Rockwell Powers and DJ Phinisey release video on how to throw a kickass album launch party in Tacoma

Last October, Rockwell Powers and DJ Phinisey released the album, Build. It received rave reviews, and was accompanied by a kickass release party at Grit City GrindHouse in Tacoma.

"It's clear that this is an album that strives to be more than just another album of blustering and posturing," wrote Weekly Volcano music critic Rev. Adam McKinney, in a feature story that graced the Volcano's cover. "Accompanied by the reading of a poem by Jesse Ann Fouts, opening track "BuildxPoem1" explores the compellingly picturesque idea of a city built of bones and flesh, flanked by seas of fear and longing.

"It's an entrancing image with which to open one's album, and Powers follows through on this promise, delivering an album that splits its time between melancholy ruminations about insecurity and spellbinding indictments of the state of music, arts and city. All of these themes are played out over a bed of tastefully restrained beats and washes of electronics."

The momentum for Build continues. A music video centered around the album's release has been, er, released.

"Directed by Portland-based filmmaker Yusuf Word, this video offers a look inside our preparation and execution of last fall's album release show at Grit City Grindhouse in downtown Tacoma," says Powers.

Check it out. ...

Powers and Phinisey will release two more videos this summer, directed by Tacoma's Laura Marshall and Peter Berkley, respectively.

Happy Wednesday! Enjoy!

Let's watch soldiers get haircuts

You want to know who knows all the gossip on Joint Base Lewis McChord? The barbers at the JBLM North Fort Barber Shop chat with soldiers all day long. Sgt. James Bunn of the 5th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment dropped in on the barbershop to chat with the barbers and snap photos. He created a video from the experience. Check it out below.

Video: I Corps Lt. Gen. Brown to Lt. Gen. Lanza change of command ceremony

A video screen shot of Lt. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza addressing the crowd at the I Corps change of command ceremony at JBLM, Feb. 6.

If you have been living in a cave the last few days, a) you're probably in bad shape due to the cold weather and b) you might notice something different about Maj. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza.

First, Lanza has been promoted to lieutenant general.

Second, he's probably a little haggard from going through a change of command vortex.

Tuesday afternoon, Lanza transferred command of the 7th Infantry Division to Maj. Gen. Terry Ferrell during a ceremony at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. We were there.

Today, newly promoted Lt. Gen. Lanza was back at the podium, grabbing the I Corps command from Lt. Gen. Robert B. Brown during a ceremony at Lewis-McChord. We were also there, but we are still writing the story in longhand and developing film.

While you wait for our curriers to grab the story, below is video of today's I Corps change of command ceremony, courtesy of the fine folks at Lewis-McChord.

Video Friday: Field Report, Fort Lewis history, "No Sugar Tonight"...

It's Friday. And what a perfect Friday it is! The sun is shining, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord isn't shutdown due to snow (whimpy Fort Hood!).

But Friday is Friday, which means you all ready have one leg into Saturday. That stack of papers can wait. Let's watch some videos!

You're welcome.

Staff Sgt. Justin Kuhl has filed the latest Field Report, which includes the visit by former NFL players to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Sgt. Bryan Spradlin of the 5th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment created a Fort Lewis' Historic Gateway video focusing on the construction of the Camp Lewis gateway in 1918 and how it has survived as a piece of JBLM history to the present day.

On a more serious note, Sgt. Ashland Ferguson posted another video in the Duty to Intervene: Voices of the Victims series showing 7th Infantry Division soldiers intervening as a part of their duty to stop sexual assault, harassment or suicide.

Last, here's "No Sugar Tonight" starring a couple wacky kids. Enjoy.

Words & Photos: Steve Stefanowicz and Stephanie Anne Johnson in a tent

Steve Stefonwicz and Stephanie Anne Johnson perform AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" in a tent at The Hub in Gig Harbor. Photo credit: Pappi Swarner

It only took moments to lose a sense of context. Less than five minutes into Steve Stefanowicz's set last night at The Hub in Gig Harbor, any normal sense of time and place had already started to melt away. No, it wasn't because of too much Harmon beer - that surreal and otherworldly feel came from the sobering scope and scale of Stefanowicz's guitar performance, the fact the show was held outside in a tent and the packed crowd of 40- and 50-year-olds came to party. Oh, and Stephanie Anne Johnson joined in and belted it out as if it was her last performance.

Every element of the show fit, whether it was the 1,000 selfie shots I witnessed, the impromptu dance performances, people loosing their shit when Johnson sang "You Shook Me All Night Long," or standing in an elbow-to-elbow crowd near the stage to watch Stefanowicz channel Jimmy Page. It was a night of amazing classic rock covers.

It all lent for the kind of feel one would expect from a great New Year's Eve party.

The Hub has, indeed, pitched a tent on its side patio. With the ability to raise and lower side flaps, 10 tall heat lamps, a wood stove and chimeneas, donning short sleeve 12th Man jerseys works. Hub co-owner Pat Nagle says the all-ages tent will stay, even in the summer to provide shade. Since it only spans half the patio, and the side flaps can be removed, it will work. Expect regular outdoor concerts year-round at The Hub.

Johnson announced she, Stefanowicz and a few other friends would perform an hour before kickoff in the Stadium's beer garden at Sunday's Seahawks game. Consider the video below - which I shot while jarred multiple times - a preview for Sunday's performance.

This Date in History: 1991 - George H W Bush announces war against Iraq

"As I report to you, air attacks are underway against military targets in Iraq. We are determined to knock out Saddam Hussein's nuclear bomb potential. We will also destroy his chemical weapons facilities. Much of Saddam's artillery and tanks will be destroyed. Our operations are designed to best protect the lives of all the coalition forces by targeting Saddam's vast military arsenal. Afternoon pick-me-up: new C.F.A. video

What are you saying Reno Dave?

Here's a quick thing for you: Tacoma stonercore maniacs Cody Foster Army has a new video, and it involves a purple drummer Reno Dave mouthing something. The Ripple Music label trio says the "Built Up, Knocked Down" video was Cody Foster's concept; the band did all the filming and lighting; Killiam Lord edited it and the video was shot in the band's lair otherwise known as the "Bro-Op." That's all fine and dandy, but what the hell is Reno Dave saying? Judge for yourself:

Words and Video: Fight during The Hoot Hoots's Squeak and Squawk show

And the scene is set. Photo by Pappi Swarner

Oh sure you've got your Japanese artifacts and your epic dragon sculptures and your steampunk laser guns, and every single thing everywhere smells like some combination of grandpa and grandma. And sure there's your writhing dancing and improvised kitchen-sink costumes and thunder and lightning outside. And of course there is always, always an incredible line-up of regional indie bands. This is pretty much a given. Just another night at a Squeak and Squawk Music Festival all-ages show in the Library at Sanford and Son Antiques in downtown Tacoma.

Last night during day four of SQSQ, the above scenario was topped off by the glory of a shark vs. alligator fight during The Hoot Hoots's set - a Seattle power-pop band that combines fuzzy guitar, fuzzier keyboard lines, cheerfully crashing symbols and fun.

We captured the fight below. Bless you all.

Cody Foster Army gets small for new video

Cody Foster Army rocks with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Courtesy photo

Tacoma's favorite stonercore rock band is at it again. Cody Foster Army, also known as C.F.A., has just released its second music video in a series of four. "Sons of the Soil" is now available on The Ripple Effect's website as part of a worldwide release.

C.F.A. called in the troops for this one, with filming by Jack Saffle, better known for shooting pro skaters for the past 10 years. Saffle brought with him Addie Stonack and Jaynee Schmidtke to capture multiple perspectives, adjusting lighting and camera angles and hanging from the ceiling.

The effect is Cody Foster and bandmates - Dave Takata and "Reno" Dave Marseillan - portray little people on stage with crazy corpse paint and sweet dance moves.

Did CFA need a Kickstarter campaign to pull this off? Nope, just $13 and a few sore appendages.

A chat with Foster reveals he is still recovering (knee braces and all) from the filming of the video, which happened to coincide with his 40th birthday.

"I shit you not - I could not walk for two days," said Foster. "But, it was a lot of fun. We're always tongue-in-cheek, and it's working for us."

"Kick Rocks" was the band's first video and Foster says to expect live footage on their third release, including candid shots with friends at local bars.

P.S. Catch CFA live at Olympia Hempfest, Sunday Funday and Music and Art in Wright Park.
