Bobble Tiki is an island themed souvenir of many skills and talents. For instance, no one at Weekly Volcano World Headquarters can balance more quarters on their chin than Bobble Tiki. Also, Bobble Tiki is a two-time champion pocket-pool player - having honed his skills throughout adolescents at a stifling all boys, all Tiki school.
But as unique as Bobble Tiki is, he still has plenty of qualities in common with plenty of people and plenty of things. Again, for example, Bobble Tiki shares an amazing likeness to Don Cheadle (or at least he likes to think he does). Bobble Tiki is also one of at least seven other people that buy up all the "Yosemite Road" wine he likes so much at 7-Eleven.
Believe it or not, Bobble Tiki even shares a few things in common with Tacoma band Bodybox, who will celebrate the release of a CD this week - Saturday night at the 4th Avenue Tavern in Olympia with the Dave Hannon Band and Elbow Coulee. The band also has a Tacoma CD release party scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22 at The New Frontier.
What does Bobble Tiki have in common with Bodybox, you may ask?
Well, Bobble Tiki will get to that. Let's start with the things Bodybox and Bobble Tiki DON'T have in common.
For starters, and most obvious, Bodybox is a three-piece rock band from T-Town made up of singer and guitarist Kurt Lindsay, drummer Belal Anwar and bassist Kevin De Flitch. As you well know, Bobble Tiki is simply an island themed souvenir with a drinking problem and a job in journalism he probably doesn't deserve.
Secondly, Bodybox obviously has motivation and drive: a band for only a year and a half, Saturday's show will celebrate the release of a full length CD - 11 whole songs! Bobble Tiki is totally lacking in the motivation and drive department. Bobble Tiki probably hasn't written 11 decent sentences in the last decade, and he sure as hell hasn't been too concerned with sharpening his craft. Hell, not when The Biggest Loser is on!
Lastly, Bodybox has friends - friends they hope will fill the 4th Ave Tav and New Frontier for the upcoming CD release shows. "These two shows are meant to be the biggest in our history as a band, and we would highly appreciate it if you would let anyone know that you would think might be interested," the band writes on Reverbnation. "We want everybody there who's either been to a show before, or is interested in what we are trying to accomplish."
Bobble Tiki, on the other hand, has no friends ... almost practically zero. But, hell, who has time for friends when The Biggest Loser is on!?!
So, what DO Bobble Tiki and Bodybox have in common?
It's all in the personalities - in that both Bodybox and Bobble Tiki seem to have more than one. A mix of funk, folk, bass-driven soul/hip-hop and alternative rock, a Bodybox song (or performance, Bobble Tiki assumes) could go any direction at any time. While none of the band's work comes off like a reinvention of the wheel, and all is comfortingly familiar, Bodybox definitely has a bevy of personalities to draw from - and they pull from them all with skill and obvious care.
The same can certainly be said about Bobble Tiki (aside from all the musical stuff). Bobble Tiki is basically the Weekly Volcano's resident Sybil. For example, since lunch Bobble Tiki has been - at the very least - Mike Dorsett, Marjorie Dorsett, Peggy Lou Baldwin and definitely The Blonde.
But that's enough about Bobble Tiki.

There are a couple things you forgot to mention. Having been around this band long before it had two members added to it, I know a couple of insider details. This band isn't a group of boys looking to get to the top and get laid for a living. Not to say, ofcourse, they'd mind such a life. But, these boys, they're different. I've been to more shows than i can count on a classroom of fingers and toes and I've interacted with a lot of musicians for the last seven years of my life. I've never in my life been able to witness drive from, and only from, the heart. These boys give up sleep, going out and partying all the time, and being young because all they want in life is to reach out to people and make a difference. The lyrics, the melodies, the time, is all sweat and love put in to really positively affecting the people around them. And if the words don't touch you in some way, then their story should. There are people in the world who dream and dream, and then there are few who live it. These boys are living. Come be inspired by that. If not for them, then for you.
I hope to see everyone that knows about this band at the next show.

it is great to watch and listen to these guys. like when kurt would play almost every friday night at the now infamous mocha moo honing his craft. many friday evenings were spent there, it was his second home. and kevin was into filmaking and documenting the the music scene in the greater seattle tacoma area and the scene at the moo. after the mocha moo closed, kevin on bass joined kurt to form a band and then belal joined and bodybox was born. i attend many of their shows and its a treat to listen to them hone their craft and their music is upbeat and lashes out at you one min and the next you are soothed and caressed. if youve never seen them play live, you are missing one of the most creative acts that has come out of this area in quite awhile. do yourself a favor and attend the cd release show and be prepared to enjoy yourself.
