When the Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities (TACID) was founded over three decades ago, the intent was to represent area residents who were dealing with disabilities to include multiple sclerosis, deaf and hard of hearing, blind and low vision and mental health. Since the TACID Center opened its doors in 1984, it has made a noticeable impact on the lives of such individuals by offering peer support, advocacy and self-sufficiency programs, among other things.

"We serve between 3,500 to 4,000 people annually, from peer support groups to individual coaching and workshops," explained TACID Center executive director Ken Gibson. "I've been told by people that TACID saved their life and that's amazing. It's why we do what we do."

Gibson, who has been with TACID for three years, has strived to increase the ways people can give back and not just monetarily.

"We average 20,000 hours of volunteer time per year now," he said. "Even our front desk is staffed by volunteers who want to give back and help others through TACID."

Currently, there are volunteerism opportunities for tutoring in math or English, as many TACID members are working on getting their GEDs or moving onto community college. There is also a need, for professionals who can assist with resume writing.

While TACID does not primarily focus on physical donations, there is a small essential needs bank on site for people who might be struggling.

"People can get backed into a corner and run out of money, especially around the holidays, so we try to keep some supplies on hand," Gibson said.

Items in demand include toiletries like soaps and shampoos, either regular or travel sized, though all products should be unscented. These donations are welcome year-round.

TACID also assists individuals with disabilities who require assistance with pursuing education and finding gainful employment. As part of that, donations of gently used, interview appropriate clothing are also appreciated.

However, as with any charitable organizations, the bottom line can always be improved and cash donations, which can be made via the website, allows TACID to reach and support even more individuals.

"It costs over $1,000 to run TACID every day, so monetary donations are also invaluable to the operation," Gibson reminded.

All donations can be dropped off at the TACID front desk during regular business hours, which are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Friday, and then 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The offices are only open for scheduled activities Saturday. TACID is at 6315 South 19th St. in Tacoma. The offices will be closed for the holidays between Dec. 22 and Jan. 1.
