I'm, like, a Valley Girl on the "Angel Grove High" series

Look at me on the poster - well, kind of.

Walking into BramCo Entertainment studios, the brainchild of Isaac Cooper and David Bramwell, two friends from Olympia who have known each other since middle school, I was led to a room with a microphone, a pitcher of water, and a Mac computer.

Despite the minimal set up, the duo produces a successful parody series of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, with nods to late 80s and early '90s movies and shows like Weird Science and Clueless.

The series is called Angel Grove High (Angel Grove is where the Power Rangers lived), and it's blowing up on YouTube. One episode has more than 14,000 views. Comments on the episodes include, "This is the best new teen show ever!" and "Looks SO real and SO 90s. Great job!"

Cooper designs episodes using clips from upwards of 10 different TV shows or movies, creating a whole new, hilarious story line. He and Bramwell then write dialogue and voice-over each of the characters, creating a more-polished version of, say, Kung Fu movie-dubbed dialogue.

Many of the scenes play perfectly into the role Cooper has designed for each character. For instance, there is a scene in which Tommy from Power Rangers is inflicted with a stomach bug that causes him to eat everything in sight.  In this particular scene, Tommy is macking a ton of Twinkies, which is perfect for Angel Grove's Tommy, a stereotypical stoner.

Editing and directing isn't new to Cooper, who helped produce B-grade horror flicks like 300 Killers and Midnight Movie Madness. This is actually how I know Cooper, as I played a pregnant prostitute in 300 Killers. (It's actually pretty funny; I got to spit water in a cop's face.)

Now, he's asked for my help with the voice-over of Kimberly Hart, the main character in Angel Grove High and a total valley girl. Bramwell has been playing Kimberly, and his high-pitched impersonation is wearing on his vocal chords - and the audience's ears.

So, there we were, in the studio, and we got to totally, like, have super fun. We banged out the narrative part of the trailer, where Kimberly has nearly four minutes of dialogue, in five hours. It was a lot of work, as we re-did lines, rehearsed lines and recorded lines - with Cooper masterfully editing along the way.

The timing of the voices must line up with character's expression on the screen, and there was plenty of acting to go along. In one line, I say "That's it! You're getting your asses kicked!" And I put up my dukes, trying to channel as much Power Ranger as possible, while still keeping my bratty, valley girl voice. Talk about totally awesome.

While the new voice-over won't be available on YouTube as of press time, you should still check it out, and know that two local dudes are working hard to provide silly, solid entertainment.
