Church or awesome garage rock? These are the types of dilemmas presented to you when Tacoma's Gold Teeth (now with seven members!) slithers out of the depths and decides to plug in for a rare matinee show at Top of Tacoma. OK, sure - technically you could probably attend a reasonably scheduled Sunday service and still make it to Top of Tacoma for Gold Teeth's first Rainier beer tuned, three chord, fist-pumper - but that blows the whole premise of this intro. Plus, if you're down with Gold Teeth, Sunday service probably isn't too high on your priority list. Just sayin.

I caught up with Chris Trashcan of Gold Teeth earlier this week to get his take on the state of the band, its new, beefier lineup, and the possibility of the band releasing a 7-inch sometime soon.

WEEKLY VOLCANO: Two shows in one month. Wow. Is that a recent record? How and when do you guys decide to come out of hiding? What pushes you out of the garage?

CHRIS TRASHCAN: Two shows in one month - AND we're playing in July again at The New Frontier with some old pals from San Francisco coming into town, The Meat Sluts. Songs about meat.  What's not fun about that?

There's really no set "thing" that gets us together, other than wanting to fart around and hang out and play.  We hole up in our secret clubhouse a few times - then talk turns to playing a show.  It's all about fun, but without making a big to-do about the whole thing.

VOLCANO: If Gold Teeth was a beer, what would it be?

TRASHCAN: A cold Rainier - the old standby.  We're not reinventing anything here, after all.

VOLCANO: Are you worried about translating during a rare, Sunday matinee show? Is this going to interfere with your usual church plans?

TRASHCAN: Our rule of "No Rocking before Rock O' Clock" has only been stifled by our friends at The Top of Tacoma.  We can break tradition for good pals.  Gold Teeth <hearts> Top of Tacoma and so should you.  We're playing with Mico de Noche, starts at 6 or 6:30 p.m.

VOLCANO: What's the state of the band at this moment? Obviously, everyone involved has plenty of other ventures. What keeps it together?

TRASHCAN: The state of the band is Washington.  We started a band based on having no aspirations or expectations.  If there is nothing expected, or no worries about falling short of a goal, all you have to do is enjoy the fun part.  That's why we added two more pals to the mix.  If five people playing is fun, seven must be a totally out of control great time ... and it is.  We'll just keep on doing our Gold Teeth thing while everyone else worries about the politics of bands, shows, and blahblahblah's.  None of that for us, thanks.

VOLCANO: Speaking of that, and for the record, who is playing with you guys right now? Has your brother joined the fold, or am I just getting confused?

TRASHCAN: Yeah, my brother has joined the fold.  They gave me the microphone, Bob the drums, Stu, Takata and Jason on guitars, Sean the bass, and Fuzz on percussion and vocals.  That's seven Teeth - the best incarnation yet. It's a total feedback-laden trainwreck of a good time.

VOLCANO: Anything else we should know?

TRASHCAN: Just working on some covers for a MAYBE all-cover show idea we had.  We're also trying to get the Gold Teeth Revue going with a three-piece horn section, and I'm being totally serious.  We just want to have a big party when we play - for us and whoever's in attendance.  We also might release a 7-inch soon, but we're not taking bets on it yet.  Like most Gold Teeth related issues, if it happens, it happens.  We're not musicians, we're entertainers.
