For the first time an airman has been selected as the Army Military Firefighter of the Year at the Department of the Army level competition. Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) firefighter Senior Airman Steven Soto recently won the Army-level Military Firefighter of the Year honors, and will now represent the Department of the Army and compete against the other services for the Department of Defense Military Firefighter of the Year honors later this year. The Tacoma Rainiers hosted Salute to Armed Forces Day Sunday, June 9 dedicating their game against the Las Vegas 51s to the brave men and women of Washington state's military. The team wore military-themed uniforms that were auctioned off live following the game, with proceeds benefiting the U.S.O. Northwest. The 1-38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team lifted hundreds of kids to the top of their Stryker. Local Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard threw out ceremonial pitches, as well as took the field during the National Anthem. And the 56th Army Band performed just inside the gate before the first pitch was thrown.

Duke University and U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball Coach Mike W. Krzyzewski spoke to senior noncommissioned and commissioned officers about key character traits developed within the teams he has led throughout his career May 9 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Krzyzewski's visit provided leadership at JBLM an insider's perspective of team building and the success which led to the achievement of four NCAA Championships, 11 Final Fours, 12 Atlantic Coast titles and 13 ACC championships. Engineers with the 22nd Engineer Clearance Company got their hands on the new High Mobility Engineer Excavator Type 1 during operator's training earlier this week. Well, it was a fact for Ida, Jocyln, Bobby and Teri, whose combined birthday represented 88 candles on the tower of cupcakes Saturday, March 30 at The Swiss. The Dockyard Derby Dames opened its seventh season Saturday, March 9 at the Pierce College Health Education Building. A packed house watched the Hellbound Homewreckers beat the Femme Fianna in the first bout and last year's champion Marauding Mollys beat the Trampires in the final bout. We snapped a few photos.

Wednesday, Feb. 27 inside Tacoma's King's Books, the fez wearing, secret handshaking and world domination task force known as The Cartoonists League of Absurd Washingtonians, or C.L.A.W., teamed up with the lovely, local cosplay group Super Sirens for "Real Life Comics."
