One of the hardest things about moving often is that you have to start over in a new community. You have to make new friends, find a new hair-dresser, and in many cases for military spouses, rebuild your business from the ground up. One Joint Base Lewis-McChord's most beloved cosmetologists speaks up about how to run a successful business, and how important it is to nurture and support the Military Spouse community.

"I love the idea of being able to give to someone and help someone -- it's less about hair and beauty, but being a good person in the community. I can give freely to anyone and make someone's day just like that. I see people down or struggling -- and I can change the way their day is going automatically."

Darcy King arrived at JBLM with her soldier, two kids, and two dogs 15 months ago from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where she built her salon business through social media marketing, referrals, and a lot of hard work. After three years, she found herself with a list of clients who became close friends. For Darcy, the hardest part of making the move to Washington state wasn't having to start over, it was having to say good-bye.

"My biggest struggle is by the time I leave a duty station I have all my favorite clients ... we have a bond like a family. It's like having a savings account that you are constantly investing in. My clients are my savings account. I'm investing so much and then all of a sudden, my savings account is gone and I have to start over. I have nothing, no foundation ... and I have to go through this every three years," Darcy said.

Like many of us, she puts a lot of time and effort into these relationships, and over time it's she who finds out first about pregnancies and other big news. Darcy genuinely enjoys and cares for the people she works with, as there is not one artificial quality about her. She always welcomes you with a hug and lives for girl talk. Her bubbly personality and happy demeanor make you feel like you have been best friends since kindergarten.

Darcy began her journey in cosmetology while being stationed in Colorado Springs in 2010. She spent her high school years in a gifted art program, so it's no surprise that she sought out a creative career that would be flexible enough to raise a family and move often. After a lot of online research, she decided on cosmetology at the Paul Mitchell School.

"I stumbled upon Paul Mitchell and fell in love with the whole sales pitch; no animal testing, and constantly giving back to the community. Going to the Paul Mitchell School taught me to volunteer more than I have ever volunteered in my life. It was immediately where I knew I needed to be," explained Darcy.

After two years and 1,800 hours, she was off.  Darcy now offers services in hair styling, cuts and color, makeup, nails, skin treatments and eyelashes. To make an appointment with Darcy go to styleseat.com.
