There were a lot of great things that happened for 253 hip-hop last year. We had the emergence of Leezy Soprano, the skills of Havi Blaze, the newness of Gonzo Family and Blue Nose Music and so much more.

One of the breakout artists of 2011 was Abom the Kid. Abom is a solo MC who rides with Gonzo and Blue Nose. He's one of the more lyrically serious MCs of the two crews, and his stage performance is also energetic and intense. If I had to make a formal selection, I'd choose Abom as 2011's "Rookie of the Year." He dropped four mixtapes last year, each one more buzz-worthy than the previous. Abom's last mixtape, which he dropped Dec. 31, 2011, is titled 4 Kornerz, and it represents his most advanced, mature and introspective work to date. The album is available on abomkid.bandcamp.com. It is well worth paying $5 for, considering it comes stacked with 21 tracks and packing guest verses from Cam the Viking, Illizm, Awall A.K.A 2-Piece, Lost Soul the Emo-Kat, Mae Dali, Nuvo The1 and me. Lately, I've been making my rounds throughout the scene and nearly everyone I bump into asks me if I've heard 4 Kornerz. It ended up being one of the biggest local releases of 2011

To catch up on what Northwest and Las Vegas MC Logics is up to, check out his "Broken Glass Freestyle" video on YouTube. It's Logics and some other bubbling underground national artists spitting a cappella verses. Logics has stayed fashionably relevant by dropping at least five well-shot videos within the last month. So go watch "Rain Falls" and "Proud to Be" on YouTube as well, so ya can stay up on one of the few area artists around here that gets some national shine.

We all know Tacoma producer DJ Semaj is dope. Well, it looks like none other than Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan has also taken notice. Semaj produced the track "Luxury Rap," featuring Fred Da Godson, on Raekwon's new mixtape Unexpected Victory. The album is available on datpiff.com.

Thanks to Semaj, Blakmic, Todd Sykes and many others, Tacoma is a great place to get fresh beats!

Next week it's Still Ghetto, Mae Dali and Lok Skywalker.

Abom-Kid is not only the rookie of the year, but also a great example of how an artists should carry his/her self on stage as well as off. I know him as a person,he is definately humble but confident that his music will take him to big places. S/O to him!

Yep, The Koomaniacs via Savi Suazi nominated AbomKid for Hustla of the Year for the 25360 Awards of 2011 as well as voted. He deserves that for real. Rookie of the Year, well The Koomaniacs were nominated for Best New Artist/Group so I had to vote for my own group on that one. Ya smell what I'm saying? Shot out to AR Mastermind too, cuz I'm listening to the rough draft of a song called "Dark" that both of them are featured on and we might perform it at Awall's show on April 6th at Hell's Kitchen. Our scene is starting to build some strength and momentum, and I love bein a part of it!
