannian Royal Olympian Spectacular Vaudeville Show promises a "fast paced variety show" with "a little something for everyone." Will this mean jugglers? Probably. Contortionists? Perhaps. Rampant fun? Almost certainly. Proceeds benefit BigShowCity, a non-profit Performing Arts Organization that supports and helps finance burgeoning artists. They say laughter is good medicine. Here's a heaping spoonful of proof at 8 p.m. in The Midnight Sun Performance Space.

5.New Queens On the Block celebrates their first anniversary with a huge drag variety show at 9 p.m. in The Urban Onion. Hosted by Selena Veyron and Veronica Audrey Du'Pompadour, expect to see drag from queens and kings, skits, and live acts.

5 Things To Do Today: Italian night, "This is Martin Bonner," halfway to St. Patrick's Day and more ...

I better see you at Morso.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 17 2013 >>>

1. Tonight, Morso converts into an Italian bistro. The Gig Harbor wine bar pulls out a special Italian menu that includes traditional favorites such as cannelloni, seafood linguine, pasta puttanesca and chicken rigatoni. No Italian dinner is complete without a glass of wine, which will be discounted to $5 while they last. Run a little pomade through your coif, and head out to enjoy a sampling of Italian dishes with a view of the harbor.

2. Martin Bonner (Paul Eenhorn) leaves his old life behind and relocates to Reno, where he finds work helping released prisoners transition to life on the outside, while trying his hand at speed dating and passing time as a soccer referee on weekends. He meets Travis Holloway (Richmond Arquette), who has just been released from prison after serving 12 years, and strikes an up an unlikely friendship that offers them reciprocal support and understanding. This is the film This is Martin Bonner. Catch it at 2:20 and 7:05 p.m. at The Grand Cinema.

3. Usually when you go to the casino you just lose money - but tonight could be different. Danny Vernon's Illusions of Elvis will be at the Red Wind Casino. Travel out to Yelm and have a great time with the King's likeness, starting at 6:30 p.m.

4. If hearing the sound of your own cackling voice echoing off the walls of your shower stall has you craving the sound of something a bit more harmonious, check out the local songbirds and storytellers at Victory Music Open Mic at the Antique Sandwich Co. It's guaranteed to be jam-packed with gorgeous sounds and humbling verses, as the South Sound's greatest up-and-coming acoustic musicians bare their souls impromptu-style beginning at 7 p.m.

5. Doyle's Public House throws a "Halfway to St. Patrick's Day Party" featuring traditional Celtic tunes by The Fire Inside at 8 p.m.

First Peek: The Hub at Gig Harbor

Planes, bikes and beers on The Hub at Gig Harbor's back patio. Photo credit: Pappi Swarner

Given the breakneck pace of most people's lives, sometimes neighborhood dining spots really do the trick - predictable, affordable and filling. I was happy to hear business partners Pat Nagle and Carole Holder were bringing their bicycles, pizza, burgers and beer concept to the other side of the Narrows, opening The Hub at Gig Harbor Monday, Sept. 16. The two took over the restaurant space at the Tacoma Narrows Airport. I found myself looking around and trying to remember the room before it looked so "Hub"-ish - reds, golds and bicycle parts. The change is dramatic ... and welcoming, full of colors and bicycle kitsch, such as mounted handlebars and saddles to resemble trophy animal heads. When full, as Friday's investors' party and Saturday's test run with friends, the atmosphere is lively and roaring, but it manages to be calm and serene too, with patio seating facing the runway and a large, outdoor beer garden off the left side.

Your dish favorites from the St. Helens Hub Restaurant grace the menu, loaded with pizza and burgers, a few pasta dishes and, of course, the Harmon brews. Fans of the weekend breakfasts at Hub and Harmon Brewery in Tacoma will now have to choose which side of the Narrows Bridge to start their Saturday and Sunday.

Many Gig Harbor familiar faces were in the house both nights, including chefs Lucas Ortiz and Jeremy Barber, and sous chef Aimee Cox, who command the kitchen.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gig Harbor embraces the restaurant. It screams, "Let's meet at The Hub," whether to enjoy drinks in the outdoor beer garden - lit by Tivoli lights, firewood and sunsets; enjoy burgers on the back patio and watch who exits planes; or watch the game, which is easy to do from all angles.

THE HUB AT GIG HARBOR, opens Monday, Sept. 16 for lunch, dinner and weekend breakfasts, 1208 26thAve. NW, Gig Harbor, 253.224.2624

5 Things To Do Today: "Young Frankenstein," Harbor Days, juried art show, Night Beats and more ...

Getting ready for a "roll, roll, roll in ze hay."

FRIDAY, AUG. 30 2013 >>>

1. If you're a geek of a certain age or, for that matter, anyone who loves cinematic comedy, you know exactly what happens when someone says the name "Frau Blücher." You know how to bring home the chorus of "Puttin' on the Ritz." You know who made a yummy sound, and you suspect Mel Brooks's 1974 masterpiece Young Frankenstein may be one of the greatest comedies in American cinema history. Whether you've seen it or not, we insist you follow your grentfadda's footshtops to the Washington State Capital Museum, at 9 p.m. where "Movies at the Mansion" presents an outdoor screening of the film. If it's brisk that night, some varm milk, perhaps?

2. The Weekly Volcano is synonymous with fun, so there's no way we would ever let Olympia Harbor Days festival pass without trumpeting it. Why? Because we love the hell out of some tugboats. And if there's one thing Oly Harbor Days is synonymous with, it's tugboats. And history. And fun. Is there another way we could use the word synonymous in this blurb? Probably. But why push our luck. The important thing is that you head down to Oly's waterfront 5-8 p.m. as well as Saturday and/or Sunday and get in on a late-summer rite of passage. Of particular interest are the annual tugboat races, which go down Sunday at noon.

3. The Odd Life is a Very Special Movie about a Very Special Boy who has Very Special Leaves growing out of his legs, and who helps a Very Special Town save its Very Special Pencil Factory. This Special Film screens at dusk - after a Special Performance by jazz guitarist Michael Powers, which begins at 5 p.m. at Point Defiance Park. Special.

4. "I'm on a boat!" Any bets if that's an artwork title at the 11th Annual Open Juried Art Show at the Harbor History Museum, which opens today? The museum nestles the water in downtown Gig Harbor. You can't walk the length of a plank without stumbling into a nautical reference. It seems like a safe bet for at least one of the 150 works by the 90 artists the Peninsula Art League curated would have a sense of humor. The show represents the second component of the 2013 Museum Art Series and follows the Maritime Art Exhibit which closed Aug. 25. An artists reception will go down 6-8 p.m. Why not be on a boat when you arrive?

5. No one ever accused the Night Beats of being a lazy band, and their most recent activity has been no different. With the release of their wild-eyed music video for their song, "The Seven Poison Wonders," off of their upcoming LP, Sonic Bloom, the psych-rockers have kept themselves very busy. Their show tonight at The New Frontier will be their last in these parts before the road warriors take off on yet another extended tour of the U.S. and Europe in support of their new album. Hang with MILK, Bath Party and the Night Beats beginning at 9 p.m.
