Major heat is dropping right now. Artists know they only have a few weeks left to make their mark in 2011. So there are still plenty of quality projects being released.

For example, go to djsemaj.bandcamp.com and download DJ Semaj's new LP, Painting Jimmy.  There are video accompaniments on YouTube - directed by Blakmic - that are as equally artistic and thoughtful as Semaj's music. The album is a 16-track, mostly instrumental journey.  The music is laidback, funky, jazzy, soulful and a bit tripped-out. DJ Semaj is one of the most talented producers in the area and has worked with everyone who is mentionable in the South Sound. It's cool to see him sticking mostly solo on this go ‘round, and letting listeners focus on the magic that is his beat production. The artwork, concept and photography that accompany this project are stylish. It's a well-polished piece of work.

Second Family, who had a huge year in 2011, recently dropped a new single, "99". It's on YouTube. At the moment, Second Family might be the most respected name in Tacoma hip-hop, and releasing this single ensures they finish the year strong. It's their version of party music; the title refers to partying like its 1999. The single is not necessarily a dance track, though. It's still got the hardcore edge that we all love from Second Family.

I guess all the major artists are laying it on heavy right now. Havi Blaze, one of the best lyricists from Tacoma at the moment, recently released a new single, "I'm On It". YouTube it, although brace yourself for the visual that comes with the song. Ha! It's nothing ya want to see right after ya eat. The song is a little more fun and upbeat than Havi's usual thoughtful, cerebral songs. It's still wordy though, with enough wordplay to keep the truest of heads listening.

Also, A R Mastermind released his project, Jack N Coke, available on datpiff.com. It's got appearances from the Gonzo Family, Blue Nose Music, C-Logic, a host of others, and even me.  It's a step up for Mastermind, who is improving with every new release.
