• The ever-popular Tacoma hip-hop group The Breaklites just recently released the video for the title track from its fourth, full-length In The Trunk, which dropped in the summer of 2012. The video is the culmination from being on the road capturing the group in grainy, minimalistic black and white footage that compliments the song's simplistic, yet driving beat. The crew, which came together in 2008, has spent the last two years pushing forward with a growing group of musicians, and an ever-expanding fanbase. From rocking sold out shows to their first adventure down to SXSW, 2012 saw The Breaklites begin to enjoy some of the fruits of its labor, in that regard, the video for "In the Trunk" is a celebration of the work the band put in over the last several years. • The ukulele has had a moment over the course of the last half-decade. Unfortunately, to some, this has come in the form of tweeer-than-thou renditions of classic songs that are so disgustingly adorable your ears and heart melt. But, the "Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele" Jake Shimabukuro is not resigned to over-simplistic chord based apathy. Shimabukuro uses the micro-instrument to its full potential - beautifully interweaving instrumental odes with a maestro's touch. It is no wonder the Hawaiian born Shimabukuro has racked up untold millions of plays on Youtube. With a legion of fans, that include even the Queen of England, Shimabukuro is his generation's master of the ukelele. His latest album, Peace, Love, Ukelele, brings a lush orchestral accompaniment, produced by Alan Parsons no less!, and helps cement Shimabukuro firmly where he belongs - in a cannon of great, virtuosic musicians. Shimabukuro brings his nimble fingers and affable personality to Olympia's Capitol Theater Saturday; for anyone looking for a performance that may change their preconceived notions of the instrument, this is it. - Timothy Grisham

• With a rotating cast of contributors and performers over the past seven years, the core of Champagne Sunday is the creative brain of Jessi and Jared Fredeen. Jessi's huge, soulful vocals could star on Broadway, on tour with Garbage or in your church choir. Her voice - which draws comparison to Chrissie Hynde and Ani Difranco - ranges from a hushed lullaby to a soaring celebratory wail. Jared, armed with a James Taylor-ish voice, David Gilmore guitar skills and a passion for raw music, can rock star pose when Jessi goes big, then float on a cloud when she takes it into the ethereal edges. As the duo's recent release Heaven Knows proves, you can add Champagne Sunday to any bill, and it works. Unless you are the others bands on the bill, then you'll have to go to work. - Ron Swarner

• Wes Sp8 (aka Wes Speight, natch) strikes me as a ravenous consumer of pop music. Though he nonchalantly identifies himself as a singer-songwriter, he seems eager to experiment with just what the term means. From song to song, he tests out different personas of the classic singer-songwriter - whether showing off the swagger and oppressive distance of a Jim Morrison, the chilly command of an Ian Curtis, or the rough, masculine soul of Greg Dulli. As a singer, Speight possesses a soulful voice, which he bends and distorts to fit whatever effect he's going for. Though he plays with a band, it's hard to say if he'll be going solo this evening. The night is dedicated to singer-songwriters, including members of Trees Without Leaves and the delightful solvents. It'll be interesting to see which Wes Sp8 ends up emerging. - Rev. • It might be hard for me to judge Sam Russell objectively (like I do with all other music, clearly) because he just hits such a sweet spot for me. His laconic baritone immediately brings to mind the National's Matt Berninger, but the swooning country that surrounds his voice suddenly calls to mind Lambchop, those Nashville kings of delirious, delicate alt-country that evaporates like so many dew drops crawling down the face of a mason jar of lemonade. Lord. I can't manage to take in Sam Russell's music without collapsing in repose, a drunken smile spreading over my beet-red face, as visions of whiskey and hazy delusions flash behind my eyelids. That could be just me (it might literally be just me), but I'm not objecting. - Rev. Adam McKinney

• James Jenkins is a singer/songwriter who's been on the scene in Tacoma for quite some time. Whether in his own band (Mama Loves Daddy), or as former keyboardist in Umber Sleeping (now known as I Like Science), Jenkins has been known for creating music that nods to '60s and '70s psych, but cuts a path all its own. His latest project, People Under the Sun, is his most daring to date. Bringing more or less a metric ton of vintage synthesizers with them to every performance, People Under the Sun access the kind of carnival-psych of people like Syd Barrett, while still dipping into the sort of analog synth-rock of bands like the Buggles and Thomas Dolby. The result is heavily orchestrated pop music that only looks easy. — Rev. Adam McKinney

• Uncle Bonsai is the real deal. Filed most often under "folk" the original trio of Ashley O'Keeffe, Andrew Ratshin and Arni Adler made more than 200 original songs and toured like mad before taking an extended hiatus beginning in the very late 1980s. Then, in March 2008, the Bonsai came back. Maybe it was a change in the air, or maybe the world called for more beautifully weird storytellers to join the chorus. Whatever. The angelic voice of local legend Patrice O'Neill replaced O'Keeffe and the Zappa meets Peter, Paul and Mary crossbred was back. Saturday, Uncle Bonsai teams with feisty The Righteous Mothersfor two shows at Traditions Fair Trade and Cafe in Olympia. • Much has been said (by me, at some times) about how Elbow Coulee sounds like the meeting between pop-punk and dancey synth-rock, but the truth is that the band's range is larger than that. I mean, yeah, lead singer Andrew Tuller's voice does tend to sound pretty similar to that of the dude from the Offspring - but other than that, there are flourishes of lite prog-rock guitar noodling, mixing with dips into '90s emo and tight, spiky, early '00s dance-punk. It's a soup of offbeat rock from throughout the past couple decades, which makes for an intriguing and rather time-traveling listening experience, like flipping around the radio dial and landing on The End, KISW, or college radio, depending on which song (or, even, which verse) you happen to be hearing. - Rev. • Science! has reaped the benefits of hard work and staying grounded. The band was featured in High Times as January's unsigned band of the month, has a SXSW tour planned for March, and its clever and catchy tune, "Seattle Song," has received airplay on Jet City Stream and the Bob Rivers Show. Olympia readers knew what they were doing when they voted Science! "Best New Band" in this rag's 2012 Best of Olympia issue. Truth is, I shouldn't have to tell you about the band's renowned blend of rockabilly, honky tonk, folk and Americana, because you probably already know. You also may already know that it served as famed rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson's backing band on the tour to support her Jack White produced album, or toured with Adele at the height of her rise to fame. The Seattle band has become an institution, and when it returns to Olympia at The Royal Lounge Jan. 18 it is a homecoming of sorts for one of its members. Drummer/backing vocalist Kelly Van Camp is a Thurston County native whom performed in the early '90s power pop group The Noses, which featured John Merrithew of C Average and Tim Brown of the Dirty Birds. For $10, you will not regret catching a band with over a decade on the road, a deep discography and thousands of miles on the odometer; they are a band worth catching time and time again. - Timothy Grisham

• When it comes to interviewing bands, there are some band members who say few words. And there are band members who say everything so well, you'd like for them to just write the whole article. All girl indie rockers Full Moon Radio is one such band. Ali Baker and Sarah Lynn (third member, Jessie Jackson was not interviewed) discuss their show Saturday with The Hard Way and Glass Elevator at the 4th Ave Tav in Oly. The lineup: "It seems to me that the ‘high energy rock' element that existed here 20 years ago is starting to emerge again," says Baker. "I am really excited to play with some of the hard working bands made up of musicians who are inspired and have rock and roll dreams. There is something very innocent and sweet about it." The venue: "I have played the 4th Ave Tav before and it is awesome because the sound guy Ben is one of the best in the biz," says Lynn. "We will be playing a couple new songs, including one inspired by a bomb shelter at our practice space. If you have never been to a show at the 4th Ave, this is the one." - Nikki McCoy

• The back bar at McCoy's will surely be busy this Saturday as every leather clad, gravelly-voiced, long-haired or bald-headed hesher in Olympia will be scrunched near the stage - spilling bears and throwing horns - to witness thrash metal legends Coven and old school metal lords Demon Dogs rage the night away. John Boyce, bartender, booker and sound guy at McCoy's, talks about the last time Demon Dogs played, "It was awesome, just crazy energy - they're ferocious." And about Demon Dog's infamous drummer Jerry Ziegler Boyce states, "It's the most demanding thing I've seen him do." If you've ever seen Ziegler in action, then you know Boyce's words hold weight, and you'll be there Saturday night. - NM

• Over the course of the past couple of years the Maxines have evolved from a one off party-project to a band that has been barnstorming the Pacific Northwest with itsspecial brand of two-piece garage rock. The K Records duo of Matt Murillo and Kelly Norman have simply been one of the most upbeat and "fun" bands to see in a long while. Saturday the group will bring the party to Olympia's Northern for a show that promises to start the year off with a bang. Sadly, for those who love seeing the band, this may be the last time you get a chance to for an extended amount of time. Joining the band for the evening are the Vancouver, Wash. by-the-way-of Portland garage band The Sivas. The Shivas, who is the latest coup for K, has a high-energy blend of pop, garage and surf that almost sounds like the Velvet Underground and the Beach Boys simultaneously. Portland's Hooded Hags, featuring longtime K bassman Chris Sutton, brings the cool, Gories style garage, while Seattle's Wimps brings the full on '90s style garage punk experience to the table. - Timothy Grisham

• The idea of soul and rock becoming increasingly intermingled and on the mainstream radar, with bands like The Heavy and the Black Keys, is one that I've wrestled with over the past couple years. Of course, the issue of credibility and appropriation are always going to be present in the discussion, but to my ears the bigger issue is something much more intangible - a bristling that comes up my back, and I can't help but picture Blueshammer from Ghost World. Better than the large part of rock bands incorporating soul touchstones, The Missionary Position manage to emerge relatively unscathed from these comparisons. Their combination of alt-rock, post-grunge influences and '70s soul flourishes is tasteful and seemingly completely sincere, which helps a great deal in avoiding that bristling feeling. - Rev. • After living and traveling in Europe for the past year or so, singer-songwriter Heater Loepp has finally made her return to Washington. As the frontwoman for indie folk-pop outfit Santee, she started turning heads with her intimate lyrics, endearingly scratchy vocals and the warm bed of instrumentation provided by the rest of the band, which now includes Joel Myers and Conor Sisk from the Speedwobbles, and Spencer Kelley from Basemint. Word is that Santee is in the Swoon Records studio working on their long-awaited debut LP. It'll be about time for a band that has garnered as much good will as Santee has. In the meantime, their return to Tacoma is bound to be a joyous homecoming, full of drunken group hugs and even drunker dancing. — Rev. AM

• The culture of rockabilly is such a peculiar one, to me. This is a group of people (kinda like those mod weirdos) who bond over a very specific aesthetic - this antiquated genre of music, which has grown over the years to morph slowly with punk, creating this style all its own. With song titles such as "Six Inch Heels and Dynamite" and "Kitten's a Tiger," you'd hardly need to listen to know that the perpetrators, Hot Roddin' Romeos, are pure rockabilly through and through. Their music is nothing but blistering, skittering rockabilly punk, complete with the requisite tattoos, stand-up bass, curled lips and generous amounts of pomade. Saturday, they'll be joined by fellow rockabilly devotees, Hard Money Saints, which should effectively turn O'Malley's into a case study in this very particular subculture. - Rev. Adam McKinney
