In the media frenzy generated by the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death, there is plenty of talk about Nirvana, Seattle and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Huffington Post, Seattle Times and CNN mention Cobain's early home of Aberdeen, Wash. or report on the details of his suicide. But none of these articles mention Olympia, where Kurt smashed guitars, dabbled in depression and wrote the album that proved to be a pivotal point in his career.

But for those of us who grew up here, some of our peers knowing Cobain well, we recognize Olympia's role in the grunge-king's lifeline. Cobain shared an apartment in Olympia from 1987 until the release of Nevermind in 1991. The band played live shows in Olympia. Kurt hung out at the Spar Café. His influence is seen in art, music and creativity in Olympia today. Even Generation Y kids and college-student transplants can grasp Cobain's impact through their own experience of that first-listen to "Teen Spirit," or hearing stories of Cobain's favorite food being the mac and cheese at King Solomon's Reef.

While this article - in its heart - is about a man and his music, it's also about a group of people that have come together to make a documentary about Kurt Cobain and Olympia titled 20 A.C. And how, being moved by the process, they felt compelled to throw a tribute show in his honor.

Friday, April 25, the opening night of the Olympia Spring Arts Walk, and 20 days after Cobain's death date, Olympia Film Collective (OFC) presents Remembering Kurt & Nirvana, a concert with live music by Olympia bands Mosquito Hawk, The Hard Way, Under Sin (with original Nirvana drummer Aaron Burckhard), Full Moon Radio and Gebular. Each band will play Nirvana cover songs as well as its own original music.

"The whole concert idea began when we were in the middle of (20 A.C.)," explained Russell Brooks, producer. "The question came to mind if there was anything in the works for a Nirvana tribute concert, so we reached out to musicians. When we found nothing was happening, we felt an importance, and an obligation, to provide an event where it's most appropriate - in Olympia."

And so, the documentary and the concert began to merge. Musicians became interviewees as insight to how Cobain's music has affected them, even 20 years later.

"Kurt and Nirvana's influence is certainly alive in the music community," said Brooks. "At the same time, there is a new generation of musicians. ... There is no question that the same vibe and same culture that influenced Kurt when things really hit a sweet spot is alive today. Along with that, there are current bands that are playing that will have the same impact. Every band that is part of the show has been heavily influenced by Nirvana. Jerry Zeigler (Mosquito Hawk) had known Kurt. There's Aaron Burckhard, Nirvana's original drummer. Full Moon Radio (all females) was influenced, and at the same time Kurt spoke of women picking up guitars and starting bands and hoping that "In Utero" would influence in that way. Gebular is heavily influenced and played Kurt Cobain Day in Aberdeen, and Scott Taylor (The Hard Way) lives in Kurt's old apartment."

OFC will be filming the concert for additional footage for 20 A.C. and expects to release the film this summer.
