Night Moves: AKA and The Heart Hurt Goods, Kurt Lindsay, Death By Stars, The Evens, Zepparella, Ah God, You Are Plural and others ...

Spirits of the Red City

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

4th Ave Tavern Olympia - Downtown. AKA and The Heart Hurt Goods, Elbow Coulee and Armed With Legs. 9 pm. $5.

  • AKA and The Heart Hurt Goods is a hodge-podge of instrumental musicians honing everything from violin-play to drums, bass guitar and many more. With a funk/rock/hip-hop capability, The Heart Hurt Goods is led by frontman and former veteran of the Olympia MC-battle circuit, AKA. AKA's story is too lengthy for this short preview to respectfully explain, but what is not difficult is the act of participating and enjoying he and his band's music. They were selected at The Olympia Music Awards as Best Solo (AKA) and Best Hip-Hop Act of The Year and have received excellent reviews following performances up and down I-5 and the Puget Sound.  Here's the fun part: AKA and The Heart Hurt Goods is rocking this Saturday night at Olympia's 4th Ave Tavern. Joining them are Elbow Coulee and Armed With Legs, which makes for a full night of live award-winning music right in your vicinity. - Jose Gutierrez Jr.

502 Downtown Tacoma - Downtown. Weekend Of Jazz, featuring Deems Tsutakawa, Pete Kirkland. 8 pm.

Cork! A Wine Bar Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Kurt Lindsay. 8 pm.

Doyle's Public House Tacoma - Stadium District. Mighty High. 9:30 pm. NC.

Eagles Club Olympia - Downtown. The Evens. All Ages. 7 pm. $7.

  • With The Evens, Amy Farina barrels on the drums, sometimes sounding as easy as morning fog rolling over settled water, other times sounding as sharp and heated as a first piercing. When she sings, she saturates with feminine power. Together with Ian MacKaye's sometimes plucking, often grinding guitar and hard-hitting vocals that evoke nostalgia for your first Fugazi or Minor Threat album but also wakes up little pieces of your heart that weren't there before, the duo makes a memorable sound. Read Nikki McCoy's interview with Ian MacKaye in the Music and Culture section.

Harmon Tap Room Tacoma - Stadium District. Death By Stars, The West, Not From Brooklyn, Ever So Android. 9 pm.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Zepparella (Led Zeppelin tribute). 8 pm.

  • "DUN DUN." You already know what's happening. "DUN DUN." A cavalcade of snares and cymbals rupture. A whale of a drummer pounds. Two fair-haired boys and a skinny guitar wizard feel the rush of thousands cheering as the quartet launches in "Good Times Bad Times." Sorry, Led Zeppelin fans, but the song does not remain the same. Say hello to Zepparella, an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band that is eager to give a whole lotta love to Tacoma Saturday. These ladies take Zep's sweaty man-rock and give it a kick in the groin. Zepparella, which has been together since 2004, creates its own individuality by improvising within the framework of the original songs. Roberta Plant, Page Jimmy, Joan-Paula Jones and Johanna Bonham should be their stage names. The band is that good. - Weekly Volcano

La Gitana Olympia - Downtown. The Greta Jane Quartet. 6:30 pm.

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Moose Portrait, A Volcano, Ah God. 9 pm.

  • I guess we should've seen it coming, ever since lo-fi recording became its own modest movement, that some people would take that ethic to its natural ending point. And so, we must say, the genre dubiously dubbed "shitgaze" was an inevitability. Testing the limits of tolerable listening conditions, bands like Times New Viking and Psychedelic Horseshit found their audience, meaning that a whole cavalcade of murky bands would lurch forward. Ah God, from Portland, is such a band. Sounding like they were recorded in an underwater tin can, Ah God's music is actually quite compelling and deftly assembled, once you wipe away all the grime and peer through the proverbial greasy windshield. Embracing washes of reverb and prickly distortion, Ah God make psychedelic pop that even sometimes appears to have catchy choruses and canny hooks. The digging through the muck proves a worthwhile endeavor. - Rev. Adam mcKinney

Red Wind Casino Yelm. Jonathan Harris. 8:30 pm. NC.

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. Billy Wilson & The Bayou Blast. 8 pm.

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Vigilante Justice. 9 pm.

Urban Grace Church Tacoma - Downtown. The Warehouse Presents a Candle Lit Show with The Local Strangers, Spirits of the Red City, Bradford Loomis, You Are Plural. All Ages. 7 pm. $7 advance, $10 door.

  • The trio of You Are Plural make music for the kind of people that need a little more propulsion in their chamber pop. Made up of cello, Wurlitzer organ and drums, You Are Plural construct perfectly lovely tunes that benefit greatly from the sort of nervous percussion provided by not only the drums, but by the Wurlitzer. The organ furiously pulses in tandem with the drums, lending movement to the otherwise humbly beautiful songs. In recent years, as evidenced by their entrancing new single, "Rabbit Rabbit," You Are Plural have moved in a gently anthemic direction. Highlighted by the affecting vocal harmonies of Jen Grady and Ephriam Nagler, "Rabbit Rabbit" steadily pushes toward a crescendo that, though it may not quite be of a fist-pumping variety, still gets your blood going better than your average cello and organ outfit might suggest. - Rev. AM

Night Moves: Swingset Showdown, Rich Wetzel, Brown Edition, Magic Mouth, Fame Riot, Girl Trouble and others ...

Smashie Smashie

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. Swingset Showdown, Vacant Seas, Smashie Smashie and Infinite Flux. 8 pm. $5.

  • This is a band that describes themselves as a novelty act, though their music is far too complicated and off-putting to land them a spot on a Dr. Demento compilation. A piano-punk trio more on the Don't Stop Or We'll Die side than the Ben Folds Five side, Swingset Showdown find themselves building richly melodic jams that end up getting sidetracked by absurdity halfway to the triumphant chorus. At times, their music comes across like a friendlier version of Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies era Of Montreal. Even their sweetest melodies are infected with an eeriness that offsets the sugar. Off-kilter rhythms and tempo shifts serve as obstacles to keep the listener from passively absorbing the music. Swingset Showdown want you to be an active participant. Read Rev. Adam McKinney's full feature on Swingset Showdown in the Music and Culture section.

Harmon Brewery and Eatery Tacoma - Downtown. Rich Wetzel's Groovin' Higher Orchestra. All Ages. 9 pm. NC.

Harmon Tap Room Tacoma - Stadium District. Travis Larson Band, Torre. 9 pm.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. The Brown Edition, Down North. 8 pm.

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Magic Mouth, Double Dutchess, Glitterband. 9 pm. $5.

  • Magic Mouth recently got off tour opening for Gossip. It's easy to see why Gossip were drawn to them in the first place: Magic Mouth fold a myriad of influences into their sound, ending up with music that flies in the face of the recent trend of revivalism. Their funk, soul, and dance music isn't a pale imitation, but a full-blooded celebration of the kind of manic showmanship that used to define those genres. Magic Mouth's slight punk edge only helps to highlight and enhance the energy that past masters imbued into their music. It's all crazy momentum, kept in motion by incredibly tight musicianship. A dense bassline backbone keeps everything on track, hurtling through every joyously sweaty song. Going to see a Magic Mouth show is an invitation to let everything go and get in close contact with your fellow dancers. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Louie G's Pizza Fife. Windowpane, Riot In Rhythm, Mechanism, Amadon, Witchburn, The Fame Riot, Ben Union, The Fail Safe Project, Jason Kertson & The Immortals, The Crying Spell, Mom's Rocket, Insuburban Avenue, Clear The Chaos. All Ages. 11 am.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Girl Trouble, Trees & Timber, Red Hex, The Jilly Rizzo, plus BareFoot Collective dances to Ich Hunger film. 8 pm.

  • The thing about Trees and Timber is their music could be anywhere ... the soundtrack to a road trip for example. I could easily imagine slipping in their latest album, Electric Gypsy Lovechild, for a trip up the Kitsap Peninsula - their upbeat jams guiding my way. Trees and Timber could provide the soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino film, just as the main character beats the antagonist. On a mixed CD, their power pop would blend beautifully with the Violent Femmes and Dick Dale. And even though Trees and Timber have the chops to play anywhere, the place they will be Saturday is at The New Frontier Lounge as part of the line-up for Strapping Young Productions first, well, production. The band joins Girl Trouble, Red Hex and The Jilly Rizzo for the Sensory Overloads theme night, which includes a screening of Isaac Olsen's German epic, Ich Hunger, accompanied by The Barefoot Collective dance troupe. "Saturday is going to be a good fucking show," says Joe Baker, frontman for Trees and Timber. "Films, dancing, rock and roll, and a real-life variety show with Pierce County's heaviest hitters. Who could pass on that?" - Nikki McCoy

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. High & Lonesome Bluegrass Band. 9 pm.

Night Moves: Randy Oxford Band, Azar Swan, Ronstadt Generations, MC battle, Carly Rae Jepsen and others ...

Jesus On The Moon

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Capitol Theater Olympia - Downtown. For MCs By MCs Presents: 360 VS 206 Freestyle Rap Battle Preliminary. All Ages. 7 pm. $5.

  • Once again, Heretic The Heathen's For MCs By MCs Battle League sets the tone for premier hip-hop battles and events, this time by inviting some standout writers and MCs from Seattle to battle the best of The 360. Fortunately, there is not any true "bad blood" between the areas, but a slight rivalry is alive and healthy. The all-ages battle is a preliminary invitational to see who will make the eight-person teams that will officially represent The 206 and 360 in an official area code battle to be announced later this fall. If you are interested in the next level of rhyme battling and repping your town/city/area code is essential - this is the place to be. - Jose Gutierrez Jr.

Harmon Tap Room Tacoma - Stadium District. Battersea, Jesus On The Moon, Rowhouse. 9 pm.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. The Randy Oxford Band. 8 pm. $9.99.

Kilworth Memorial Chapel/University of Puget Sound Tacoma - Northend. Ronstadt Generations Trio. 8 pm. $4-$12.

  • The Tucson-based band - Linda Ronstadt's younger brother, Michael, and his two sons, Michael G. and Petie - three voices and all multi-instrumentalists and solo artists in their own right - bring to life a repertoire that reaches back to the end of the 19th century while continually looking ahead into the 21st, with a rich innovation of original material alongside traditional Southwestern and Mexican songs. - Weekly Volcano

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Azar Swan, Delphic Oracle. All ages. 9 pm. $5.

  • Zohra Atash and Joshua Strawn make up the dark post-punk duo, Azar Swan. As residents of the NYC-based goth label, PENDV SOUND, it would be easy to guess what Azar Swan are all about even before you saw a picture of the pair looking moody, black and intimidatingly stylish. That's actually a quite apt way to describe their music. All violent synths and surging bass and thudding drum machine, swirled together in a tangled web of angsty electronics. Azar Swan are all about creating this threatening musical façade - an assault of sexy darkness that recalls groups like The Knife and other practitioners are electronically enhanced gloom. No wonder, then, that they recently opened Martin Rev, of Suicide, the band that took doom and fear and dressed it up in just enough catchiness to let you sleep with the lights off. Well, "Frankie Teardrop" excluded. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Traditions Cafe and World Folk Art Olympia - Downtown. Erika Luckett, Lisa Ferraro. All Ages. 8 pm. $10-$15.

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Race To Extinction, Tatarus. 9 pm.

Washington State Fair Puyallup. Carly Rae Jepsen, Hot Chelle Rae. 7:30 pm. $20-$50.

Night Moves: Leroy Bell, Ed Taylor, Richard Album, Frances Rose, Summer Cannibals, Carletta Sue Kay and others ...

Palace Buddies

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

502 Martini Bar Tacoma - Downtown. Ed Taylor Band. 8 pm. NC.

Amocat Cafe Tacoma - Triangle District. Amocat Live! featuring the Amocat House Band. All Ages. 7 pm.

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Fingertips. 9 pm. NC.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. Leroy Bell & His Only Friends, Kim Archer. 8 pm. $15.

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. The Mighty Mighty Chitons, Frances Rose, Trevor Peach, The Old Salt. 8 pm.

  • The line between mainstream music and indie music has grown so thin that it's often hard to differentiate between the two. Recently, returning popularity of cheesy mainstream music from the '80s and the '90s have enveloped themselves in the output of indie artists, creating a kind of crazy verisimilitude where mockery and reverence blend together. Frances Rose, from Brooklyn, ride such a fine pop line that it's hard to tell why these songs are playing on indie blogs instead of on whatever "hot" Top 40 station. These are impeccably glossy electro-pop songs of the sort that inspire the kind of adulation that leads to young folks scrawling "Frances Rose" into their notebooks. This is a band that's made for bedroom posters. Frances Rose's music leads to a terrifying proposal: nostalgia for the now. - Rev. Adam McKinney

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Squeak & Squawk Music Festival 2013, featuring Twin Steps, Summer Cannibals, Tangerine. 9:30 pm. $7.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Richard Album and the Lifestyles, Palace Buddies and Stephen Steinbrink. 8 pm.

  • Richard Album (along with his band, the Lifestyles) is a master of power pop, straight down to the sort of vulnerable songwriting that once defined the genre. Similar to those artists, his album covers feature faux-heartthrob poses. On the cover of Sophomore he poses as a college man circa 1955, which he cribbed from Nick Lowe and Greg Kihn, who both cribbed from Frankie Avalon and other clean-cut heart throbs. As a musician, Richard Album tends to find the middle ground between the too-brief punk blowout and the power pop treatise. Album's voice cracks, more often than not, revealing the sort of love-starved boy that Costello, Jackson and Lowe always represented. Read Rev. Adam McKinney's full feature on Richard Album in the Music and Culture section.

Sanford and Son Antiques Tacoma - Downtown. Squeak & Squawk Music Festival 2013, featuring Carletta Sue Kay, Hands In, The Optimistics. All Ages. 6 pm. $7.

Night Moves: Vanguard, Industrial Revolution, Autumn Electric, Shyan Selah, Palmer Junction and others ...

Autumn Electric

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE GREATER SOUTH SOUND >>>

Bob's Java Jive Tacoma - Central. Vanguard, Sei Hexe, Tummler & Solomon. 9 pm. $5.

  • I love it when Olympia and Tacoma music blends. It's like Korean barbecue washed down with PBR. Saturday, Vanguard, a favorite Olympia band, is playing at Bob's Java Jive, a favorite Tacoma venue. Vanguard's lo-fi punk metal sound use to be the work of an octopus for a drummer and a diddler of thrash metal guitar. Now, Vanguard is even more sexy and sophisticated with the addition of a backbone bass player and a vamped up sound - think early Metallica with that raw punk-garage that feels specific to Olympia. Rounding off the bill are Sei Hexe, an all girl metal band touring from Portland, and Tummler & Solomon, sludge rockers from T-town. - Nikki McCoy

Doyle's Public House Tacoma - Stadium District. Industrial Revolution, with D'Vonne Lewis, Evan Flory Barnes. 9 pm. NC.

The New Age Outlaw

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

The Embers at Indian Summer Olympia. Tarik Bentlemsani. 6 pm. NC.

Emerald Downs Racetrack Auburn. China Davis. All Ages. 6-9 pm.

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Rose Gold. 9 pm.

  • Hailing from Bozeman, Mont., Rose Gold make uniquely difficult music to anticipate or describe. What generally starts as sort of the fuzzy, meek alt-rock songs tend to descend into howling madness without much notice. Much of this is due to lead singer and bassist Birdie Bowie. Her voice has a vulnerability to it that intensifies into strikingly emotional shrieks. At times, Rose Gold are quite reminiscent of Hole, an observation that their blood-curdling cover of Hole's "Retard Boy" confirms. If you were to ask Rose Gold to describe themselves, though, they'd probably use the term "nightmare-pop," which is their self-defined descriptor. It's a provocative notion, nightmare-pop, and I think it does well to describe the shaky beauty of Rose Gold - that prettiness that always teeters on the verge of dread. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Ape Machine

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

12th and Jefferson Olympia - Downtown. Stupid Fucking Ramp Party with Fitz of Depression, DJs Mike Corvin and Dalton Goodwin. 2 p.m. $20 covers entry, keg cup and food with proceeds to the Casey Heath Memorial Fund

  • It's time again for Oly's favorite backyard skate jam - the Stupid Fucking Ramp Party (SFRP) - a place for ripping, riding, and hanging out with beers, barbeque and bands. Fitz of Depression is playing this year with the Have At Its and DJs Mike Corvin and Dalton Goodwin spinning hardcore classics - the perfect soundtrack for Lib Tech riders and local rippers to hit the ramp. What makes this particular show special - besides Fitz shows are few and far between - is it's a tribute to the late, great Casey Heath, who won "Best Trick" the previous three years. "I decided this year it would be appropriate to have Fitz return. They played the first party here, and were also a huge part of all the other benefits for the Casey Heath memorial fund," said Scott Lewis, event organizer. "They're about as local skatepunk as it gets, and they're the homies. Like, they'd be here even if they weren't playing anyway." Prepare to be rocked. - Nikki McCoy

The Embers at Indian Summer Olympia. Vince Brown. 6 pm. NC.

Harmon Tap Room Tacoma - Stadium District. Science! 6 pm. The Vaudeville Gallows, The Bottlecap Boys, The Rusty Cleavers. 9 pm.

  • As much as I've always enjoyed the tone of bluegrass, I've tended to think that a lot of the bands in that genre more often than not sound very similar. There's not much distinction, I've found. While The Bottlecap Boys are planted firmly in the bluegrass niche - with some added elements of poppy hooks - they certainly distinguish themselves with their impressive musicality, which allows them to pull out all the stops in a delightfully show-offy way. In the lively "Try and Try," for instance, there's a bit of vocal acrobatics where the two lead vocalists seamlessly trade off word for word in a breakneck refrain. Also helping to make the Bottlecap Boys stand out is the wry humor that permeates their songs, even as they shine as tightly crafted melodies.- Rev. Adam McKinney

Night Moves: McTuff, Bodybox, Missionary Position, C.F.A., Shyan Selah and others ...

McTuff

LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT IN THE SOUTH SOUND >>>

Doyle's Public House Tacoma - Stadium District. McTuff. 10 pm.

  • Hammond organist Joe Doria, guitarist Andy Coe and saxophonist Cliff Colon cross the barriers of jazz with powerful keyboards, rhythmic drums, screaming sax and sometimes fuzz-distorted guitar in their band McTuff. Improvisational and funky with a whole lotta swagger, the band's epic jams knock the mind into the far reaches of a 1970s version of space and then butt into an uncontrollable groove. The Seattle band will give their drummer Tarik Abouzied a break, and pick-up drummer Barrett Martin (Mad Season, Screaming Trees, Walking Papers) for a free show at Doyle's Public House Saturday night. The show will be a sensory explosion, from the scent of Irish whiskey and the sound of improvisational wizardry to the vision of four talented musicians so deep in a jazz jam that they will be able to stop bullets, run up walls and crack heads from 40 feet in the air.  ... It's almost too much. - Ron Swarner

Harmon Tap Room Tacoma - Stadium District. Halcion Halo, Bodybox, Below Blackstar. 9 pm.

Jazzbones Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. The Missionary Position, Deborah Page, Sleepy Pilot. 8 pm. $10.

  • Jeff Angell is like some sort of rock n' roll prophet. Or yoda. Or yoda with hip bones. Or something. Dude's just really wise when it comes to the rock, music and what it's all about. "The truth is, I love stories and in three verses a song can say as much as a novel with what it leaves to the imagination. I didn't choose music it chose me and as miserable as I have made life on myself at times, I wouldn't have it any other way," he told the Weekly Volcano in 2011. Angell takes a night off from fronting the acclaimed Walking Papers band for a show with his other band, the soulful rock band The Missionary Position, which includes Walking Papers keyboardist Benjamin Anderson. Hmm. ... WP drummer Barrett Martin will be down the road the same night playing with McTuff at Doyle's. Where's WP bassist Duff McKagan Saturday night? - Weekly Volcano

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Pissbath, Gag, Life Form. 9 pm.

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Battersea, The Nadines. 6 pm.

O'Malley's Irish Pub Tacoma - Sixth Avenue. C.F.A., Gunslinger, Lady Ablaze. 9 pm. NC.

  • When you just need to beat the heat, or shake a shitty day, or celebrate a good one for that matter, then a good rock show can fill the void, getting into all the crevices of your brain and soul, like a quality coating of caulking. Not many folks in Tacoma do it better than Cody Foster Army, or C.F.A. Punk rock with a peppering of metal and stoner, C.F.A. always delivers a stellar live performance - so much that Ripple Music, the label that put out C.F.A.'s recent album, posted this on its blog: "To those of you who have had a chance to catch their live set, you understand what this entails. If you have not? Think, the Banana Splits. Just less appropriate and more sweaty." If that doesn't sell you on this show, let me add that two Olympia bands - Gunslinger and Lady Ablaze - are there to solidify the rock. Oh, and there's no cover. - Nikki McCoy

Red Bicycle Bistro and Sushi Bar Vashon. Bill Brown & The Kingbees. 8:30 pm. NC.

The Pig Bar @ South Bay BBQ Olympia - Downtown. The Oly Mountain Boys. All Ages. 7 pm.

9 pm.

The Spar Tacoma - Old Town. Reggae Night. 8 pm.

Stonegate Pizza Tacoma - South. Shyan Selah & The Republic Of Sound. 9 pm.

Uncle Sam's American Bar & Grill Spanaway. Race To Extinction. 9 pm.

Urban Grace Church Tacoma - Downtown. The Warehouse Presents: Lemolo & The Kaleidoscope Dance, The BareFoot Collective, MLK Ballet. All Ages. 7 pm. $18-$22.

  • The past couple of years have been exciting ones for Lemolo. Last year, in particular, saw the release of the Seattle duo's debut LP, The Kaleidoscope - an appropriate title, evocative as it is of the band's dreamy, summery shimmer. Capitalizing on the steam that Lemolo had been building up, The Kaleidoscope cemented them as one of the more buzzed-about bands in the Seattle scene, and landed them on year-end lists, including being named the number one best new band in Seattle by City Arts. Saturday, July 6, Lemolo will be performing the entirety of The Kaleidoscope, live on stage, as close to the sound of the record as possible. This is because they will be joined onstage by two dance troupes: The BareFoot Collective and MLKBallet. Read Rev. Adam McKinney's full feature on Lemolo in Northwest Military's Music & Culture section.

Dawson's Bar and Grill Tacoma - South. Steve Cooley & The Dangerfields. 9 pm.

Harmon Tap Room Tacoma - Stadium District. NWCZ Presents: I Like Science, Not From Brooklyn, Le Lo/Fi, DJ Hogwood. 9 pm.

Immanuel Presbyterian Church Tacoma - Northend. CATHEDRALS: Tacoma, with Paper Bird, Shenandoah Davis, Elk & Boar. All Ages. 8 pm. $16.

  • The concept of the Broadway Center's Cathedral series is simplistic to the point of perfection: get some beautiful-sounding artists to perform in beautiful spaces designed to bounce around beautiful sounds. These are not raucous events, but rather contemplative experiences that take exploit churches' natural abilities to heighten and highlight negative space. This time around, my money is on Denver's Paper Bird as the band most likely to fill in those empty spaces. A baroque art-folk-pop seven-piece, there's never a moment wasted or tossed away without being occupied by some lively instruments or flatly gorgeous harmonies. The opening track Rooms, "As I Am," is as potent an opening salvo as I've heard in some time, the energy building and building in a pleasantly organic fashion, the voices aching to pull every last note from deep inside, propelling them out with great velocity. - Rev. Adam McKinney

Le Voyeur Café and Lounge Olympia - Downtown. Bloodbirds, Planet Of Giants. 9 pm.

  • The similarities between Bloodbirds' album, Psychic Surgery, and the early Flaming Lips album, Telepathic Surgery, don't stop at the names. Like the work of the early Flaming Lips, Bloodbirds create psychedelic slash-and-burn screeds, with little dashes here and there of the kind of charming silliness in the lyrics that would eventually come to overtake the Flaming Lips. But Bloodbirds are in their larval stage, still hungry and fighting for attention, for credibility, and as such their music is uncompromisingly gritty, no nonsense rock. The type of brain surgery they do is less the gentle psychic variety advertised in their album title, and more the medieval kind - you know, the kind that involved ice picks and that aimed more for ridges and divots than anything in particular. Their music is a slapdash perusing of your brain matter. - Rev. AM

The New Frontier Lounge Tacoma - Dome District. Cody Foster's Birthday Party, with The Plastards, Blanco Bronco. 8 pm.

Northern Olympia - Downtown. Swamptiger's Birthday Bash, with Refugee, Heretic The Heathen, Swamptiger, The Blue, DJ Justincase, DJ Pasquan. All Ages. 7 pm.

Northern Pacific Coffee Co. Tacoma - Parkland. Heidi Vladyka, Gina Belliveau and Heidi Stoermer. All Ages. 8 pm. $4.

Olympia Ballroom Olympia - Downtown. Soulstice! funk fest with The Jefferson Rose Band, McTuff and The Brown Edition. 9 pm. $15.

  • "All the bands are top musicians," says Lee Brooks, who is presenting the third consecutive Soulstice! celebration in Olympia Friday. "The key word we've been using is "heavy." It's heavy funk. Its amazingly mind-blowing heavy funk." The Jefferson Rose Band, McTuff and The Brown Edition will be plowing through spring and straight into summer with their world-renowned funk, jazz, fusion and variations. Bonus: The Brown Edition - voted best band by Weekly Volcano readers in the 2011 Best of Olympia issue - will be playing a set hot off being named Best Funk/Fusion/Jam Album at the 2013 Independent Music Awards. After a predicted four days of rain, this Friday show will be a welcome-back party for the sun, perfect for a Soulstice! party. Come on down and get groovy. - Nikki McCoy
