Pat Nagle and Fred Roberson opened Tacoma's first craft microbreweries in 1997 in The Harmon Manufacturing Building, which was built in 1908 and became the largest furniture manufacturer in the West. Taking the building's name, Harmon Brewing Company set up shop in Tacoma's historic warehouse district. After a reorganization, Nagle and new partner, Carole Holder (now Carole Ford), subsequently opened sister restaurants The Hub, Harmon Tap Room and The Hub Gig Harbor, showing hometown pride with clever moniker beers such as Puget Sound Porter, Point Defiance IPA and Mount Takhoma Blonde. While most of the Harmon beers are brewed at the Tap Room, the original brewery remains, pumping out the brews specifically for the downtown Tacoma Harmon. Museum goers, college students and beer enthusiasts sip the small batch Harmon beers, on the original fir floors, including paired with weekend brunches - surrounded by historical Northwest ski memorabilia, sports on the tubes and always rockin' tunes. Keep an eye out for its Pray For Snow and Pray For Sun parties. They're a hoot.

Serving up five or so custom brews and always a few seasonal brews - from light lagers to stouts that eat like a meal - the Harmon also has an inexpensive food menu that covers everything from pizza and wings to a $5 steak and rib night on Tuesdays, and Sunday all-you-can-eat fish and chips. A full bar of liquor and wine selections round out the cocktail end of things.  The peanuts are free.
