Open for about a year, Ikonos - Real Greek Souvlaki offers an alternative to American fast food burger fare. At the casual Greek dining spot in Gig Harbor, you won't find belly dancers, beer or candlelight. You will find inexpensive, tasty food in a non-fussy, family-friendly environment. The menu runs the gamut of typical Greek food found in America. Vegetarians and meat-lovers alike will almost surely find something to their liking, be it falafel and vegetables in pita bread to beef and lamb-filled gyros, chicken, beef or lamb souvlaki and grilled spiced chicken with seasoned rice entrees.
Lighter items like Greek salad, avgolemono soup and appetizer-size spanakopita (spinach and feta in buttery, baked filo dough) and dolmathes (grapes leaves stuffed with seasoned rice) are also offered. Another bright spot, roasted red pepper and salty feta cheese are whipped together with olive oil for a tasty dip served with pita bread - in addition to hummus and tzatziki (savory yogurt sauce with cucumber, spices and garlic).
Non-Greek items offered at Ikonos include French fries, Caesar salad and a Philly gyro - served in a pita and complete with sautéed green bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and melted provolone cheese. Don't forget the baklava.
Pricing tops out at $10.95 for a full gyro dinner, including rice or fries and salad. Median menu price is $5.95.
