5 Things To Do: Friday

MICHAEL SWAN: FRIDAY, MAY 1, 2009 >>>

Frost-Park 1. The Frost Park Chalk Challenge rules are simple: competitors pick a spot in the pavement at Ninth and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma and compose a piece of art with chalk. They have from noon to 1 p.m. to complete the work, and then photos â€" masses of them â€" are taken and posted to feedtacoma.com to be voted on. At the end of the day (midnight!) all votes are tallied, and the winner is declared.

2. Ed Hoffman’s Burning Man photos at Art House Design are burning hot images of the freewheeling annual celebration of art in the burning sands of Nevada's Black Rock Desert.

3. Tacoma Musical Playhouse presents The Producers, the story of a down-on-his luck Broadway producer, Max Bialystock, and his mild-mannered accountant, Leo Bloom, who figure out that they can make a boatload of money if they stage a flop.

4. The Royal Bear’s catchy lyrics and ’80s style beats are intended to break up the sometimes dormant crowds and get people moving. With influences like Joy Division and AC/DC, The Royal Bear is sure to please even the toughest ears tonight at The New Frontier Lounge.

5. Hornet Leg’s dreamy vocals through an echo pedal running from a four track playing drum loops will calm your paranoia tonight at Le Voyeur in Olympia.

Hornet Leg

OWEN TAYLOR: HAVE I TOLD YOU LATELY HOW MUCH I RESPECT CHRIS SUTTON? >>>

Hornet Leg I first saw Chris Sutton play a Hornet Leg show in Olympia’s premier tiny venue, aptly named “The World’s Smallest Venue” â€" which was a crawlspace at “Funtabulon.” I decided to take a crash course in overcoming claustrophobia by lying on my stomach, shimmying sideways and cramming myself into the wedge between the floor and ceiling. Steeping in the penetrating dankness that is Olympia coupled with the utter disdain for deodorant that’s rampant in this town, I was about a Chuck Woolery two-and-two away from freaking out. It was Sutton’s dreamy vocals through an echo pedal running from a four track playing drum loops that calmed my near paranoia. I closed my eyes and let the dubbed-out soul of Olympia’s finest session player help me overcome a useless fear. Tonight, Le Voyeur invites you to do the same when Sutton returns to debut the new Hornet Leg sound with recent additions Bob Desaulniers and Robert Comitz.

Tacoma's new Poet Laureate

MICHAEL SWAN: CONGRATS ANTONIO EDWARDS JR. >>>

Antonio-Edwards-jr. In this week's issue, Weekly Volcano scribe Mark Thomas Deming included Antonio Edwards Jr.'s "Hilltopia" poem in his piece on In Tahoma's Shadow — the poetry anthology that features the work of 75 local poets. Deming wrote that Edward Jr.'s work was the standout poem of the collection. His "Hilltopia" pays tribute to the historic, embattled Hilltop neighborhood and raises questions about gentrification.

Last night at a poetry event at the University of Puget Sound, the Urban Grace 2009 Tacoma Poet Laureate was announced — Antonio Edwards, Jr.

Edwards Jr. is a regular performer on the Tacoma poetry scene, known for his personal, powerful, and entertaining poetry. He uses his unique style to address local issues and matters of faith. The Speak Your Soul organization named Edwards Jr. the 2009-10 Soul of the City Tacoma Poet Laureate.

From "Hilltopia":

HILLTOPIA,
this is where God lives.
This is where Jesus, John, Luke, Paul and Matthew is.
This is where our babies were born.
This is where you come back to when your life is torn.
This is where our homies died.
This is where Mommas and Nannas cried.
This is where our loyalty lies.

This is Tacoma.

Palace Korean Restaurant

STEPH DEROSA: SLOW BURN >>>

Slow-Burn-Palace Ra Bok Ki
Palace Korean Restaurant
Price: $7.95
Burn Factor: one out of four Molotov cocktail
Slow-Burn-One-rating

Lunchtime decisions in Lakewood's Korean Town are like a playing a game of Boggle with a dyslexic. You kind of have to guess what you're going to get. As I pass signs for businesses advertising "Day Care and Pianos," housed all in one store, I rely on my luck to hit something warm and tasty. Within the same parking lot as one of my favorite sushi places, Kyoto Japanese Restaurant lies Palace Korean Restaurant – one of the best places in Lakewood to find true Korean BBQ. The real kind, where you have your own personal grill in the center of the table and all.

For lunch, I kept it simple. Not recognizing any of the dishes on their lunchtime menu, I asked the barely English-speaking server what spicy dish she recommended. "Ra Bok Ki. It has pan fried rice cake in spicy sauce with Ramen noodle," she informed me. It sounded harmless, so Ra Bok Ki it was.

Within this humungous plate of Korean spicy sauce swam thin, floppy pan-fried rice cakes and large tubes of what I can only assume was something of the pasta variety. Beneath the large "pasta" tubes hid a nest of Ramen noodles cradling one lonesome hard-boiled egg. The "spicy" sauce was far from anything that would burn my mouth. No peppery fire, no blazing chilies. To me it was a red sauce with cultural flavors, and that was that. I tried to ask the server what the red sauce was made of, but a language barrier prevented me from gathering any information.

As random as this dish was, it was everything I expected out of lunchtime in Korean Town: Traditional, un-Americanized Korean food. Next time, 'I'm playing with the grills.
