[ROCK] + FRI, JUNE 13

Friday night in Olympia is going to be crazy. It's a full moon, Friday the 13th and Evergreen State College graduation all rolled into one. It's a good thing this rock show is going to be at the 4th Ave Tav. The powerhouse bill will need the room to accommodate a ton of fans, plus all the randoms off the street overflowing into venues up and down the Ave. Anyway, I could choose to promote any of the bands on this bill, because I like them all quite a bit. But, I want to give props to Full Moon Radio, since they were the first of my loves out of this particular line-up: Their soft, edgy lyrics, their gigantic waves of punk-influenced fervor, the fact that all of them are women. Swoon. {NIKKI MCCOY}

FULL MOON RADIO, w/The Prophets of Addiction, Captain Algebra and Ravages of Time, 9 p.m., 4th Ave Tavern, 210 Fourth Ave., Olympia, $5, 360.786.1444

[INDIE ROCK] + SAT, JUNE 14

Sometimes it's hard to think of how to describe a group, other than by saying that they're a fucking solid rock group. Dude York is so adept at making ridiculously catchy, wiry indie rock that it's enough to make one tongue-tied. The heavy pop of Dude York has remained steady in quality since their formation in 2011. Now that the revolving door of bassists has settled on Claire England (formerly of the Brite Futures, AKA Natalie Portman's Shaved Head) Dude York has settled into a groove that allows them to explore areas beyond the punk and New Wave leanings of their earlier music. On their most recent LP, Dehumanize, Dude York dip their toes into supercharged R&B, leaving everything as muscular and straightforward, but bringing in a welcome swagger. {REV. ADAM MCKINNEY}

DUDE YORK, w/ So Pitted, FF, Trees and Timber, 8 p.m., Bob's Java Jive, 2102 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma, $5, 253.475.9843

[HIP-HOP] + SAT, JUNE 14

Lena May, founder of The NW Hip Hop website and #iBelieveInHipHop, celebrates her birthday at Sampan Saturday night. The celebration will also act as a benefit to raise money for her medical costs. Open to the public, May's party will feature musical performers Miz, Zikki, Ill Defined and others, as well as freestyle frontrunners SOS & Heretic The Heathen (who heads up For MCs By MCs) and San Diego to Olympia transplant DJ Kid One, who's fresh from vacay. Hip-hop, birthdays and summer make for a sweet triple threat. {JOSE S. GUTIERREZ}

LENA MAY'S BIRTHDAY BASH, 8 p.m., Sampan Restaurant & Grill, 922 Hensley St., Olympia, $5, 360.456.8020

[NEO-PSYCHEDELIA] + TUES, JUNE 17

If I asked you to guess what type of music The Electric Magpie make, no points for saying "neo-psychedelia." Still, The Electric Magpie go a bit of a way in terms of exploring the less explored corners of those '60s nuggets. Dashes of Canned Heat peak out from underneath the layers of Zombies, Turtles and Kinks. Pastoral folk-rock trades blows with heavy blues, and the trilling organs are there the whole way, planting squiggly ear worms in the listener. The Electric Magpie are signed to the Lolipop Records label, a California hub of psych-rock revivalists. Northern will be host to a showcase of fellow Lolipop Records labelmates, including the far-out haze of Mystic Braves, the moody stomp of Corners, and the shoegaze-leaning fuzz of Burning Palms. {REV. AM}

THE ELECTRIC MAGPIE, w/ Mystic Braves, Corners, Burning Palms, 7 p.m., Northern, 414 1/2 Fourth Ave., Olympia, $7
