It looks like organizers of the annual Olympia Independent Music Festival are really beginning to hit their stride.

This year, creators Jabe Jabberwock and Wylie Van Wenger - along with countless supporters from the community- have turned the volume on this festival to 11. In past years, the event was held in Sylvester Park. Now in its fourth year, it's a full-on block party. A benefit for Capitol Theater, OIMF is open to all ages and totally free. Held on 5th Ave, the street will be blocked off from noon until 9 p.m.

"What we've managed to do in four short years is rally an entire community toward the common goal of celebrating Olympia's art and culture," said Van Wenger. "It never ceases to amaze me how many local businesses and institutions are willing to go out of their way to donate products, services and money to an event such as OIMF."

And what support there is! In addition to the nine indie bands set to play, there will be an outdoor beer garden and food booths as well as craft booths from Tush! Burlesque, Pistols and Petticoats and Farmers Insurance. Jusby the Clown will take pies to the face for donations, Big Sam, Professional Chin Balancer will be there (think kegs and lawnmowers), Oly Express race and muscle cars will be on display. There will also be a daylong raffle with prizes from local businesses such as Rainy Day Records and Psychic Sister, plus a silent art auction in the lobby of Capitol Theater featuring artists such as Sarah Utter, Christopher Ross and Ira Coyne. The shindig will be hosted and M.C.'d by local theatrical legends Elizabeth Lord and Lauren O'Neill.

Whew, no wonder they needed an entire city block - that's a lot of Oly talent in one place!

All money earned directly benefits the historic Capitol Theater.

"Events like OIMF bring the whole community together and showcase all the talents and skills of one of the most genuinely unique cities in the United States," Van Wenger said. "But even more importantly it is a chance to spend a beautiful summer day in the sun listening to great music and having fun, which really, is the whole point of everything we've been working toward as a species since the beginning of time."
