There is nothing like a nail-biter of a football game that binds Joint Base Lewis-McChord to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

At the Oct. 14 Army vs. Eastern Michigan University game at Michie Stadium, the 7th Infantry Division was honored by the academy.

The stadium is dedicated to the memory of Dennis Michie, who was instrumental in starting the football program while a cadet.  

A member of the Class of 1892, Michie organized, managed and coached the first football team at West Point in 1890.

As is tradition, the Army team honored the 7th ID by wearing the division's iconic "hourglass" insignia on the back of their helmets.

The Black Knights defeated the Eagles 28 to 27 on a last second two-point conversion.

Maj. Gen. Willard Burleson, commanding general, 7th ID, JBLM, attended the game.

After the game, Burleson visited the Army's locker room to meet with Cadets Wunmi Oyetuga and Donnell Diego.

Both cadets are from Lakewood, and both attended Charles Wright Academy and Curtis High School respectively.

"It's always great to come back and visit West Point," Burleson said.  

"Especially seeing these two cadets from Lakewood."
