"I started rapping when I decided I wanted to make a rap album for my cat," Hollywood Kill Krew (HKK) frontman Doc Hollywood tells me. "I didn't know anybody that rapped, so I would just do it by myself for my cat, Mr. Cool."

Although Hollywood says he didn't know anybody who rapped, he did know plenty of musicians - many of whom he'd eventually team up with to form the hilariously stony Olympia rap group, Hollywood Kill Krew. About two years ago Hollywood started approaching friends he'd played music with in the past about starting a rap group - a Beastie Boys-style comedy rap endeavor. As Hollywood tells it, everyone was excited to take on the hip-hop scene and begin a journey toward Oly notoriety.

While the meat of HKK's lineup is lyricists Hollywood, Big Bud Bundy and Kevin Co$tna, the Krew also employs a drummer by the name of Lawless Lucy and a keyboardist who calls himself John Candy.

Last week the notoriously red-eyed Krew invited me into their studio in Olympia to watch some old clips of Piper's Pit (Rowdy Roddy Piper's WWF talk show segment from back in the day) and to find out what the Kill Krew has in store for us in the future.

The Krew informs me right away that everyone in the group has been performing together and has been involved in Olympia's music scene for a long time. Together or separately, they've pretty much dabbled in every genre you can think of. Dabbling in hip-hop, their most recent collective venture, only seems natural.

"We used to have a party rock band called the Cool Guys, and we would sing about beaches, babes and partying. It only lasted a little while, though. It was good summertime music but that was about it," says Hollywood. "We've also had a punk rock band called the Mabies, and most recently another group called the Pasties, which actually did pretty well for three or four years."

Along with drumming her ass off for the HKK, Lawless Lucy also makes an occasional appearance on the mic. When this happens, the Kill Krew uses the unexpected transition to impress the crowd, with Hollywood replacing Lucy on the drums. "I've been drumming half of my life," says Lucy, the only female member of the Krew.

"All of us have been in different style bands, which makes everything turnout really unique, production-wise," says Hollywood.

While Hollywood says he produces all the music, he says each member of the Krew plays different instruments to make up the beats; he simply gathers everything and puts it all together. If you've heard any of HKK's music you know they definitely have a really fun vibe going on. With releases like "Angry Birds" and a remake of Rebecca Black's "Friday" (which is turned completely into a song about smoking weed), HKK produces the kind of hip-hop that will make you laugh your ass off and want to party at the same time.

While keyboardist John Candy has released 22 rap albums - an Olympia record - on his own under the name Mack Dawg (not joking), the Krew is in the process of finishing up it debut album, Smoke Monster, which should hit the mean streets of Oly July 4.
