WHAT'S THE WORD: That’s a wrap

That's it. 2011 is a wrap. It was definitely the strongest year for Tacoma hip-hop ever. Local artists continue to improve and make strides.

I'm not going to give ya a formal 2011 "best" list or anything, but the big news in 2011 surely includes: the emergence of the Gonzo Family and Blue Nose Music; the grind of Tak Patron; the national success of Sonny Bonoho; CityHall making strides in the Seattle scene; Havi Blaze becoming a statewide respected lyricist; John Crown; Bruce Leroy; the dopeness that is Leezy Soprano and Second Family; and there's so much more.

And that's just what my blunted-mind came-up with right now.

Looking for ways to celebrate New Year's Eve? Here are some suggestions.

$krilla, one of the best party-throwers/planners/promoters in town, is throwing a New Year's Eve show at Krickets in Spanaway with the Gonzo Family, Blue Nose Music and hosted by Tak Patron. I can personally attest that $krilla consistently throws good New Year's Eve shows. He has the performances wrap up by 11 p.m. or so - so everyone can dance and celebrate by midnight.

Also on Saturday, the BreakLites will perform at Top of Tacoma Bar & Cafe -- a triumphant return home show from a tour the group is currently on. The BreakLites have really had a breakout year. It looks like the rest of the country is recognizing the live talent and instrumentation this crew brings. I'm positive the BreakLites will make sure ya had a good time if ya choose to bring in the New Year with them.

On another note, if you're the revolutionary type who likes to brave the elements, there will be hip-hop and other live music down at the Occupy Tacoma camp on New Year's Eve. The Occupiers in Tacoma are bearing in for the winter, and have no plans to leave. They've outlasted Occupiers in New York, Seattle and many other cities. This is the second Occupy Tacoma has hosted with Hip-Hop Occupies, which is a national group using hip-hop culture to infuse the Occupy movement with renewed energy. I'm throwing down there myself. It will be a fun, celebratory, yet cold night.

And before 2010 passes, remind yourself of one of the more fun releases of this year: Google Logics, Spaceman and Fice's "Mayor's Remix".

Ya'll (Gonzo Music) did have a big year, infusing the WA scene w/ live-energy. W/ the addition of Krisis to ya crew, perhaps/hopefully, the name Gonzo Music will be as well known throughout the State as it is in the 253.
