Suck on Summer Goodness: Adult snow cones

The evening air is getting a little cooler, and the countdown to Labor Day is on. How better to celebrate the last days of summer than with a childhood throwback ... with a twist. Toscanos Café and Wine Bar in Puyallup is serving up adult snow cones every Wednesday after 5 p.m. in August.

What constitutes an adult snow cone? Choose from raspberry, peach, mango, pina colada or pomegranate and add your favorite premium spirit for $9.95.  Think raspberry shaved ice with vodka, or mango and tequila.

"My favorite Toscanos shaved ice has to be pina colada because it gives you that Hawaii beach feel with an added bonus of a buzz," says bartender Lee Zander-Conn.

Toscanos being the classy place it is, the boozy snow cones are served in a martini glass.

Since this is the last week of August, no pressure - that means it's your last chance this Wednesday to sit at a bar and eat a cocktail with a spoon. I can assure you, this is the only case that would be appropriate.

Let's do the Puyallup!

By the way, the Washington State Fair's Luminasia exhibit - an exquisite take on the timeless tradition of Chinese lantern making - will be awesome.

Growing up in the Puget Sound, many of us remember local commercial jingles and catchphrases - "Sleep Country USA, Why Buy a mattress anywhere else?" and "Honk when you drive by Vern Fonk" are a couple that come to mind.

But perhaps none resonated the way "Do the Puyaaaallup" did when it cut through the clamor of TV or radio programs. It's as if those three words epitomized what it meant to be a kid.

Luckily, the jingle was kept as the Washington State Fair's tagline when it made the switch this year from the Puyallup Fair - a testament to being the state's largest fair, bringing in more than a million people each year.

"It's about keeping the tradition," said Karen LaFlamme, public relations for the Washington State Fair. "People love the jingle - it just makes sense to carry it on."

5 Things To Do Today: Science on Screen, Stephanie Porter, Kareem Kandi and more ...

George Ruben, a man out of step with the 21st century, is pathologically nostalgic for things that used to be and never will again. He sets out obsessively to chronicle these items in an opus he dubs The Obselidia. Watch it unfold at The Grand Cinema.

THURSDAY, JULY 25 2013 >>>

1. The Grand Cinema teaches science in a different way: First it secures a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Coolidge Corner Theatre Foundation to pair films with lessons in science. Next, it invites notable figures from the world of science, technology and medicine to give introduction lessons using those long pointer sticks to tap the screen while nodding their heads. Each film is used as a jumping off point for the speaker to reveal current scientific research or technological advances, providing the perfect combination of entertainment and enlightenment - even for the most science-phobic culture vulture. Then, of course, everyone watches the film, paying close attention to key factor brought to light by the big brains before the screening. Science on Screen kicks ends its run at 6:45 p.m. with a screening of Obselidia, a bittersweet love story about a librarian who complies an encyclopedia of "obselete things," and tries to live his life surrounded by objects that technology has rendered extinct. Dr. Elizabeth Fortenbery, a sociology professor at Tacoma Community College, will discuss what can be lost when a language disappears.

2. Freddy Pink will play blues and clssic rock at 6:30 p.m. in Puyallup's Pioneer Park.

3. Pacific Lutheran University continues its 15 annual Jazz Under the Stars concert series tonight from 7-9 p.m. The series, a different band every Thursday through Aug. 15, features singer Stephanie Porter tonight.

4. The Kareem Kandi Band will fill the lobby of the Hotel Murano with jazz from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m.

5. Cairo, Show + Tell and DJ Melodica entertain at 9 p.m. in The New Frontier Lounge.

Eat This Now: Mom's Sloppy Joe

Crockett's Public House's Mom's Sloppy Joe

Food Network celebrity Guy Fieri drove his fiery red Camaro up to Puyallup digs Crockett's Public House last fall to film Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives - which aired in March - and raved about Mom's Sloppy Joe. Naturally, I had to check it out.

Pulling around the corner to find parking already has me salivating as the air is filled with aromas of barbecue wafting around Crockett's.

Mom's Sloppy Joe ($11.99) features healthy portions of slow cooked ground pork and beef doused in a rich tomato sauce on a toasted sesame bun. The tomato sauce is packed full of flavor with just the tiniest hint of heat. The crisp fried onion garnish adds a nice flavorful texture to this sandwich, which begs of you to bust out the fork and knife. Served with a side of seasoned hand-cut fries this dish is absolutely reminiscent of the childhood home-cooked favorite and lives up to its name. Crockett's Public House is all about twists on comfort food.

You may also enjoy breakfast Saturdays and Sundays.

CROCKETT'S PUBLIC HOUSE, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to midnight Friday, 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, 118 E. Steward Ave., Puyallup, 253.466.3075

5 Things To Do Today: Spud Goodman tribute, "Jesus Christ Superstar," final stage shows and more ...

Spud Goodman / photo courtesy of Facebook

SUNDAY, JUNE 23, 2013 >>>

1. Bruce Walkup was the booking agent for Tacoma's Prosito Restaurant in the mid-'80s. Considered the first commercial venue to host alternative bands, Prosito's music was turned off by the Liquor Board for graffiti and noise complaints; Prosito let Walkup go. The restaurant morphed into the Central Tavern, which housed many a grunge-era show, then the 6th and Proctor Bar and Grill, and finally Hell's Kitchen (Gruv what?). To fulfill his musical needs, Walkup changed his name to Spud Goodman and bought time on Tacoma's cable system for a parody/music show.  With a spatula in one hand and an open bottle of Pepto-Bismol in the other, Goodman interviewed guests and provided airtime for alternative bands in the area. It was the beginning of many cable access music shows to hit the local airwaves. It was an awesome show. Spudman, his cast and crew will commemorate the show 3-7 p.m. at The Red Hot on Tacoma's Sixth Avenue. Click here to join the Facebook event.

2. The Messiah has returned. Once again. He's holding court in downtown Olympia, in Harlequin Production's Jesus Christ Superstar. For a man who's been dead some 2,000 years, Christ sure gets around. He's resurrected (almost) as often as Joseph, of Technicolor Dreamcoat fame. JCS is very loosely based on the Gospels, and emerges as a hip passion play with a heavy emphasis on human passion. And despite the title, the star is actually JC's betrayer, Judas, here depicted as a victim of circumstance. Catch the show at 2 p.m.

3. Two theater shows close today at 2 p.m. The Laramie Project, about the killing of a gay man, Matthew Shepard, in Wyoming in 1998, ends its run at the Tacoma Little Theater. Read Christian Carvajal's full review of The Laramie Project in Northwest Military's Music & Culture section. Same Time, Next Year, the story of a love affair between two married people who see each other only once a year over the course of 25 years, closes at Olympia Little theater. Read Christian Carvajal's full review of Same Time, Next Year in Northwest Military's Music & Culture section.

4. Havey ou been to Treos in Old Town Tacoma? Here's an excuse. The Alex Worland Jazz trio will set up in the corner from 3-5 p.m.

5. Meeker Days continues in Puyallup this morning with bands Sammy Steele Band and Aces Up beginning at 3 p.m.

Concert Alert: Cheap Trick to lodge guitar pick in your scone

Surrender!

When is the last time you had a guitar pick lodged in your ear? It could have been 2010 at the Emerald Queen Casino. That's when Cheap Trick came to town. Those who have seen Cheap Trick live - maybe "At Budokan" - you know guitarist Rick Nielsen hurls around 463 guitar picks into the crowd during the band's shows.

Cheap Trick's all right, they just seem a little weird.

Like ELO, Cheap Trick might be one of the only bands that rock ironists and sincere, lighter-holding buffoons like Bobble Tiki could ever truly agree on. The band's prowess at never seeming too far off current is almost psychic and their songs are irresistible. Beyond that, there's also the fact that at this point, something like four decades in, the band is an institution - and still rock it like they have everything to prove, which couldn't be farther from the truth.

Well, maybe. Cheap trick is headed to the Washington State Fair Wednesday, Sept. 11 two perform two of its albums - At Budokan and Sgt. Pepper Live - with an orchestra(!) The show will kick off at 7:30 p.m., and tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8 at www.thefair.com/concerts or (888) 559-FAIR (3247). Expect to pay $25-$55.

Bobble Tiki is currently trying to track down the accompany orchestra to discover if there's a rogue violinist with a propensity to fling bows into crowds. Stay tuned.

  • Underneath this respectable, suburban veneer lies a seething hotbed of decadence; behind a curtain of boring hides an orgiastic cacophony of richness. It's called jazz.
