It's a new week, which means it's time for a new installment of Bobble Tiki's South Sound music news and notes column. Without further ado, let's get rolling ...

First and foremost, let it be known that Bobble Tiki never actually EARNS his keep or his paycheck here at the Weekly Volcano. Truck drivers EARN their paychecks. Bartenders EARN their paychecks. Forklift drivers EARN their paychecks.

Bobble Tiki just shows up, closes his door, pounds out some incoherent verbiage on the keyboard, takes a long lunch, and then calls it a day. It's a pretty sweet gig.

That said, there are weeks - sometimes whole months - when Bobble Tiki does have to work a little harder, and dig a little deeper, to fill his obligatory column space. Sometimes, like, oh, say, Christmas time, there's not much going on around town - and these are the times when Bobble Tiki has to get creative and put a little elbow grease into his weekly routine.

As you may have gathered, so is the case this week. It's a slow one out there, and nearly every musical event happening around Tacoma an Olympia has already found its way into the Volcano - in one way or another.

Well, except at least one ... a timeless, weekly classic (and stellar combination) Bobble Tiki has been meaning to shout from the rooftops for some time.

Ladies and gentleman, rock fans of all tolerances and gastro-preferences, if you haven't all ready, please take a moment to direct your attention to Uncle Sam's Bar and Grill in Spanaway, were the legendary Jerry Miller takes the stage EVERY Thursday ... as part of Uncle Sam's Taco Thursday, no less!

That's right. Tacos. Guitarist Jerry Miller (famous for his work with Moby Grape, among other sizeable accomplishments). And the charm of Spanaway. You really can't go wrong ...

For the wee ones out there (and by "wee ones" Bobble Tiki means any reader without thinning hair and or a recent mid-life crisis), Jerry Miller really, truly is legendary. One gander at the man's lengthy resume can tell you that. A T-Town original (born her in 1943), and a founding member of Moby Grape (see: San Francisco music scene in the ‘60s, and one of the most influential bands to emerge from it), Miller has made a name with his top-notch guitaring, songwriting, and singing. Rolling Stone named Miller the 68 greatest guitar player off all time, and Clapton (who Miller has played and recorded with, along with other HUGE names like Hendrix and Page) once called Miller the best guitarist in the world

Talk about a compliment.

Even more noteworthy, talk about a prime opportunity to have every Thursday in Spanaway... Derek and the Dominos long ago stopped their weekly gig at Kamel Toe Bar and Grill, but Jerry Miller still plugs in every week at Uncle Sam's for Taco Thursday.

While Miller hasn't released a new record in over ten years - he's continued to write songs, and he's as good as the day he came of age in the music business. Some of these songs you'll no doubt have a chance to see at Uncle Sam's in Spanaway every Thursday, an opportunity that (in case you haven't noticed) Bobble Tiki highly recommends.

See you next week, and happy holidays!

I've played drums behind Jerry since '86. Just to let fans of Jerry know, this gig at Uncle Sam's is not always Jerry's best. Craig, the owner, in trying to help out Jerry's financial situation pays Jerry but not the band, besides tacos and drinks. The musicians backing Jerry are sometimes not up to the musicianship one would expect from such a legend. I have been doing this for too long, with too many greats, to work for free. More power to Craig to get free musicians, but don't expect the best of Jerry Miller.
