The Rockford Files: Olympia Experimental Music Festival

Olympia will be calculatedly noisy this weekend

Derek M. Johnson plays the acoustic/electric cello in non-traditional and improvisational settings often as a soundtrack to a hand-made, direct animation slide show of his own creation.

You're likely to hear lots of noise coming out of Olympia this weekend. While that might not be news to some, the strange sounds emanating from the city will be calculatedly noisy.

In its 19th year, the Olympia Experimental Music Festival features bands from near and far who favor experimentalism, texture, ambience, improvisation and psychedelia over straight-up rock 'n' roll.  The three-day ordeal will take over all-ages venue Northern in Olympia June 28-30. The festival will feature 18 different acts - many from Olympia, and the rest mostly spanning from Seattle to Portland.

Music begins on Friday at 6 p.m., with each of the 18 bands scheduled for a 40-minute set.

Friday the 28 will bring experimental band Giant Worm to the stage. Emitting sounds that can only be rightfully heard in Olympia or outer space, Giant Worm has been creating "fugitive soundscapes and musical journeys to elsewhere" for more than 30 years.

The schedule for Friday, June 28 is as follows:

  • 6-6:40 p.m.: Noisepoetnobody/Sistutl (Seattle)
  • 7-7:40: The Giant Worm (Portland, Olympia, Eugene)
  • 8-8:40: JD Helwig (Portland)
  • 9-9:40: Tone Dogs (Seattle, Portland)
  • 10-10:40: The WA Trio (Seattle)

Saturday, June 29 brings Denver band Thinking Plague to Olympia. Founded in 1982, the Colorado-based band's unpredictable melodies and instrumentation will be right at home the South Sound.

Other bands that evening will include:

  • 4-4:40 p.m.: Eagles are F'N' Crazy (Olympia)
  • 5-5:40: Soup Purse (Portland)
  • 6-6:40: Dead Air Fresheners (Portland, Olympia, Seattle)
  • 7-7:40: Aural Resucitation Unit (Dubuque, Iowa)
  • 8-8:40: 10,000 Tigers (Thollem McDonas from Palo Alto, Calif.,Arrington de Dionyso from Olympia)
  • 9-9:40: Tempered Steel (Seattle)
  • 10-11: Thinking Plague (Cuneiform recording artists from Denver)

The final evening of the festival will include a performance from Olympia native Derek M. Johnson. The cello-wielding and award-winning experimental musician will surely pack a number of tricks up his sleeve. His performance will allegedly feature music created with Kodak slide projectors, filtered through the extensive array of pedals he will have at his disposal. His "ektagraphtastic" set will undoubtedly be something to write home about.

The schedule for Sunday, June 30 is:

  • 5-5:40 p.m.: Big Tom The Lithuanian (Olympia)
  • 6-6:40: Turtle
  • 7-7:40: Wood Paneling (Mason County, Wash.)
  • 8-8:40: Derek M. Johnson (Olympia Music Award winner!)
  • 9-9:40: WAMU (Seattle)
  • 10-10:40: Knot Pine Box (Olympia)
