From the "10% off military discount" sign prominently displayed on its front door to its participation in a range of military organizations and events, it is clear that Famous Dave's supports the troops.

The eatery - which has local locations in Tacoma, Tukwila, Puyallup, Silverdale and Everett as well as in 39 states around the country - works with the military almost daily, said Jim Perkins, regional catering sales and marketing manager.

The company not only donates meals for deployment and welcome home ceremonies for Joint Base Lewis-McChord troops, but also frequently caters hails and farewells, retirement parties and going-away events, Perkins said. In addition, Famous Dave's is part of the Association of the United States Army, Air Force Association and Lakewood and Silverdale Chambers of Commerce Military Affairs Committees.

"Famous Dave's is culturally a good fit," said Dave Braden, general manager of the Tacoma location. "Many (Servicemembers) are not from Washington. They're from the south (and) a lot of folks familiarize it with home. It's like having friends and family over for a barbeque."

Last year, the company fed more than 2,500 people at the Stryker Brigade Memorial dedication in Puyallup, and on Veteran's Day each year, it offers select menu items for free for members of the military.

"They love our barbeque," Braden said, noting that on most Thursdays and Fridays, the Tacoma branch is packed with Servicemembers getting their fill of ribs, chopped pork sandwiches, catfish and more (lunch specials are served from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.). "They know we support the military and they reciprocate by eating here."

Famous Dave's owner John Prince "likes to give back," Perkins said, "to support and thank (Servicemembers) for fighting for our country."
