When you think of Oktoberfest, your mind might immediately wander to the lively streets of Munich, where thousands of revelers gather annually to celebrate Bavarian culture with beer, bratwurst, and traditional music. However, you don't need a passport to experience the joy of Oktoberfest; Washington state offers its own unique take on this beloved German tradition. We've compiled a list of some vibrant Oktoberfest celebrations that take place in various cities across Washington, bringing a taste of Bavaria to the Pacific Northwest.
Leavenworth: The Bavarian wonderland
Tucked away in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, the charming town of Leavenworth transforms itself into a Bavarian wonderland each fall. Leavenworth's Oktoberfest, which will run this year on the weekends of Sept. 29-30, Oct. 6-7 and Oct. 13-14 is one of the largest and most authentic celebrations on the West Coast. The entire town gets involved, with businesses decorating in Bavarian style and locals donning traditional clothing.
The main attraction, however, is the beer. Leavenworth boasts several beer gardens featuring a wide array of German and local brews. You can sip on classic German lagers and ales while listening to live oompah bands and indulging in German cuisine like sausages, schnitzel, and pretzels. The lively atmosphere and picturesque mountain backdrop make Leavenworth's Oktoberfest a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic Bavarian experience in Washington.
Seattle: An urban take on Oktoberfest
For those who prefer an urban setting, Fremont in Seattle offers its own unique Oktoberfest celebration. The celebration this year will take place Sept. 22, 23 and 24. While not as traditional as Leavenworth's festivities, Seattle's Oktoberfest still boasts 100+ beers and ciders. Plus traditional Bavarian fare like pretzels, brats and more!
Tacoma: Something a little different
For something a little different than your traditional Oktoberfest celebration, McMenamins Elks Temple will be hosting their 4th annual Rocktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 14. Live music will kick off at 1 p.m.
