Night Moves: Color Me Badd, Shai, Toyboat Toyboat Toyboat, Eric Tollefson Band, Campfire Cassettes, Mad Mardigan ...

Shake It Off

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

B Sharp Coffee House Tacoma - Downtown. The Linda Myers Band. All Ages. 8 pm.

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. Toyboat Toyboat Toyboat, Power Skeleton, Trueno, Tummler and Solomon, Rexx 8 pm. $5.

  • One of the things that tends to deter me from music with the "experimental" label is that it too frequently has a tendency to spiral out into free jazz journeys with no end in sight. My roots are too entrenched in pop construction for me to have much patience for 20-minute explorations. Toyboat Toyboat Toyboat never feel like they're noodling. Their avant-pop ditties are high on unorthodox instrumentation and off-the-wall ideas, but it all feels like it's in its right place. Of particular interest is the inclusion of a member who plays the Quintron, which is a rare synthesizer that functions off of exposure to light. It's propulsive, screwy music that lets things get experimental while always reassuring you that a sure, crazy hand is behind it all. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Tacoma Jazz & Blues Festival Dawson's Stage, featuring Keith Klawitter Jazz Alliance, Steve Stefanowicz, Palmer Junction, The Randy Oxford Band, Junkyard Jane. 2 pm.

Doyle's Public House Tacoma - Stadium District. Eric Tollefson Band. 9:30 pm. NC.

The Gig Spot Gig Harbor. Mystery Machines, Suite Clarity, The Orange Version. All Ages. 7 pm.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Color Me Badd, with Mycle Wastman, William Jordan. 8 pm. $25.

Jezebels Olympia - Downtown. Shai. 9 pm. $20.

  • Grab a date; Saturday's show at Jezebels will be historic. Early 1990s R&B harmonizers Shai rolls into Olympia. Not only does this show mark a significant visit from the platinum-selling crooners, but also a going-away party of sorts, as Jezebels - formerly The Mint and Barcode - will be shutting its doors after a decade on Fourth Avenue. Jezebels has been a part of the bedrock for hip-hop, rap and other urban shows, most popularly known for its famous dollar wells Wednesday nights, that left all competition in the surrounding 20 miles floundering and confused about what to do. Reportedly the venue will re-open as a live rock music venue, and rock a party that will surely be memorable with Shai singing and DJ Drastic spinning. And the number of live hip-hop venues continues to dwindle. - Jose Gutierrez

Louie G's Pizza Fife. Midstokke, Blue Helix, Late September Dogs, Jason Kertson & The Immortals. All Ages. 5 pm.

Maxwell's Restaurant + Lounge Tacoma - Downtown. The Kareem Kandi Band. All Ages. 8 pm. NC.

Night Moves: Wei Zhongle, Mosquito Hawk, CFA, Cottonwood Cutups, Stay Grounded, Shake It Off, Diamond Experience ...

Retrospecter

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

B Sharp Coffee House Tacoma - Downtown. The Cottonwood Cutups and The Rusty Cleavers. 8 pm. $5.

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. Fruit Juice, The Bugs, Retrospecter, the Echo Echo Echoes, 8 pm. $5.

Cork! A Wine Bar Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Cody Raymond. 8:30 pm. NC.

Doyle's Public House Tacoma - Stadium District. Stay Grounded. 9:30 pm. NC.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Kalimba: The Spirit Of Earth, Wind & Fire. 8 pm. $20.

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Scout's Honor, Slugjob, Polyan, Wei Zhongle. 9 pm.

  • I wonder if the people in Wei Zhongle know how to pronounce their band name, or if it's just a guessing game every time. Listening to their music, it certainly seems like they'd be cagy if you asked. Describing their music as "nu trance" -which, frankly, I do not approve of - the sounds of Wei Zhongle are hard to pin down. The Illinois trio frame their repetitious instrumental experimentations in a way that's precise to the point of abstraction. Utilizing a clarinet's trill as the analog version of a glitchy techno melody, they build songs that have the unsettling quality of electronic music, while still planting one foot in the flesh-and-blood world. They're a nightmare chamber act, concocting dizzying mood pieces that are as rich in texture as they are off-putting in their shifting structures. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Louie G's Pizza Fife. Mechanism, Boneshaker, Garden Of Eden, Gebular. All Ages. 7 pm.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Music and Art in Wright Park Benefit, with CFA, Ex Gods, Infinite Flux. Plus record release for MAWP compilation. 9 pm.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. 20th Annual Experimental Music Festival, with Mark Hosler, Impulsive Machinations, Arrington De Dionyso, Ton Trio II, Chaostic Magic, Giant Worm. All Ages. 7 pm. $10.

O'Malley's Irish Pub Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Birthday Bash featuring Shake It Off, Raptor Tractor, Regional Faction, Mad Mardigan. 8 pm. NC.

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. The Diamond Experience (Neil Diamond tribute). 8 pm.

Track House Olympia - Downtown. Mosquito Hawk, Ancient Warlocks, Sioux, Holy Grove, Shadows, 8:30 pm. $3.

  • To see Mosquito Hawk in person is to see the workings of four dedicated rockers, each bringing a stage presence that engages more than just your ears. Watch as Jerry Zeigler pile-drives his drums, float off with John Merithew as he noodles a guitar solo into your being, catch the rocker stance and bass manipulation of Sean McCoy, and just try and look away when Olivia Love dances and croons into the mic, "Don't try to love me ... just fucking suck on my tongue." Now put that intimate arrangement in a punk rock living room with four other bands, including Seattle fuzz-masters Ancient Warlocks, add the sweet sweat of a summer night, and see how that treats you. You can thank me later. - Nikki McCoy

Traditions Cafe and World Folk Art Olympia - Downtown. Kat Eggleston. All Ages. 8 pm. $10-$15.

Gladiators Eat Fire

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

502 Downtown Tacoma - Downtown. Michael Powers Birthday Celebration, with Carl Ratcliffe, DJ Hitman. 9 pm. $10.

  • Northwest jazz guitarist Michael Powers is a musician's musician whose work has continually progressed far beyond the standard jazz genre. Born in New York and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Powers took up the guitar to strengthen his wrist after a skateboard accident.  After graduating from Berkeley High at 15, he relocated to the Emerald City where he continued his musical explorations playing everything from jazz, blues, rock and pop. Powers kept his fingers limber by sitting in with some of the finest musicians in the city.  He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of fine arts in composition and performance in 1982 from Seattle's prestigious Cornish College of the Arts. While some of his influences came from Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Charlie Parker, George Benson, Stanley Jordan, and Miles Davis, he has successfully developed his own unique touch.  Powers, celebrating a birthday, will perform with Carl Ratcliffe's fusion jazz band at the 502 Downtown bar. The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. The Thermals, Big Eyes, Wheelies. 9 pm.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Frightwig, It's OK, Rocknho. All Ages. 8 pm.

  • The bill for this show at the Northern is uncommonly stacked. In addition to featuring the feminist punk luminaries of Frightwig on tour for the first time since 1995 (!), they're bringing with them Robert Hecker's post-Redd Kross project, It's OK!. It's an embarrassment of riches, in case you hadn't caught on. Even though the shadow of Redd Kross would naturally loom over any band that Robert Hecker might form, It's OK! do a good job of following in those footsteps - as they have since 1992 - while slyly subverting expectations. Melody and the power of a well-tuned song are clearly very important things to Hecker. Bursts of power pop give way to tender folk ditties before eventually circling back to the sort of angsty, blistering punk that made a name of Hecker to begin with. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Olympia Ballroom Olympia - Downtown. Andy Coe Band, Psychedelic Shadow Show. All ages, bar w/ID. 9 pm. $18-$10.

  • I have a confession. I love The Grateful Dead. I own Steal-Your-Face shirts. I have dropped and been "enlightened" by Garcia. I sometimes sing "Ripple" as a lullaby to my kids. The reason I'm telling you this is because the Andy Coe Band is coming to the Olympia Ballroom for a night of Dead covers. Coe (Skerik's Bandalabra, McTuff) can noodle a guitar like nobody's business and skillfully channels The Dead; his band backing up in all the right layers. To compliment this already awesome night is The Psychedelic Shadow Show, a band that covers Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Cream, Buffalo Springfield and other famous ‘60s bands, complete with light show and lasers. Starchild Creative will also provide a backdrop of live show entertainment on a big screen. Groovy baby. - Nikki McCoy

Ain't Got Time to Bleed

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. Dead To Fools, Zook, Ain't Got Time to Bleed. 8 pm.

  • The first, discordant sounds to come squealing out of "Necrophilia" legitimately caught me by surprise. Up until that odd guitar sound, Dead to Fools were setting up this song as another tossed-off bit of chugging garage rock - but that modest curve ball reframes the band and suggests slightly more ambition than you might expect. While the rest of the song is the sort of charmingly sloppy Nirvana pastiche you might it expect it to be, there's still a glimmer of inventiveness as play that might reveal itself more as this still-young band grows to find its footing. The casual button-pushing subject matter of their music is hilariously on-the-nose, but Dead to Fools is the kind of band that makes mindless moshing seem like the only proper response. - Rev. Adam McKinney

  • Kildjate Moussa Albadé is a singer-songwriter from Tuareg, Niger. He's currently touring through the U.S. under his TisDass moniker. What distinguishes Albadé is his soulful and pristine guitar work. Finger-picking out a melody that slowly insinuates itself into your head, he's content to let that progression ride out and form a groove. He doesn't sing in English, but everything that he needs to convey is communicated through his nimble guitar and endearing voice. When he performs in Olympia, he'll be backed by the experimental pop outfit Brainstorm, as well as iconoclastic K Records alumnus Angelo Spencer. It all sounds like an eclectic night of merging cultures, which is something that doesn't happen frequently enough in the indie scene. I'm thrilled to hear the new sounds made by TisDass and company. - Rev. Adam McKinney

  • As of press time, I'm not even sure if I like the Cosmopolites, but they do, blessedly, give me pause. What I know for sure is that they're compelling. There's something at once cheesy and subversive about the music they make. Blending a syrupy mixture of light jazz and provocative experimentalism, the duo arrives at something akin to progressive rock (which can essentially be synonymous with the more divisive "jazz fusion" label), but with a giddier, geekier bent. Read Rev. Adam McKinney's interview with the Cosmopolites in the Music & Culture section.

  • I can't remember when I met Mike Coucoules. Years and years ago at Cole's in Ruston is my guess, well before it burst into flames, before his auto accident benefit jam at Seafarers Sports Bar in 2006, and before I became a groupie when Coucoules played bass in Malcolm Clark's blues trio. For certain I wasn't in the picture when Coucoules picked up a guitar at 14, studied Hendrix, Cream, Zappa, CS&N and Steve Miller during high school, before a friend turned him on to jazz and CTI Records. "He showed me some jazz chords and changed my world. He told me I was going to be a good musician because I had a lot of feeling, something that took years to understand. My music is all about feeling, from the heart," Coucoules tells me. He's shared his heart with too many bands to count over the last 40 years, and holds a piece from every one, but his heart grew three sizes when he met horn player John Croarkin during a gig with the Blues Bentley Band. Blown away by Croarkin's chops and comps, Coucoules knew he was the missing piece to the CD churning in his head. The resulting Latin jazz blues country CD can be purchased, and the duo heard live, the next two nights.

The Purrs

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. CZAR, Breag Naofa, A God or An Other, the Vatican. 8 pm. $5.

  • Recently, a band called Skinny Puppy sued the U.S. government for playing their music at Guantanamo Bay. The price? $666,000. The crime was to use Skinny Puppy's music as a form of torture. We've heard many stories of these practices, over the years, of various bands (Metallica, Van Halen and Red Cross have all reportedly been used to break down interrogation subjects). I'll admit something right here: A 50-second song from CZAR played twice is enough for me to give my Social Security Number. I'm a perfectly decent fan of loud, aggressive, compositionally strange music, but CZAR take it to a different degree. The vocals make my throat hurt, the music pummels my tender ear drums, and it all leaves me crawling for an easy listening station. That being said, I'd spill all of my secrets if "Piano Man" played on repeat, so there's that. - Rev. Adam McKinney

The Half Pint Pizza Pub Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Marcha Marcha Marcha Birthday Bash with live funk. 10 pm. NC.

  • Ted Brown Music Outreach was introduced in 2007 by Ted Brown Music store in Tacoma, with the mission to provide children throughout the South Sound access to music through scholarships, instruments and education. Saturday, at Louie G's Pizzeria in Fife, TBMO is throwing a fundraiser and instrument drive. The event is all-ages, and features the Nolan Garret Band, SweetKiss Momma and two of TBMO's Live Out Loud! alumni bands - Stolen Society and A Fistful of Dollars. In addition to the awesome music, expect a raffle, silent auction and a dessert auction, with all proceeds going toward the 501c3 nonprofit TBMO, which works to put music in the lives of young people. The $10 cover includes an all-you-can-eat spaghetti feed. For more information visit www.tbmoutreach.org.

McCoy's Tavern Olympia - Downtown. Endino's Earthworm, Hellbelly, Mosquito Hawk 9 pm. $3.

  • It's been nearly a year since Endino's Earthworm played Olympia. I'm stoked they are making a much-needed return. Jack Endino, whose music-producing career includes Nirvana, Zeke, Soundgarden, etc., takes his ear for detail and his soul for sound to his own band, Endino's Earthworm. Blistering? Heavy? Punk/grunge/old-school? Sometimes words are too bland for what good music does. While reading about an awesome band is a static experience, what should really be done is to watch a band live, and let your being tell the description. Is it the cosmic rocking of neurons? The physical sensation of vibrating chords? The internal centering that shifts into play when a band has your full attention, keeping you from worry of the daily grind, allowing a more authentic existence to emerge? Show up to McCoy's Saturday night and find out. - Nikki McCoy

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. The Purrs, Trees & Timber, People Under the Sun, DJ Melodica. 9 pm. $5.

  • There was a moment in my conversation with Jima, frontman of Seattle band the Purrs, when I expressed how inadequate it is to simply call the Purrs a psychedelic indie rock band. While that might be ultimately accurate, it just doesn't quite do justice to what the band does. Let's take a moment, for instance, to consider the bands that the Purrs have shared stages with: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Pearl Jam and Okkervil River, just to name three markedly disparate acts. The Purrs are able to drift among scenes in a manner befitting of their intangible sound. Read Rev. Adam McKinney's interview with Jima in the Music & Culture section.

First Peek: Opening night at Rhythm and Rye in Olympia

Rhythm and Rye, Olympia's new music and whiskey venue, was packed opening night Friday, March 21.

Less than a week's time turn-around after ownership changed hands from The Royal Lounge to Rhythm and Rye, the venue brought in a packed house both nights of its opening weekend. Last Friday night, lines were around the block and people actually had to be turned away at the door due to full capacity.

"The last time I saw a crowd that big was Frank Black at the Eastside Tavern ten years ago," says owner/booker Andy Geertsen. "That was also the last time I even heard of a line around the block in Oly."

Hillstomp and Oly Mountain boys shook the crowd with their knee-slapping music. The audience was stoked, sound quality was great and even the bartenders, who had never worked together prior to that night, shook their booties between pours of Lucille IPA and whiskey Cokes.

EZ Foods served pulled pork sandwiches and veggie wraps through the new service window in the back room. Besides the occasional spilled beer and running out of tall cans of Rainer - which Hillstomp made sure to congratulation Geertsen on - the night went off without a hitch. Olympia Police Department even made an appearance, no doubt bored on their beat and wanting to check out some good music.

Saturday night was just as packed inside the bar with the grooves of The Brown Edition and DBST.

Word on the street is this venue is just what Olympia needed.

"We love you Andy!" says one Facebook fan. "Thanks for giving all of us music lovers a home again!"

Up next at Rhythm and Rye is Championship Friday night with special guests Ol' Mount n Dew followed by Rock Candy Burlesque's 2nd Anniversary party Saturday.

Rhythm and Rye is at 311 Capitol Way N. in downtown Olympia. Students with valid ID receive discounts at all shows. For updates and events, check out facebook.com/AndyinolyProductions.
