Jerry Miller, one of the founding members of Moby Grape and number 68 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, will be at Ted Brown Music in Tacoma on Friday, April 11, to share music, advice and anecdotes.

"Moby Grape had a huge influence on their music scene," said Anthony Myers, marketing director at Ted Brown Music. "They were the Mudhoney of their day; they got famous, but paved the way for some great bands ... And Jerry Miller is an awesome guy. He's shared the stage with so many people, and he'll just drop these great stories."

Miller is just one of many musicians to host clinics at Ted Brown Music. John Jorgenson, Brad Davis and percussionists from Santana are just a few of the guests.

"It's an intimate setting with great sound and a great vibe," Myers said. "It's more of a community event more than anything else. People can meet them after the clinics - it's not like a club setting - it's a way where people can shake hands and get a picture, where people can talk to them."

The week prior, on April 4, the legendary Lee Oskar will host a clinic at the same location, bringing his line of harmonicas as well as tips and advice for learning different styles of harmonica playing.

Oskar founded the band WAR with Eric Burden. His harmonica can be heard on classics like "Low Rider," "The Cisco Kid," and others. Most recently, his playing was sampled on the pop song "Timber" by Pitbull and Ke$ha. Oskar is known for his improvisational skill on the harmonica and animated stage presence.

In a phone conversation with Oskar, he said he plans to explain harmonica playing in conjunction with guitarists, ukulele players and others who want to bring in more sound without necessarily bringing in another band member.

"It will really enhance the music they are playing once they know how to use them," he said.

Oskar will bring a guitarist along to demonstrate what he will be explaining. He will also autograph harmonicas and will raffle off one of his products during the clinic.

Lee Oskar's clinic starts at 6 p.m. Friday, April 4. Admission is free. Jerry Miller's clinic is on the following Friday, April 11, at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 and can be purchased at Ted Brown Music on Tacoma Mall Boulevard or at tedbrownmusic.com.
