Home of Kurt Cobain and grunge rock, K Records, The Evergreen State College, and the best crappy beer you can get, Olympia is the perfect place to fill the musical void in your life. With a constant forecast of rain, an abundance of hairy armpits and the freshest green, creative minds flourish in this little town. Somehow this unique combination produces one of the best underground music scenes you can find. On Feb. 17, 2011 the Weekly Volcano's Best of Olympia 2011 will certainly include Oly's music scene - not only revealing the best bands, clubs, labels and such, but also in the issue's overall design. We're going to rock it like it's 1992!

Olympia is also much more than just music.  The Weekly Volcano spent the past 12 months dining, drinking, sneaking around the Capitol Campus, and shopping our way across Thurston County - yes Lacey, Tumwater and outlining towns are part of the special issue, too. And now that we're finished, we're ready to connect you with the places and people that stand as the absolute Best of Olympia.

Go to bestofolympia2011.com right now to cast your vote. You could win a $200 gift card to the Ramblin Restaurant Group and a free night's stay in a Phoenix Inn suite just for voting. Voting ends Jan. 31.

Olympia is neither the home of Kurt Cobain (that would be Aberdeen) or the best crappy beer you can get (unless they are referring to Fishtale, because Olympia Beer is brewed in Milwaukee).

Approaching Aberdeen just off Highway 12 is a sign to your right that says, "Welcome to Aberdeen -- Come As You Are," a tribute to their native son Kurt Cobain.

I think everyone knows Cobain was from Aberdeen. I think most people also know he spent considerable, and influential, time in Oly. Certainly not trying to steal Kurt from Aberdeen, though ... That would be low. What else do they have?

There's some info on Cobain's time in Oly here:

Olympia beer is brewed at many locations including the Lonestar Brewery in Austin, TX and the Henry Weinhard brewery in Portland, OR.

Olympia beer WAS brewed here for years, us locals were all sad to see Olympia Brewery be bought out several times and named something else...mostly we were sad to see the brewery close all together since we lost over 500 jobs in the community and no longer have the brewery whistle to guide our day, the infamous clock, and the smell of beer brewing. It's still OUR beer. And, yes, we ALL know Kurt was from Aberdeen and those of us who grew up during that time also know and remember him spending a considerable amount of time here.
