Visiting Mexico years ago, I fell in love with quick, tasty meals sold from street carts and taco trucks. Certainly not an authentic cuisine expert, I'm reminded greatly of that Mexican goodness at El Rinconsito, one of Tacoma's casual dining establishments. With 10 sister locations, the Pacific Northwest franchise proudly boasts (among other things) that no trans fatty oil is used.

El Rinconsito's setup is simple: view overhead menus like those found at fast-food restaurants, order at the counter, receive a number, hit the drink station complete with cinnamon-y horchata and Jarritos bottled soft drinks  and grab a seat. A smiling server delivers food and returns to check on you.

Gorditas (think stuffed pita pocket) come two to an order and have mild queso blanco that adds excellent flavor contrast to savory tender, simmered lengua (tongue) for $3.99. Fresh tomato, cilantro, onion, shredded iceberg lettuce, salsa and a cool cream sauce finish the light, yet filling, lunch. Carne asada is seasoned to enhance the natural meat flavor and served with fluffy rice, beans, tortillas, freshly made guacamole and side salad for $9.59.

El Rinconsito's opens daily at 11 a.m. for lunch and dinner and stays open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
