Whaddaya wanna do this weekend?" "I dunno, whadda you wanna do?"

Ah, the clarion call of the ill-prepared. Memorial Day Weekend stares you in the face with its myriad entertainment and edification options, and you blink in confusion. How many of your valuable hours will you waste pondering where to spend them?

Fortunately, this weekend is perfect for concentrated doses of enchantment in contained areas. That's right, it's time for trumpeter Rich Wetzel's annual Tacoma Jazz & Blues Festival, when you can cram an entire week's worth of fun into one whirlwind Saturday.

Sure, not every jazz festival can be on par with those found in places like New Orleans, Montreux or San Sebastian. However, the 11th annual Tacoma Jazz & Blues Festival is indeed a legitimate jazz festival. Son of Jazz festival presents seven bands on three stages bound to open the ears of those who insist that no worthwhile sounds existed prior to Elvis.

Bobble Tiki initially got into jazz because, frankly, it didn't always make a lot of sense to him. And he liked that. It was a soulful respite from the day-in day-out cacophony of rock 'n' roll. It soothes; it swings; it eludes.  This jazz festival will offer more than Bobble Tiki can eat, but he'll scarf whatever he can.

Saturday, May 25, the Harmon Brewery & Eatery, The Swiss and Stonegate Pizza, between 12:30 and 11:30 p.m., will be going full blast with quartets up to big bands the size of Ruston's population.  The Blues stage at The Harmon kicks off at 12:30 p.m. with Steve Cooley and the Dangerfields, followed by The Cody Rentas Band at 2, Maia Santell and House Blend at 3:30 and headline Arthur Migliazza at 5 p.m. The Johnny Lewis Big Band and Roadside Attraction will command The Swiss from 1-6 p.m. Beginning at 8 p.m. Rich Wetzel's Groovin' Higher Jazz Orchestra with guest trumpeter Mike Vax will perform for three and a half hours at Stonegate Pizza.

The festival is free, thanks to sponsors - although there's a $5 cover at Stonegate.

OK. That monkey who resides on your back, the one who answers to the name Procrastination, has often stood between you and a good time. He prevented you from calling for Sasquatch tickets, and twice snatched the car keys from your hand as you attempted to make your way toward the Paul Reiser show Friday. Don't let him get the better of you this weekend.  This festivals rocks, er, jazzes.
