The epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother, an officer in the Roman army. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption.
This admittedly impressive-looking version of the fictional biblical legend often plays like the next chapter of the Fast and Furious franchise rather than a serious period epic. Well-intentioned efforts to achieve moving, faith-based awakenings are undercut by casually violent action sequences. Instead of having the strength of its convictions, it comes across as a film hedging its bets. — Two stars
