Getting back to nature on a camping adventure doesn't have to be all about bugs, smelly old sleeping bags, wonky tents and soggy bland eats. There's a new camping choice in town (and throughout the world!) that takes the "rough" out of "roughing it," and boy, does it mean it!

Welcome to "glamping," the new, modern take on camping with a glamorous twist. Glamping, simply put, is a more glamorous and comfortable way to enjoy the great outdoors without all of the pitfalls that come with traditional camping. Instead of the two-man pup tent where one sleeps on the ground, tents, yurts or treehouses come in the luxury model. Accommodations can include super stylish and comfortable sleeping arrangements, complete with fresh linens and fluffy pillows (and some tents may even boast electricity for added convenience). Camping "equipment" is high end, and in some cases, other recreational equipment and activities are at the ready (such as touring bicycles or hiking gear). Some "glampgrounds" even bring in gourmet food treats for guests (including the traditional marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolates for s'mores by the campfire).

While glamping is most likely more expensive than the traditional camping experience, it costs less than going on standard vacations that may include hotel, restaurant and other event fees. Glamping is also a great way to get a quiet, romantic getaway for couples who want to experience natural beauty, peace and quiet without having to do a lot of work, preparation or planning.

And glamping is not going away anytime soon. It's not only a phenomenon in the United States, but it extends itself to the international arena.

Lucky for us, there are glampgrounds right here in our own backyard. Here are a few nearby options to check out and explore.
