It's a new week, which means it's time for a new installment of Bobble Tiki's South Sound music news and notes column. Without further ado, let's get rolling. ...

Please excuse Bobble Tiki. He's got an extreme Hall & Oates hangover going this morning. Normally, Bobble Tiki pumps out his columns on Wednesday nights, frantically emailing them to editor Matt Driscoll moments before deadline. Trust Bobble Tiki, Driscoll loves this.

But, this week, Bobble Tiki was excused from work Wednesday night for the biggest concert event of the year (at least in Bobble Tiki's humble opinion): Hall & Oates at the Puyallup Fair! There was work to be done (in the form of a column to write), but Bobble Tiki said the hell with it and went with his gut - which led him straight to P-Town.

That's right. Last night Bobble Tiki rocked out (relatively speaking) with your mom and dad to 10 or so classic Hall & Oates tunes - the legends of hair and harmony taking to the same stage that saw Bret Michaels earlier during this year's fair run, and will see Kid Rock Sunday. Hall & Oates kept it short, sweet, and very '80s. Bobble Tiki was with his people.

This morning, however, the cold reality of the situation kicked in. Bobble Tiki had way too many Krusty Pups warming up for Daryl and John, and now he's feeling it; plus, there's a column that still needs written. The drivel you're reading is a result of both factors.

What's not drivel is the music heading to the Den @ urbanXchange Friday, when the Sumner Brothers along with Run From Cover hit town with a whole satchel full of folk, roots, Americana, banjo and boot wearin' gems.

Coming from British Columbia with a look that screams hipster-logger-type, the Sumner Brothers - while mostly unknown outside of tight knit folk scenes and faded denim conventions - long ago established a name for themselves, based almost solely on the intimacy and weight of their homespun and emotional music. They don't pull any punches, and they don't fake any feelings - the Sumner Brothers, in the tradition of the genre they've made home - simply bring things back to basics, with an honesty that's hard to find anywhere - and is always refreshing and captivating when stumbled upon. Banjos, harmonicas, steel guitar, loss, pain and regret - all play their part in the Sumner Brothers game, a sound almost always described in print as "unpolished and raw." With brotherly voices colliding and intercepting in lo-fi beauty, Brian Sumner's shaking baritone and Bob's often pain-filled tenor, here's a band, while uncomfortably intimate at times, that it's hard to take your ears or eyes off of.

Catch the Sumner Brothers Friday at the Den, if you know what's best for you.

Right now, Bobble Tiki's going to go take a Hall & Oates soundtracked nap, because he' knows what's best for him.
