On March 1, 2012 local history was made.

The very first direct shipment of spirits since Prohibition happened in our fair city of Tacoma. Hot tipper (and booze pusher) Mick Wilcox of Click Wholesale Distributing let it be known through secret channels that the hand-off would occur on that Thursday afternoon at Engine House No. 9 in the Sixth Avenue Business District.

And just what liquor was special enough to earn this honor? Well, a crafted-in-Washington one, of course: Woodinville Whiskey Company's Headlong White Dog Whiskey.

The Weekly Volcano tossed a couple questions at Engine House No. 9 co-owner John Xitco on that historic day.

WEEKLY VOLCANO: How does it feel to be the very first recipient of a non-government controlled delivery of liquor in Tacoma since Prohibition?

JOHN XITCO: Anything non-government controlled feels fantastic.

VOLCANO: Will there be a ticker tape parade or any drink specials to commemorate this event in exciting local history?

XITCO: Dollar off drinks for all state liquor control agents. ... Just kidding since that is probably still against the law. We are going to frame the invoice and, believe it or not, we actually saved a little money.

VOLCANO: Will you name your next child after Mick Wilcox?

XITCO: Another child might be tough, but maybe our next cat.

Tacoma art instigator Lynn Di Nino sent us word the 9th and 10th (Horse) Calvary Buffalo Soldiers Museum on the edge of Tacoma's Museum District has undergone a refocus and a renaming. It's now called the Buffalo Soldier Museum, and according to the press release Di Nino sent, it's worthy of your attention.

To keep the memory of pioneering black soldiers alive, William Jones created the Buffalo Soldier Museum in a cottage on his property situated on the edge of Tacoma's Downtown Museum District.  Following his death on December 3^rd, 2009 at age 91, his daughter Jackie Jones-Hook began the process of formalizing the entity by filing articles of incorporation. 

The Museum, formally known as the 9^th and 10^th (Horse) Calvary Buffalo Soldiers Museum would like to announce its readiness to further educate the public on aspects of American history, to depict and illustrate the story of the all black regiment on the United States military, and to preserve memorabilia of historical significance.

According to his daughter Jackie Jones-Hook, who currently serves as the director of the private museum, "the collection contains military artifacts, an extensive library of books, articles and DVD's from her father's military career with the 10^th Calvary - the Buffalo Horse Calvary."  The Tacoma Museum is one of only two museums dedicated to the Buffalo Soldiers in the nation, the other being the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston.

Upon receipt of the legal non-profit status, the board met for the first time on February 4^th, 2012, to establish immediate goals, which include designing a program for youth educational tours of the museum.

Board members include, in addition to PresidentJackie Jones-Hook:

• Edvine Evans, vice president (retired Army Sergeant Major)
• William Watkins, treasurer (Union representative and Mr. Jones' grandson)
• Willie Stewart (former Tacoma school board member, past principal Lincoln High School)
• Lynn Di Nino (community organizer and long time family friend)

CELEBRATING HISTORICAL MOMENTS >>>

Justin D. Leighton, chair of Tacoma's Central Neighborhood Council, passed along Tacoma City Council Member Ryan Mello's announcement of a party Monday night at King's Books to celebrate Gov. Gregoire's signing into law the Marriage Equality Act.  Here's the press release:

Tacoma, WA: On Monday, February 13th, Governor Gregoire will make history by signing into law the Marriage Equality Act making Washington State the 7^th state in addition to the District of Columbia to legalize marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples.  The bill passed through the Legislature on a bipartisan vote in both the House and Senate and is now scheduled for signing by the Governor Monday morning.

"I've waited my entire adult life for this day.  Marriage is more than just a contract.  It's about love, commitment and mutual respect.  As I care for my aging and ill partner of 53 years, the need to protect each other with both the contract and love that marriage brings has become more necessary than ever,"  John McCluskey, local civil rights leader. 

To celebrate this historic moment a group of community leaders, the Pierce County Marriage Equality (PCME) Leadership Team is hosting an event to "Raise a Glass for Marriage Equality".  The event will be held at King's Books on St. Helens Ave. in Tacoma at 5:30pm Monday, February 13^th.  Co-sponsored by King's Books, Galanga Thai, and The Mix as well as co-hosted by Tacoma Mayor Strickland, Tacoma Council Member Ryan Mello, State Rep. Laurie Jinkins, Benjii Bittle and the entire PCME Leadership Team.

"Our local marriage equality leadership team and hundreds of advocates are trained and ready to talk to voters about why protecting all families equally under the law is so important.  First, we celebrate, then we will wake up Tuesday, February 14^th ready to do whatever it takes to ensure all families have equal protections under the law," said Ryan Mello, Tacoma City Council Member. 

Celebratory events like this one in Tacoma are being organized around the state and a statewide toast for Marriage Equality will take place at 6:00pm.

World's Youngest Person Born

TACOMA, Wash. -- The youngest person on Earth was born Sunday morning at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital.

Immediately upon entering this world, Grayson Dale Burlingame held the prestigious title of "World's Youngest Person" for approximately 4.2 seconds - until an even younger person was born somewhere else on this planet. On average, a baby is born every 4.2 seconds, according to world population statistics.

In 2011 at Tacoma General Hospital, 3,048 newborns claimed the title of "World's Youngest Person," at least for a few seconds. 

Grayson, who weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, was born to Tacoma residents Lisa Patterson Burlingame and her husband Jeff Burlingame, who beamed with pride over their son's accomplishment at such a young age. The parents attribute their son's remarkable youthfulness to diet, avoiding cigarettes, and the fact that he just now emerged from the womb.

Grayson himself didn't have the words to describe what it feels like to be so young. During the nearly 5 seconds that he reigned as the "World's Youngest Person," Grayson spent most of that time adjusting to the light while staring lovingly at his parents

The world's oldest person, Besse Cooper of Monroe, Georgia, couldn't be reached for comment. She was born Aug. 26, 1896 - a date when she briefly held the title of "World's Youngest Person."

Cosgrove says he's always wanted to do such a press release, calling it a "light-hearted counterbalance to the recurring ‘news' story ‘World's Oldest Person Dies.'"

I just call it pure brilliance.

Ugh. Bobble Tiki thinks he's officially reached middle age. Old and tired. Bobble Tiki used to do things like go to New York for Christmas or stay out dancing all night. This year for Christmas, one of Bobble Tiki's best friends gave him a toilet tank, and Bobble Tiki was in bed by 10 p.m. Ah well. Bobble Tiki will just keep on laughing to keep from crying. In the meantime, here's a quick look free events happening this week in the South Sound centering around old things - just like Bobble Tiki.

MONDAY, DEC. 26: Free Christmas tree collection and drop-off opportunities are available in Thurston County after the holidays. It is important for the safety of the crews and machinery that Blackwater ornament, pickle ornament, Frosty the Blow Job ornament, lights, tinsel, nails, wire, garlands and stands be removed from the tree. Bobble Tiki's rule of thumb is to take your old tree to the recycler in the same condition as he would find it naturally in the forest. TUESDAY, DEC. 27: On the way to the bathroom at 5 a.m. to pee for the fifth time of the night, Bobble Tiki's foot caught the cord of his old Apple 3400c and the laptop got slammed to the ground. He can still use it for word-processing, but the modem and floppy drive no longer work, meaning he has no way to transfer information off the computer. It's time to get rid of the thing. WEDNESDAY, DEC. 28: For a generation of youngsters raised in a world of electronic convenience it's hard to understand how people survived before the advent of cable television, the Internet, video games, Kindle Fires - much less electric lights and air conditioning. For them, The Job Carr Cabin Museum is like taking a step back into time, specifically in the mid 1800s. The museum itself is actually a log cabin, a replica of the one Job Carr built in 1865, less than two blocks from its original location. Check it out from 1-4 p.m. before it closes for the month of January.

THURSDAY, DEC. 29: How does the simple act of planting trees lead to winning the Nobel Peace Prize? Ask Wangari Maathai of Kenya. Back in 1977, she suggested rural women plant trees to address problems stemming from a degraded environment. Her tree-planting mission, which grew into a nationwide movement, has been documented in the film Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai. Community Cinema Olympia will screen the film for free at 7 p.m. inside the Washington State Capital Museum.

FRIDAY, DEC. 30: The Delbert McBride Ethnobotanical Garden, located on the grounds of the State Capital Museum, displays more than 30 species of Northwest flowers, shrubs, and trees that have been used for food, tools, and medicine throughout history by the Native American tribes in Western Washington. Check it out from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SATURDAY, DEC. 31: The best album of all time is the Spinners' Pick of the Litter. (Of course, number two is Gino Vanelli's Storm at Sunup, but that's another Freeloaders column.) All five musicians grace the silver cardboard with sexy smirks and checkered bell-bottoms. Bobble Tiki has heard lots of people say they don't like album covers that contain a picture of the band, but the Spinners do it differently. The five men can be cut out in paper-doll fashion and then glued to Popsicle sticks for your very own Spinners Puppet Show. (Disclaimer: Singer Pervis Jackson is squatting in the picture, so cut out Maurice White from Earth, Wind & Fire's 1973 release Head to the Sky and have the two sumo wrestle). The '70s may always be remembered best for bands like Journey, Foghat and the Bee Gees, but the Spinners remain one of the few bands that unfairly slipped through the cracks. Bobble Tiki's glad that more than 35 years later, as he dances before them Saturday during the band's free concert at the Emerald Queen Casino, he finally can look over at his friends and ask, "Can you dig it?"

SUNDAY, JAN. 1: Bobble Tiki and his creaky bones will run hysterically down the Point Defiance Marina into wintery waters of Commencement Bay in the hopes of a fresh start for the new year. Santa Claus has all the cold details here.
