Mono in VCF has new female singer

Mono in VCF bassist Jodan Luckman sent the Weekly Volcano a note saying the band has a new female singer, new keyboardist and demos off the upcoming album here.
On first listen, new singer Dana reminds me of the languorous, melancholic singer Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star, and new songs "Cinch Ring" and "Spider Rotation" spew gorgeous autumnal melodies and brooding ballads.  Check it here. â€" Brad Allen

Faster Pussycat

Glam-sleaze vets Faster Pussycat are playing the next best things to the Sunset Strip â€" The Factory on South Tacoma Way Saturday night!  Taime Downe and the boys (now original guitarist Brett Muscat and assorted members of Downe’s Newlydeads) haven’t released a proper album since 1992’s Whipped,(Between the Valley of the Ultra Pussy (2001) is a remix CD) but who’s keeping track? There’s plenty of mileage still left in nuggets like “Where There’s a Whip There’s a Way,” if not obligatory power ballad “House of Pain.” Hell, it’s amazing these Pussies are still alive. With Atomic Outlaws, River City Rebels and Psycho 78. 8 p.m., The Factory, 56th and South Tacoma, Way, Tacoma. â€" Bobble Tiki

Shake it at Syren

Ever get the feeling you’re living in a time warp?  Between insincere campaign ads and the perpetual “back to school” mating calls of you thrifty-minded soccer moms, it seems like summer’s going all too soon.  If you don’t have time to run frantically into the woods this weekend and leave the city folk behind, going to the other extreme is probably your best bet.  Yes the Tacoma Fire Department shut down the Syren's deck claiming it's unsafe.  However, it's still burning up inside.  Syren Lounge and Nightclub offers its usual worthy DJ sets the next three nights.  Tonight, DJ Reign spins hip-hop under the title "Steeze."  Saturday, Sept. 2, DJ Feisty hosts "Sins."  And Sunday, "Pride" celebrates all genders with DJ Rekles.  They all kick off around 9 p.m.  Syren Lounge and Nightclub, 1117 Tacoma Ave. S., downtown Tacoma, (253) 383-7135. â€" Suzy Stump

Gig Harbor Folk Festival

Folk lovers, it’s time to cross the bridge for a weekend of Northwest folk music as Gig Harbor sets the stage for its annual Folk Festival.  This grassroots effort has gathered enough steam to bring big-name folk artists to the South Sound.  This is the year to not to miss as artists such as Stephen Bishop, Christine Lavin, Danny O’Keefe, Bill Morrissey, and Tony Furtado plan to entertain.  The concert is free (nice), and it takes place at Skansie Park with the gorgeous harbor as the backdrop.  Sept. 2-3, 10 a.m.-8 p.m., free, Skansie Brothers Park, Rosedale and Harborview Dr., Gig Harbor. â€" Michael Swan

Bobble Tiki got hot at Bumbershoot

Bumber1a Bumber2a Bumber3a Bumber4a Bumber5a "Harrah! Seattle's Bumbershoot is here! Harrah!" Does this sound like you? Do you consider hot weather and no clouds a "nice day?" Do you salivate at the thought of lying out on the Mural Amphitheater lawn under the blazing sun while the sponsorship swag reflects radiant shimmers? How about saunas? You like those? Heat lamps? Flannel sheets? I bet you wear socks to bed too, right? When you go to beach parties, do you just jump into the fire and roll around in the searing coals? Is that what you like? Is that what makes you happy, you masochistic weirdo?

Whoa, sorry, Bobble Tiki didn't mean that. It's just that he gets a little ornery at Bumbershoot. All this heat. It makes Bobble Tiki go a little crazy. Know what else it makes him do? Sweat like a pro wrestler, that's what. But then, there's the rub. You see, Bobble Tiki is not a very big guy. He's just your average tiki, 1'2", 20-pound glistening freak who can't keep his glands shut. Oh, and for the record, Bobble Tiki's taken. Sorry, folks.

OK, a bit of music now.

Pictured above is this little tyke cranking out serious Mozart for folks entering the Mercer Street entrance.  Dude cranks serious classical.

Next, caught Po'okela Street Band's Jawaiian rhythm on the Bumbrella Stage.  As you can see people must dance to them.  The bassist slapped the crap out of his bass sending a deep thump to Bobble Tiki's heart.

Snapped a shot of the poor people sweatin' in the long line to grab Mainstage passes.
Right now If in the Backyard Stage's beer garden seeking refuge under an umbrella and tippin' the first Pilsner of the day.  Portland's popriffic Derby entertains.  Harmony driven.  The stage provides shade for the band so their ties are bearable.

OK, see ya later. â€" Bobble Tiki

Bumbershoot, Blondie and Bobble

Gawd, milk was a poor choice.  The sun destroyed Bobble Tiki today.

Ever since Bobble Tiki was a tiny tiki, his raging internal furnace has humbled him with the constant threat of inappropriate perspiration. In school, regardless of the season, Bobble Tiki would spring the halls after gym or recess with all the composure of a malaria victim. He'd sit at his desk red-faced and shiny, trying to "think cold" or "think dry." Then he'd give up and just sit there helplessly leaking, the back of his shirt becoming a Rorschach of humiliation. Bobble Tiki is sure he can blame at least some of his adult neurosis on the trauma of being born a piece of wood.

Bobble Tiki just lost four pounds typing that last paragraph.

Bobble Tiki jumped into the photographer pit to shoot Blondie's Bumbershoot performance on the Mainstage.  Yes, he was a chosen one. Only 12 photographers were allowed beneath Ms. Harry.  Mr. Bumbershoot Photographer Pit Control Guy had to pick 12 from 20 desperate snapper saps lined outside the gate.  It was so "Project Runway" whatever.  If it wasn't for Bobble Tiki screaming "Bobble Tiki's from Tacoma" he would have shot Blondie's set 50 feet from the stage with the photographers from Walla Walla and Kitsap County.

Bumber1b Bumber2b Bumber3b Bumber4b Bumber5b Blondie was Bobble Tiki's highlight of the afternoon. Deborah Harry at 60-something still rocks. Dressed in bright-green top and pants, Harry opened with "Call Me," danced in her band's lengthy musical interludes, led a crowd sing-along to "The Tide is High," dedicated "Good Boys" to all the good boys, discussed fishing from Seattle's Edgewater hotel in year's past and worked the stage for the rap parts of "Rapture." â€" Bobble Tiki

Bumberbout blows Bobble Tiki away

Bumber1c Bumber2c Bumber3c Seeking refuge from the heat, Bobble Tiki stepped inside KeyArena to catch Bumberbout â€" women's flat-track roller derby competition. Seattle's Rat City Rollergirls destroyed the team from North Carolina.
This sport involves â€" roughly â€" a race between two teams on roller skates, during which a player scores points by overtaking opposing players after skating completely around the track within a certain time limit. Despite its roots in Depression-era entertainment, the derby has undergone several cycles, including an upswing in the '70s, and now has grown to more than 30 U.S. Rollergirl Association leagues.
Watching big, strong, athletic women on wheels knocking into each other is Bobble Tiki's new drug. â€" Bobble Tiki

Gig Harbor Folk Festival

Gigharborfolk1 Gigharborfolk2 I think Gig Harbor is the perfect place to be this weekend, with quaint restaurants, eclectic shops, and more music than you could shake a banjo at.
A slight breeze worked like magic air conditioning for the seated crowd listening to the music acts as they came onto the stage, and a live broadcast of the music piped the sounds into the shops and restaurants, meaning that you never left the action even if you needed to eat, or felt compelled to shop.
While I looked longingly toward the Tides Tavern, family presence meant that was not to be.  But I guess beerlessness is a small price to pay for quality time spent with the family on a beautiful day in a beautiful location, listening to live, free music.
The Gig Harbor Folk Festival continues today, with music starting at 11 a.m., going til 8 p.m.  Be smart, and park at one of  the shuttle Gig Harbor Park n' Ride at the City center off ramp and at City administration building. Transpro Shuttles will run between these parking areas and the festival site from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Sunday's acts: Daniel Makins, 11 a.m., Jan Krist, noon, Andrew Calhoun 1 p.m., Wendy Waldman, 2 p.m., Buddy Mondlock, 3p.m., James Keelaghan, 4 p.m., Lynn Myles 5 p.m., Tony Furtado, 6 p.m., and Christine Lavin, 7:15 p.m. â€" Jessica Corey-Butler

Ellensburg Rodeo report

Natasha_32 This is Natasha, reporting in live from the Ellensburg Rodeo.  As most all of you know (because I talk about it WAY too much), Ellensburg is my home, mi casa, the place I went to college.

At one point here, I was dating a local, my roommate was a local, and I was the assistant editor of the local paper.

One of my newbie rodeo peeps turned to me and said, "Dude?!  Do you know EVERYONE here?"  I smirked and said, "Yep."

My weekend started on Thursday.  I rolled into town, straight up to the only bar in the world that will ever really matter to me, The Tav.  My homie Jewels (he once got hit with a softball in the family jewels and he's had that name ever since) let me know that my other boys were playing in the city league softball championship.  I scarfed down my cheeseburger and headed to the field.

Naturally, my boys won, and we went back to the Tav to celebrate.  At one point, the beautiful Smet was leaving with some girl he met just that day, and the boys yelled out (rightfully so): Siphilis is a battle! and Chlimidia is not a flower.

The truth hurts, literally.

Friday led to even more fun.  The Tav turned into a turnstyle, let alone the fact that the juke box was accidentally playing three songs for every quarter (my dream come true).  A steady flow of old college friends, my near and dear locals, and the usual supects showed up.  Amonst several others, I found an old acquaintance, Pete.  I apologized for the fact that his wife felt threatened by me a couple of years ago, and noted that I am absolutely harmless.

His response set the tone for the entire weekend: "Don't talk like that, I've always loved the fact that you're a little bit dangerous."

After some moonlighting at the Horseshoe, some grinding on the dance floor, and avoiding a few old flames, I knew I was free.

A certain bet was set during the course of the night: I decided that this would be one of the first years amongst many that there would be absolutely no Rodeo Romance for me.  I've got $10 riding on it.  Money in the bag.

Today I arose after four small hours of sleep.  I had finished the night/morning after singing Elton John, U2 and Alice in Chains hits with my Jewels and Janetty till 4 a.m.  Woah.

I woke up to a sudden rush of the expected: Saturday here is the best part of the weekend.

My BFF Joy and I got ready in a fury and went straight to the Frontier Tavern at 11 a.m.  As always, we missed the parade, but the best part is the fact that the Clan Gordon Bagpipers exit the parade and go straight to the Frontier to play there, and the place gets PACKED.

All of the people I've ever known in this city were there, drinking big beers in the early afternoon.  People get so trashed that last year my friend walked out spewing foam, and others tend to shed a tear during the bagpipe performance, especially when they bust Amazing Grace out.

This year ushered in a new phase: A couple of my college colleagues decided to purchese 100 goldfish at the pet store across the street and pour them into the foutain in the Frontier beer garden.  At several points in the chaos, at least six people ate live goldfish.  It was a disgusting initiation of sorts, but I couldn't stop laughing.  I was in now way one of them, but I couldn't help but yell, "Omega 3, all for thee!"

Most of the crowd hopped next door to the Tav after the bagpipers moved there for sustinance other than golfish.  That led to awesome food, additional beers, and now, a nap.

More adventures will follow since I'm staying here until Tuesday.  Updates will appear whenever the stupor arises.

I'd rather be a cowgirl. â€" Natasha

Bumbershoot Sunday

Few things test the limits of human endurance quite like Seattle's Bumbershoot music and arts festival. What follows is one humble tiki's thoroughly dishonest attempt at capturing some of the most memorable moments from one of the biggest music festivals in the nation. The facts are questionable, but the names remain unchanged in order to implicate the innocent. Or is that the guilty?

Bumber1d Bumber2d Bumber3d Bumber4d 12:15 p.m.: Bobble Tiki's first beer of the day, this time without a table.  Bumbershoot yanked the white plastic tables out of the Backyard Stage beer garden.  Hence, Bobble Tiki acquires his first grass stains of the day.  Before a larger Backyard Stage crowd than yesterday's opening band slot Mon Frere treats the crowd to dirty electro pop.  Bobble Tiki wonders if guitarist Kyle Swisher and drummer David Haasl ever get startled by singer Nouela Johnston's fiery vocals. â€" Bobble Tiki
