Most sequels suck - especially comedies. I could list examples of sucky sequels till next Tuesday, but I have a word limit. Most sequels seem to fail because the writers/directors/producers are too gutless to stray from the central jokes of the first film. Case in point, last year's The Hangover Part 2, which was an insultingly lazy effort. Director Judd Apatow knows how to film a sequel. His sequel This is 40 takes the funniest supporting characters from Knocked Up (2007) and gives them their own vehicle. Paul Rudd and the hilarious Leslie Mann ("Your a doorman, doorman, doorman, doorman.") return to play couple Pete and Debbie - the only characters from Knocked Up I care to follow five years later.
