Let's face it - whether you are new in town or were stationed here years ago and stayed on when you retired, we're all looking for something new and exciting to do.
And as the weather warms up and the sun beats down upon our faces, it's nearly impossible not to want to do something outdoors.

Narrows Marina, located just south of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (site of the original engineering disaster Galloping Gertie) offers a place to stretch your legs, grab a bite and a brew and, if you're a boater - an array of amenities to keep you happy.

Founded in 1949, the family owned and operated marina has undergone extensive renovations during the past several years and currently offers 215 slips, 237 boat lockers and more than 100,000 square feet of indoor boat storage. During the busy summer months, businesses at the marina - including Boathouse 19 Bar & Grill, Narrows Brewing Company, Narrows Marina Bait & Tackle Store, Aaron's Marine Service and Street Styles Custom Upholstery - employ about 170 people.

Narrows Marina even bested nearly 1,000 other marinas from around the country when it was selected as Marina of the Year by Marina Dock Age Magazine earlier this year.

The accolade was due in part to the facility's extensive renovations as well as its dedication to the environment. In 2009, it received an Enviro Stars rating from Pierce County and was certified as a "clean marina." Furthermore, renovation of gas pumps and tanks - along with an environmentally friendly float dock system - helped it improve water quality.

If you've recently PCSd to Joint Base Lewis-McChord with a boat in tow, Narrows Marina has got you covered in more ways than one.

However, if you don't own a boat or tend toward the mal de mer, the marina still has a lot to offer. For one, Boathouse 19 Bar & Grill. For two, Narrows Brewing Company. Both have over-the-water seating and offer spectacular views.

"You're just looking straight at the bridge or the Cascades," said Wagner. "It's really a beautiful view."

Even better - the west-facing decks allow for hours of sunlight (when it's out, anyway) to fill up on some vitamin D and relax. Stay long enough, and you'll be rewarded with one of the Puget Sound's unrivaled spectacular sunsets.

More of a night crawler than a sun worshiper? Narrows Brewing has you covered there as well. On Wednesdays at 6, come out for the Singer Songwriter Showcase, or test yourself with Mind Tap Trivia on the second and fourth Thursday of the month. Need some nibbles to go along with one of the several delicious craft beers on tap? Narrows Brewing doesn't have a kitchen, but guests are welcome to bring in outside food. Make it easy on yourself and eat at Boathouse 19 (or grab something to go and bring it with you); it's right next door.

Whether you've got some sturdy sea legs or are more of a landlubber, there's something for you at Narrows Marina.
