Q-Dot might be the mayor of 253 hip-hop. His name rings bells in Seattle. He often has good quality shows up north. In Tacoma, he teaches a hip-hop class at the Tacoma Public Library. He plans Grit City. He is often the go-to guy when an organization or event needs hip-hop. He really puts it down for our area. He just released a new video titled "Electricity," which features Gavin Milloy. It's classic Q-Dot. The video has Q flowing in front of the T-Town night skyline. He begins by shouting out the area's hoods, then goes on to name-check and show props to local hip-hop legends like General Wojack and Seattle's Silver Shadow D. Gavin sings the hook, it's an R&B smooth, melodic chorus. Q-Dot stays in his grown-man slick-guy vibe for the rest of the song. It's vintage Q-Dot, as he's being uplifting and the song is soft and pretty. Dot's rocking his normal sweater and hat combo. To end the song, Q-Dot shows us why so many think he is full of talent, as he ends the song on a beautiful keyboard solo. The video is directed by Brian Tolliver, who is one of the more well-respected videographers around. It is a song that highlights Q-Dot's raps and his musicality.

As an artist, Q-Dot could be the biggest thing in the 253 area. He has already laid the groundwork and framework to take his act to the next level. This song was just a little too much of more of the same though. It could have been a Q-Dot song from '09 and it would not have sounded any different. Q has his fans and myself at his fingertips. We are waiting for more, not so much more of the same though. We know he can rap great, we know he can sing, he can produce, he can play instruments, he can organize events, he can do it all. So surprise me next time, Q. I have seen ya do your thing with nice harmonious hooks and soothing piano playing. Let me see some new energy. Not a whole new direction - because we love to see ya do what ya do. But next time, I would be interested in seeing a different side of Q-Dot.
