MoveOn, a political action group, will host a "Stand for the Dream" rally at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at downtown Tacoma's Fireman's Park. Tomorrow marks the two year anniversary of Citizens United v FEC - the Supreme Court's decision that enables special interests - including foreign governments - to sway elections with money.

What can you expect at the rally?

According to MoveOn Tacoma host Janet S., "The street theater will be powerful - professional stage hands and actors are members of Occupy Tacoma and Bill Moyer of the Backbone Campaign is sending a beautiful Bill of Rights to lead the parade. Corporate robots will be dancing and speaking and Supreme Court justices will address the Citizens United ruling. Special guests will include We the People and Representatives (around 4 p.m.)."

The closing?

"... an incredible closing event in lights that will dazzle the human spirit," promises Linda Frank of Washington Public Campaigns.

Two weeks after Gov. Chris Gregoire announced her support for gay marriage legislation - and potentially putting the state on track to become the nation's seventh to fully recognize same-sex unions - State Sen. Jim Kastama announced today he will support gay-marriage legislation. Read the AP report here.

Kastama was one of six undecided senators on marriage equality - and a current candidate for Secretary of State.

The Puyallup Democrat is the 24th announced supporter of same-sex marriage in a Senate where 25 votes make a majority. Although Democrats hold majorities in both our state' chambers, a bill is not certain to pass, as some conservative Democrats have sided with Republicans on the issue.

In the last session, 43 representatives co-sponsored a gay-marriage bill in the House, which never made it out of committee.

Gregoire wants individual religious faiths to make their own decisions about whether or not to perform gay marriages, thus allowing freedom of religion and non-discrimination against marrying homosexual couples to co-exist.

Six U.S. states currently allow same-sex marriage: New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa. Gay marriage is also legal in the District of Columbia.

Downtown Tacoma Renaissance, Hilltop Tacoma crime, Commencement Bay Superfund site, Tacoma Dome, Sheraton Hotel, University of Washington-Tacoma and other major, and minor, Tacoma historical events and projects will be discussed on TV Tacoma over the next two weeks. The show Cityline will present a two-part special discussing the past 30 years of Tacoma's political history first-hand with Tacoma mayors. Doug Southerland (1982-1989), Karen Vialle (1990-1993), Harold Moss (1994-1995), Brian Ebersole (1996-2000), Mike Crowley (2001), Bill Baarsma (2002-2009) and Marilyn Strickland (current) shared their personal experiences, frustrations and triumphs.
